Schwing!

Nice colour transititions I love the blue and purple its looking very nice, and matching your stary night, I think you could probably push some darker parts maybe on the inside of the elbows (if thats what they are called) and Wing pits hehe.

Thanks Canny! Wing Pit? Is that like a BBQ chicken wing chain? lol

Oh yeah, we are going to go much darker. I just want to transition through al lot of shades to build up the gradient of my shadows and pick out the very nicely sculpted texture on the wings. It also lets me explore the colors as I go. I did place the big shadows. I struggle with that so it was a good step for me. The shadows on the front of the wing will go almost to black. I don't know where to go with the highlights on the front of the wing. I am liking the Amethyst but I feel like it is maybe too pastel and it sort of clashes with the belly. I guess I might try to put in some earthy orange shadows on the belly and if those look good maybe we will add some of that Golden Highlight/White to the wing highlights and edges. I will probably play with it in photo shop (the GIMP) first.

Got some more darker colors on the dragon. I am losing that subtle Amethyst Purple but that is OK. Just doing the big parts of the wings. It's hard to paint something so big. I am used to cupping the mini in my hand and this thing WAY is too big to do that. I need a little turn table.

I am going to take a break on the dragon for a bit though because I got the Enigma Old Death for the Australia fund raiser! I got him assembled and primed. I am having some issues with the 2 part epoxy I am using so I had to redo a couple of joints. Talk about a nice cast! The detail and fineness of texture on this thing is blowing me away! Unfortunately I think he is too big for the base i made for him. Not that big of a deal I can make a new base.

Appropriately enough while I was waiting for his greenstuff to cure a spider came by and put a little web on him. I noticed after I primed him. Here he is with his Z priming:

Love what you're doing with both of these--the layer after layer of shading on the dragon's wings blows me away. And I can't wait to see what you do with that gorgeous Death figure. Thanks for the step-by-step walk through; for a novice like me it's almost like getting private painting lessons!

Wow what a compliment! Thanks fellow Californian! I am a long time RPG'er but have yet to actually play a war game, let me know if you ever have an opening in San Jose!

Oh, I hadn't even noticed you were a local! I'm more of a RPGer myself actually. Mostly just running a game for my boys and a few of their friends, playing some of the old WizKids Pirates game and starting to learn about mini painting a bit. It's a real stretch for me, I've never had much of a touch artistically. But your work and the others here are a real inspiration--I'm just drinking it all up!

Moving to the darker tones will really put the lights up with out touching them, looking forward to an update! Wow so many things that look awesome to paint, that death model is uber, I will have to choose a winged mini from Wing pit miniatures . .

I was able to spend a quiet hour with Death and got a few first washes onto him.

I went back prior to everything and added a little more white primer to the wings so i could do the dark wash into all the cracks.

Reaper Yellowed Bone for the cloth, Rainy grey for the metals. A very light wash of Breonne Blue for that nice blue you see along the top of the scythe. And then Breonne blue with black mixed in and washed over the wings. A teeny bit of orange and smoke to get some rust compliment to the blue.

Not the color palette I was expecting! Good start and thanks for the surprise.

Well... my work light is very yellow. I have been meaning to replace it. I painted one of my bad moon orks completely white once. I actually went a wash to far and came back with airbrush again. So who knows where I will end up!

Not the best photo. Reworked the shadows and toned down the yellow browns a bit. Also got some progress on the Scythe that I am very happy with. Still need to do dark darks and white ultra highlights on the blade it's coming along nicely. I also need to darken up the shadows a bit and tackle those wings.

That blade is very nice. Have you figured out the base yet?

Zab! Your posts are keeping me super motivated! Thanks!

Since you ask, yes, I got serious on the new base. I was kind of thinking western theme at first. Like, a dead body with a cheater sign and a bunch of paper playing cards printed out to scale laying around a shallow grave (Please, anybody feel free to steal this idea, by the time I get around to it I won't remember anyways) but 1. This figure looks distinctly European to me. and 2. Time is an issue. So, I am going to put him on some snowy ruins on one of those fancy slanty cut-away plinths B) There will be a a tiny subject for him to be reaping but nothing as exciting as a corpse. I wonder if you can guess what it will be by the place holder?

Still needs some more dirt but you get the idea. I also got some more work on the old guy himself:

These pictures aren't that great. The sculpting on the wings is VERY sharp so a lot of what you are seeing is just shadows from the lights and not from my painting. Also the weird/awesome armor scraps he has strapped to his body are rusty orange/brown not just whatever color that is. :/

What about you? Do we get to see your painted whore next to her skull yet???

I hope it's a flower because i have no other idea what it would be. Also, old death is looking pretty damn cool. I just mounted her- you know what? That doesn't sound right. I just placed her on her base, did the dullcote and started to unmask and clean up the top of her base. Very soon I will have final pics! But first there are some leaves that require raking into a pile, jumping in and then re-raking ~sigh~ I wish I had that kind of love of leaves again. Stupid leaves...
