I\'m sure the effects would be far reaching, but if the Earth\'s poles did suddenly switch, what would actually happen? Seriously, what would happen?
Earthquakes as huge masses of rock try to realign themselves according to the prevailing magnetic fields?
The Ionosphere collapses as charged particles scrabble to make way to the opposite side of the Earth, dropping our shield from the Sun\'s death rays?
Compasses suddenly point the other way?

Mmm..

There was a 20/20 Episode that detailed the top 7 ways in which the earth will be destroyed. There was a supernova, a blackhole, computers becoming too smart and killing us off, the eruption of a supervolcano (there are approx. 40 in the world), a plague, global warming, and the ever-looming threat of asteroids.

In 2011, the chance of a monster solar storm is far higher and we could be faced with loss of electricity for months, and maybe even years. Solar flashes/storms are actually quite common, and the radiation is what causes the north and southern lights!

In 2028, Apothos (asteroid) has a chance of hitting earth. It is likely to miss and has a higher chance of returning in 2036 and killing us all. :D

**Disclaimer: Some of the above dates and numbers may be slightly off, feel free to correct me.

Hopefully nothing. It was the subject of a previous thread a few days ago. Thought I\'d be witty and circularly referential (made that phrase up myself and yes, you are free to use it.) lol

As a few folks have mentioned in one way or another, it depends on the source of info. Some interpretations of the Mayan calender come out different. Most archaeologists agree that it will be 2012, but there are groups (shrinking ones as more folks jump on the popular bandwagon) that say it may be 2011 or 2013. Not a big difference, I know, but shows that not even the experts can agree.

Also as a couple of folks have pointed out, the end of the Mayan calendar is not the end of the world. It\'s the end of a cycle, age, era, etc. that every source I\'ve seen (only about 3) that mention a length agree is approx. 5000 years long. Like the millennium, there\'s another one starts immediately after it.

As dubious as a source as it may be, I like how they describe it in the RPG Shadowrun best. : ) End of the 5th world and the start of the 6th. Bringing back magic and fantasy races along side the tech. Orcs with assault rifles and dragons fighting attack choppers. : ) Too bad the minis were mostly mediocre. Though the museum scale troll is all good.

Homo Erectus survived and we\'re descendants of them - we\'ll prolly survive as well - civilization as we know it may not survive, but life will go on until the sun swells and eats the planet in about 10 million years.

Don\'t think we will be on earth in 10 million years.
We could have finally killed ourselves at that date or we already left the planet to hang out at mars (or even further).

I live in Australia where am I supposed to get guns and ammo when the world goes all Post-apocalyptic. I Suppose I should start learning too use a bow to defend myself from gangs of mutants lol.

Actually, it would be about 4-5 billion years from now, not 10 million. :)

Though that is an urban legend as well. Damn you snopes.com!! My childhood beliefs are all but ruined now! All good stories are myths...

Oh aye, we\'ll survive. People already live with no contact with technology, and I\'ve watched an episode or two of Survivor, so I\'ll be ok.. :D In 10 million years though, Homo diabolicus will be probing glaciers, trying to figure out how Homo sapiens could possibly be their ancestor.

Thing is: one could expect that some of our technology won\'t survive, but what? Does anyone have any idea of what effects a pole reversal would have? Weather patterns and Earth losing its protection against the Sun\'s particular radiation? Those are the two big things I can think of.

Maybe a reversal of the poles would see humans inventing things that work, like milk cartons that don\'t explode over the wrist when force is used on them.

Anyway, I thought the reversals happened approximately every five million of our Earth years?

Hmmm, interesting topic here and i have a few takes on this.

I\'m worried it only gives me around four years to actually paint a mini. also being a young \'un it means i wont have fully lived :(

Though on another note it would be cool, post apocalyptic sounds cool, big bands of mutants and freaks to wage war against, sounds fun.

it\'s always fun seeing the predictions people make..generally tied to a sate with \"strange\" numbers...

we\'ve come through 06/06/06 unscathed 2000 was a big panic over nothing...I like seeing specific dates and times being placed on Geographical events..Man that is some clever calculating...I mean nature has it\'s own rythm and geographical timelines are looked at in millions of years...timing an event like a pole reversal to one day is like me being able to tell you the precise nano second the next aborigine wandering round the outback will fart...

at least if the end does come on that day it will sae a whole heap of shopping..

Oh, and I love the black hole/sun alignment thing... that sounds great, gotta get a black hole in there somewhere.

The Earth suddenly stopping and spinning the other way?! Love it :) Hell, we all know it\'s only Superman flying really fast that can make that happen.

Actually, a lot of the science types I have been reading on this feel that the power grids, communications grids, and anything that depends on the stability of the earth\'s magnetosphere will be shot to hell - basically most of western civilization as we know it right now.
