Demihuman's DemiWIP

Thanks all!

BFoK, the red spigot handle is a wheel from a 1/72 scale tank model. I think a WWII German Tiger tank. Never throw anything away!

Bailey, thanks for the suggestion! It's just a bad pic though. Both reds are Violet red shaded with the (outstanding) Burgundy Wine and highlighted with Magma Red, and then some more shading with the blue-brown-black that everything else is shaded with. The banner may be a tiny bit brighter. I got to get out the big camera set-up.

Which brand are those, Demi? I used BF's advice for mine, leaning on Glazed Over's recipe using only GW colors (didn't have many non-GW reds anyhow).

Oistene, I mostly use Reaper Master Series paints. Not really because I have any broad experience with other paints, but because it was what they had at the hobby store when I first started out. I have grown to be very fond of them. It is also a happy coincidence that Bailey uses a lot of Reaper paints and writes down his terrific recipes :)

I think they are definitely worth checking out. They come in blister packs of 3, a base, a shade and a highlight. The Violet Red, Burgundy Wine and Pale Violet for example is a great one. Super rich deep red. Great for 40k cloaks or Napoleonic Pants: http://www.coolminiornot.com/376942 You can also order them singly from Reaper.

DH uses Reaper Master paints. I like the look of them. IMO, GW makes very fine reds. I am actually not really a fan of many of the Reds from VMC. It's not really a consistency thing or anything, I just don't feel that the range itself supports very good gradients. Same with P3. Although a must have paint is VMC Red Black (or black red) for some Euro style gritty painting and morbidly desaturated hues.

Edit: DH's comment above wasn't here when I started writing this.

Ah yes, I use GW and Vallejo for the same reason - available locally. I'm always on the look-out for single colors that are particularly good and/or useful, though. Got some Reaper paints for free when I ordered some things from them, I liked them a lot. The Nightmare Black I got is particularly useful. I'll take a look at those blisters, could be handy.

I like the color of the GW red that I have but it really bleeds and makes a mess. Don't have that problem with the Reaper. Love my Vallejo pots, but I think because they are weird colors form the German Tank set or something. German Yellow has been my go to for the pale gold I have been doing.

Here is a tester photo! I really like how the banner got placed. Have some time lined up tomorrow to get the good photos... Also contemplating adding some tentacles coming out of the big burst pipe.

I agree the banner placement came out really well. So what kind of tentacle you thinking? Maybe if your feeling daring you could get an led in the pipe to give some atmosphere lighting, just a thought, but not sure how that would look with your vision of this piece.

Banner works perfectly and the base looks like you've pulled it from the scrap heap.
im not 100% on the tentacle idea but that one is down to you. I wonder if it will detract from the banner ?

I love it - the only think I don't like is how the round base on the bottom is placed at the side. Makes is seem unbalanced somehow, as it is about to tip. Could be the picture though.

If you do tentacles, keep it to a few and shoot for a grey color that ties in with the background of the banner. I could also see some cobwebs in the undrperground area to add interest.

I see you made it to Kublacon this past weekend and got 3rd overall. Congrats! How was the competition? What did you think of the other winners?
