Matty, now that you have made your choice I hope you make the most of it and travel as much as possible :D

I have spent the last 32 years travelling around the world seeing things and doing things most people would only dream of (including the nightmares) and enjoyed every minute of it even looking back at old relationships and even a failed marriage pale compared to the sites and places I have seen and apart from the odd down moment I wouldn\'t change a thing, given the chance to do it all again I would not even have to think of the answer.

In 2 years time I have to look for another job and leave all the travelling and security behind but what the hell that is 2 years away yet and I\'ll worry about that in 18 months time :D

Get out there and enjoy yourself

Dude, why are you talking about \"being stuck in a 9-5 job\"? I\'d say you\'ve been watching too much TV, but apparently you don\'t own a tv. Everybody is \"stuck\" in a 9-5 job. It\'s called life. What do you expect to be doing? Sitting in a field writning songs with a guitar or something? I suppose this would be a good life if you could do it 10-4, but I think you\'re better off getting a 9-5. Of course you could go to Spain and get a bar job or something, one of my friends did that. I consider him to be a drop-out.

30yrs, man and boy, nose to the grindstone, haven\'t had a sick day in my life........

Jazz, give it a rest mate. Seriously, you sound like a pastiche of a cliche of an outmoded way of thinking. I was expecting the Hovis advert music to play as I read your post.

I have several options open to me at the moment, not sure about the contracting route yet haven\'t given that one a lot of thought but there are several options open to me within the defence industry/related companies that people keep telling me the companies would snap me up. Once I leave another option is Facilities Management, if I want to be around the London area then I would be looking at £38k plus my pension and that is just a starter.

With the experience I have I am always being told a job is not a problem for me but do I really want to stay in the UK is a question I find myself asking more and more these days plus I have not had a job interview since I was 15 years old. Unlike the US forces we do non\'t specialise in any one particular field so I have a very wide set of disceplines to fall back on in the Engineering world.

Yeah maybe but at times I want a break and a lot less stress in my life, I think I have earned it lol

Apart from most civvy managers not being able to manage a cup of coffee let alone themselves is there much call for crisis management???

Yeah, I realise having a career is a bit of an archaic way of doing things, but I have always been a traditionalist. I\'m thinking of jacking it all in and joining a commune in Bolivia, I can send you the details if you\'re interested.

Jazz: Correct, I don\'t have any moving wallpaper.

I always thought the glass teat was a great way of washing people into thinking the best way was the white collar way.
And you have proved that.

Moving wallpaper? Glass teat? Am I supposed to know what these mean?

/oh ok TV. Well fwiw tv didn\'t have any influence on me with regards to getting a job. I\'m sure lots of people manage to fit tv into their lives and still be unemployed*, in fact I think it\'s pretty much an essential. I don\'t think it can be considered proof of anything.

*Not that this is comparable to legging it to Spain.

is only as good as the one thing they could all have in common: You.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but when you get to the other side you often find it\'s the same shade.

Chances are good that the girl you believe is the one at 20 is not the one you will be with at 30. In fact, you\'ll probably go through about 5 to 10 more \"right\" girls before you find the truly right one.
If you go to Spain for the girl and things do not turn out well, you will end up resenting her. It\'s human nature.

So, by all means go to Spain, but do not expect Spain to change your life, you must do that, and as others have said, do not go for the girl. Go for you. Go because you want to.

Yeah Dave, sensible as always. I\'m not sure how one could afford to live in such pictureaque surroundings without putting in a full week.

Matty - sorry if I sound unneccessarily sour, but I get annoyed when I hear speak of us working stiffs as pitiable, as if working for a living should be somewhat distasteful to normal people.

Just got through this thread - heavy stuff!

Glad you committed to a decision, Matty! I have always wanted to go to Spain, but haven\'t gotten around to it yet. Where will you be? I especially want to go to Valencia to see the amazing aquarium that was built there.

I agree with several others that your primary reason for going should be to try something different, not just to be with your girl. If things work out with her, great, but even if they don\'t look at this move as an opportunity.

I also agree that there is nothing wrong with settling down, putting your nose to the grindstone, and establishing a secure lifestyle. That is what I did, and it has worked out well for me. I just had to put up with delayed gratification as far as making a decent income, meeting my wife, and having the luxury of travelling. Obviously that isn\'t the only route to a happy life as others on here have already proven.

Whatever road this decision takes you on, enjoy it!
