David's Warhammer 40k Table and other WIP's

Hi, Now that Golden Demon & Games Day Chicago 2012 has passed us by
(Great showing this year, congrats to Mightychad and Khavor on their demon's as well as anyone else on this forum who received one)
I was happy that my Sanguinor Diorama made first cut, (In what I think was a great quality category this year)
I have pictures up, but better pics need to be taken.

Now that competitions are done for this year, I actually decided to start playing Warhammer 40k!
First, I decided I wanted my own table to play on, So I have started on that, I will have pictures up soon.

One thing that comes to mind is the table I am building, I want it to have some action and movement to it,
I don't mean actual movement, but some dynamics in the table. So I have started with some ideas of my own:

1. have some non-playable models around, maybe casualties and whatnot

2. Electronics (One idea I had was to use a arduino programming board to light up some street lights
and have one of them blinking to look like it's about to go out.) I have basically already finished this idea
and tried it out, works pretty well.

The problem comes in, I still feel the board is too static, and maybe some more electronic based ideas
would help that, which is where you guys come in and help me out.

3. Terrain, I am pretty much settled on this, but am open to ideas to help the table out.

After this I have to get back to work on my new diorama (pictures will also be included in this thread), and then hopefully
I can start painting my army! Hopefully....

I have learned so much from this forum, can't express enough thanks for any and every help/advice I get.

Pics to come very soon folks!

Are you planning on doing all of that stuff on removable bases? I couldn't tell what your intention was from what you wrote. But if it's attached permanently to the table, eventually you'll probably wish you could move it or remove it. Be it a light post, building, casualty, hill, tree, what ever floats your boat. The tables that only have a few hills or ridges or bodies of water on them, with the rest of the stuff all on removable bases, give far more options and tend to keep the owners happier for much longer.

I'd like to see more variety, more realistic locations. %99.99 of the boards you see are just middle of nowhere open land OR cities that are all blown apart. There's never any intact cities, farms with crops/live stock/machinery (at least not in 40k, lots of that stuff in FoW and historical games and stuff). I guess it should just seem like there is something worth fighting over. Lights in buildings, stop lights at road crossings, signs/billboards...maybe a programmable construction/traffic sign, those like dot matrix things, where the dots light up and spell words, "detour right ->" or "construction ahead", etc. I'm having a blonde moment and can't think of what they're called. You could program it to take a jab at whatever army you're facing that game. Building signs can do that too, business or government buildings with signs that refuse to serve Orks or Eldar, warn about security death traps for greenskins or pointy ears. You can make the signs removable and double sided, switch them out as required. Could also do the same sort of thing for road signs, something like a city limits "no aliens beyond this point on punishment of death" or "alien restricted zone" thing.

But you'll get the most enjoyment out of whatever you think is cool, so, ya know, have at it.

Pictures as promised...

Oh, I almost forgot! The Diorama that is in the pictures is not the final diorama, it is still missing a bunch of tyranid gargoyles and a tyranid swarm that I still need to get from Forge World.

Thanks.

Looking good so far. Look forward to seeing the next steps :)
Just wondering how you done the slime/blood effect from the nid head? Looks pretty pimp and wouldnt mind trying something similar for orks.

Thanks! The slime/blood effect is very simple actually, it's just some 5 min quick dry clear epoxy with a drop of color of your liking.
As for application, I actually just globbed a little on the mini when the epoxy was still fresh, and then waited about a minute or until
the epoxy was a little stretchy and started pulling little strands out of the glob with a old detail brush I had laying around.

And if you are going to try this, be careful with where your working as epoxy is almost permanent when fully dry, and can be messy!

Thanks, and let me know if you have any other questions
