For 2014, I think CMON should run some kind of contest where all participants paint the same
figure and all who score above 8.0 or 8.5 are featured in the Annual in its own chapter.
Anybody else like this idea ? Just don't make it a GW figure.......
as an extra chapter: yeah why not?
but I fear it'll never really work because:
- figure selection: you don't want a GW figure, XY doesn't want another one, YZ another-another one, etc. (to be honest: CMON book --> CMON mini would be here the best)
- favoritism, gamers and friends: it exists. Some painter can give in any basic paintjob it'll be rated high / ask a lot of people, who normally play but don't really paint (even better if friends) and watch the score go high as compared to their expectations you do a superb work. (no real solution to this one)
- previous points given: most people feel strange if they have to give a score that's +-1 different, then current one, so after the first 5-10 votes it'll either stay high or low.
- not enough votes/mini... lately it's a problem. World's larges site for painted minis and such, and it takes 3-4 weeks to get 50 votes together (less if 'asking' for votes on gamer forums), and with about 50 votes the voter's personal preferences in style don't really average out.
- own experience: I tried it three times so far
-- once it was a competition, almost no participants because of figure ( "do I really have to buy it?")
-- Painted Figure Exchange (similar to the FE here, but with painted minis), another unsuccessful try. Again not enough interest, because there is no 1 figure, that everyone likes ("do I really have to buy it" again, and "The figure I get won't fit into my army anyway")
-- Online (interactiveÜ, well as much as I could) tutorial for figure painting, with 1 defined figure to learn the lesson / month. Guess what, first question: " can I use XY instead? I don't want to buy that figure, because I won't use it afterwards".
