Do you need to be a trained Artist to win Golden Demon?

I know the answer to this question :). The reason for this thread is a rather long rant I stumbled upon on the net yesterday about how it became impossible to win GD unless you are a trained Artist or paint for a living. I know that I have no formal art training, I know that Jérémie Bonamant Teboul has a degree in physics. On the other hand I know that some people actually are indeed trained artists.

So, question to all GD winners out there how many of you actually have formal Art training?

oh for crying out loud..... i have an art degree and havent won one yet.....

those people are just loser boys who cant get over the fact that their are others out there with some great talent and its hard to beat them..... wooptie doo. i\'m sure at some point there will be someone \"better\" and i use that term loosely because its relative people, who will beat the current group of golden demon winners.

look at bill, mathew baich and others who have just started out, they are the future of our hobby when we die, im sure there are others out there who in a few more years will redo something and put the mini world into another double take.

well i have to go be elitist now since i have an art degree. :rolleyes:

well that rant you read must obviously be one of those rants by somebody who can\'t win and just wants to blame their lack of results on anything other than their own shortcomings.

no formal art training here just a degree in geekology and researching the background of the GD worlds..

All you need to win a golden demon is some good painting skills, and vision. Having natural artist ability is helpful but you do not have to be a trained artist. It is definately a benefit but not really required.

Sure an art background can be helpful, but it\'s not necessary. The main areas I could see it being helpful is color theory, where to place highlights, and being able to have a better grasp/understanding of the techniques we use. I find that since I have a significant art background I can more easily work with a new medium than those who haven\'t, which I think has to do with experience rather than talent.

Plenty of people without any sort of art background can paint beautiful miniatures. All it takes is to learn the techniques and be precise. I see the techniques as more of a science. In all of my art courses I have taken (very many) I have seen countless students struggle with creating art. Once they start learning the proper techniques however there is a dramatic improvement in their artwork.

Bottom line is, its all about learning the techniques in this field, not about anything else :)

Yes, it is in the new application form. You have to have a masters in art appreciation and a bachelors in renaissance art.

It was his first year of painting minis. Talent is a small part, but patience, determination, and time are big factors. I realize this more and more since I\'m attempting to break into the competitive scene myself.

the only degree i have is a PHD in THC...
i never even finished high school...

it took me 5 years of tryin\' before i brought home a demon...
now i actually have to paint something specifically for the contest, instead of grabbin\' whatever is in my case...

as has been said, it\'s all about hard work, a bit of natural talent, and a lot more hard work...

I am 6 weeks away from getting my degree in Psychology and Comparative Literature. Hasn\'t really helped my painting much!

Although I did do a conversion based off of an epic poem by Victor Hugo. Sadly never finished it, which is funny because he didn\'t finish his poem either! I guess it\'s nice to know a bunch of stories and mythology when you\'re coming up with ideas...

Well I have no art degree. I have a nearly finished Architectural degree(didn\'t complete my final year) And I have absolutely No Demons, Why?

Because simply put I\'m not good enough yet, oh and don\'t bend to GW pressure to paint the latest mini, or unreleased mini, or latest game/codex/Army book.

These are the things that influence things more than Art qualifications. But if you Believed what Stark said in another thread you should have one to be able to appreciate the art of the minis:D

Well I put my Degree in Packaging Engineering to good use to sculpt miniatures for a living and win a fistful of demons..

So there\'s your answer.. oh wait what was the question again?

I have a Masters in Fine Art, and no it didn\'t help in any way at all!

I only have one demon. As Nigel/Telincus said, I\'m anal, which helped more :D

You\'re much much more likely to win one with what you learn from somewhere like cmon..... which I suppose is training in a way :D
