DiStudios - Heresy Death Guard log

Hi guys,

Hoping that by sharing I can learn some new things and keep motivated to finish a project :) This project was originally meant to be a Pre Heresy Death Guard army, but I liked the Forge World kit so much that I decide to keep the Nurgleness and go Heretic.

First up is Typhon/Typhus, I have been working on this figure since last week. It was by pure chance that I found some spare obliterators and a Typhus kit, as I was never intending to make this character at all. I am glad that I did as I have had a lot of fun working on all the ickiness and old space marine armour themes.

The left arm is pretty much finished and just needs detailing, and the right hand holding the Manreaper is drying as I type, if all goes well Typhus will have all his limbs in place by the end of the evening.

Hopefully I will be going to Salute tomorrow and if the finances work out I hope to break the routine of putting together rows of infantry. Fingers crossed I will be coming home with three Blight Drones!

Please feel free to leave c&c I am always looking to learn new things

regards

Thanks for looking Cheelfy :)

Some pretty good progress as the left arm is now in place, still plenty to do but I am happier to see at least one arm complete and the tassles in place (still need studding though):

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments,

I got back late last night from the Salute convention (loaded with new toys!) and did more work on Typhon, but I was just too tired to take any pics. His right arm (Manreaper is now fully sculpted and in place and today is the tedious task of adding more rivets and studds.

I intend to post pictures later this evening.

Typhus is looking very nice indeed. What kind of converting have you done on the feet of your marines? I notice that most of them have green feet.

Hi Pate thanks for looking.

The feet have been rounded off to look more like plate boots, the original model has too many creases sculpted as they are leather boots. By adding a little bulk and rounding off the front, it allows the legs to better blend in with the space marine torso.

Typhon and the "fleet"
SS101369.jpg

Part of yesterday's loot, three Blight Drones! Only one is finished but I had a great time doing it, the kit goes together so well. I decided not to build all three as Typhon is the primary project, but to break routine I did make a start on the custom bases. No pre-made for me this time, going to get as much sculpting practice in as possible hehe.

SS101371.jpg

Typhon looks a lot healthier with both arms in place, it has been great seeing this figure come together these last few days.

SS101372.jpg

Thrown man now has his head in place!

SS101374.jpg

The back requires a lot of work still, there is too much blank space and I am thinking a general coating of maggots and pustules will solve that problem.

SS101375.jpg

I decided to keep the original Manreaper weapon as I think it looks ok with this sculpt. The only thing that really needs to be done is re-work the wrappings that got scrapped off when removing the original hand.

SS101376.jpg

This was my first time scratch building a hand and sculpting digits. I actually found it frustrating at first but kept going at it. Whatever the outcome, it's something new learnt which is always good :)

A lot of work done today, it's nice to see Typhon coming together finally, I still need to go through some "rivet hell" but it will all pay off. Now that his core structure is in place I just need to detail him a little more, work the base and move on the best bit...painting! :D

Sweet bejesus! That is one hell of a Typhon conversion!

I love the amount of character that you managed to put into the model. He seems to just carelessly fling the space marine away, like he's completely of no significance to him. Very cool.

Thanks for the kind comments JMR :) I have had a lot of fun trying to add action style poses to the army so far.

**Updates**
Lots of pay off as I head to the end of the week. All 3 of the Blight Drones are now clean, built and on custom bases. While some of the bases still need some small details, the bulk of the texturing work is done.

I had a play around swapping Death Guard without helmets out of the troops, I wanted to dehumanise them a little and try to bring forward the image of silent death. Just squad three and some green stuff to go and i can start thinking about priming.

I a really happy with the way these Blight Drones are turning out, I think the extra effort of making my own bases will pay off once it's all painted. Even if my gaming group won't let me use them in games i will be happy enough just to have these cool figures in my display cabinet.

The "Lead" Blight Drone has the most dramatic base detail, I really wanted to get some Maw cannon ooze in the unit. At the moment it looks like a grey mess but once I hit it with the paints and water effects, it should look pretty nice

I really enjoyed building the trench, if I get the time I may use what I learnt on a larger project. From this angle you can just about make out some of the skulls and boney bits protruding from the ooze spray.

Good amount of progress (for me) this week, this weekend is a bank holiday so I have a nice 3 days to finish off the fine details and have everything prepped for priming.

Those Blighty-Drones look great DaemonInk, why on earth wouldn't your gamiing group let you use them?

The ooze enveloping the soldier in the trench is the standout, the way he's falling back under the force of the gloop is a great bit of posing. I'm less sure about the hand & skull in it, is that a fluff thing?

Enjoy the May Day break :good:

Cheers, B.

Thanks for the kind comments :)

Despite the lack of recent updates, I have actually been working hard on this project. I had to wait this week for extra supplies (greenstuff/Procreate and brown stuff) but now that it is here I have been cracking on with the Death Guard infantry details (pictures tomorrow).

Also this week arrived my Forge World Great Unclean One...so many figures not enough time hehe.

I bow to your Nurgleness. I'm trying to finally complete my own army, but nothing compared to yours. I'm jealous! I'm going to follow your thread and get inspired.

Finally some I have managed to play around with some paint :)

I could not resist the Blight Drones any longer, I just needed to try them out. I still need to add two more stages of weathering, paint the "eye" lenses and the base but other than that it is not too far away from completion. It has been a long time since I sat down and really painted anything so I will be happy just to have my first finished figure of the year.

Once this figure is complete, the intention is to move onto a squad of infantry. I am trying to be strict with myself, working on the big thing (drone/daemon etc)/little thing approach (infantry), this way as the months go by I will have amassed a nice army instead of having just a few cool individual models to look at.
