Dr. Freakenstein**scratch build**

Here is a first for me. It is a little project with my sculptor friend Gordy that has been a pure fun fest. Gordy and I sat down late last summer to come up with some fun ideas in a larger painters scale. I'm doing it for the pure joy of getting to paint a green original sculpture (something I have never done before). This is the first one we came up with which is Dr. Freakenstein from the game Quake (a video game from the 80's). We made contact with the designer who was but a kid (15 or 16) when he designed it. He was very excited to see his creation in 3D. That started the second part of the quest, the designer wanted a couple of copies of the sculpture. I don't know how to do anything but paint and Gordy only knows how to sculpt so our project was dead (for this figure at least). Well it wasn't dead for long, little did I know there is a miniature company in my home town with full casting capabilities. I asked if he would make me a few copies to send to the artist and he agreed and asked if he could make 50 copies for a limited run of the figure. Of course I agreed and the project continued. I just got the green back from the caster which is Thunderbird miniatures and am excited to start painting him. I'll get some primer on him this weekend and begin the painting. I thought some might find it a fun project to follow. We have a couple of pretty cool pieces coming up (there's this hunter girl riding a panther that is really cool) and some might be cast in small batches by Thunderbird but I really don't know yet. One large diorama (six figures) in particular I know will only be a green that is painted with no copies. Enough of the back story, here is the green and I hope it is fun to follow. I have to admit I am scared to death to mess him up.

Wow Quake, ahhhh memories :)
This has started off as a superb project mate, don't worrie
about the painting. Just paint him like any other mini if you start
second guessing yourself it will show in your painting

What a cool project quake was my favourite game of the time. To have a mini that you've had a hand in conceiving going into production well that must realy be something! So you've realy got to show case your skills on this one, no pressure or anything;). Joking aside 10 balls right just go for it.

Looks really cool but to be a little pedantic about your gaming history, it's Quake 2 I do believe, which came out in the later part of the 90s, not the 80s.

Some of the tubular stuff on the back of the seat is a little uneaven and could perhaps have been perfected, but overall the sculpt is really solid and captures the look of him.

For painting, quite mottled textures and strong edge highlights would seem to suit the way the game itself rendered. That's probably the way I'd go. Should be a lot of fun. How big is he exactly?

I can totally appreciate the excitement factor too. My first minis also getting cast at the moment and I couldn't be more excited to get her and start painting. Enjoy it and don't stress about it. Nothing you can't fix, even if it goes completely wrong. It's just paint. Don't hesitate, get stuck in :)

Thanks guys for checking him out. I don't have anything to do with the production that was just a side effect of the project. Lono; the tubes are uneven because they are just tacked in place for the photo I took. He comes apart for painting and is 54mm in size. You are right it was the later version but still cool to me. I'm off to the Atlanta show this afternoon so hopefully Monday I will have an update on the painting. Thanks again

After getting back from the Atlanta show I decided to start painting on this little guy. Started with the face and base coated the jacket and gloves. Here is last nights work. Let me know what you think of the start.

Got a little more paint on him last couple of days. Painting has been slow because of being preoccupied with all the new figures I picked up at the Atlanta show. I think I have about 10 figures that I want to start painting now :) The chair is just getting sketched in. I'm trying to figure out a good way to get the woodgrain just right without looking too fake.

Looking great Milosh, make sure you bring them teeth highlights out - great sculp on the face.
Can not really help with the wood, I always paint it in the GW way which comes out cartoon and your
not looking for that kind of effect. def go for a dark grain wood to bring out the face in the foreground

Looking great coming along nicely. Saw an article about using a base of light tone acrylic across a wooden section and then thinly layering a darker tone oil paint across the top and then when it was still slightly wet use a stiff bristles brush and remove some of the oil paint showing the lighter tone underneath. After that you wait until its dry and then add any further detail as needed. don't know if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs here as you have used oils for a long time, hope it helps.
