Drop Pods for all

Just had a look at the new marine \'dex, and drop pods are now in the official list, with stats and all :).

I think Gw have said they will do a plastic drop pod in the future, but for the time being they only ones available are the FW ones

A full drop pod army would be nice, but at £45 a piece from FW, who would be mad enough to do it?

*cough*supervike*cough

That then probably means that they will include Dreadclaw drop pods when they get around to revamping the chaos codex.
At £75.00 per pod from forgeworld, I can feel the poundsigns spinning in their eyes with eager delight. :D

Ooooh what\'s their profit margin on forgeworld?
300% I believe.

Money hungry vampires, is the term that comes to mind.

I think I remeber seeing somwhere in a ravage an article on how to do your own drop pod. So if you feel couragous and dpn\'t want to give all you\'r money away to the \'evil\' GW well get scratchbuilding :p

...build your own... sez I!

I believe rule-wise, the FW Drop pods hold five marines only, while the codex ones hold ten. Thus, the FW ones will be too small (should be at least the size of the dreadnaught drop pod, which in turn costs more...)
GW is to bring us a new drop pod model, but seeing as that might cost about as much as a rhino (size issues and such), for something that\'s actually just a \"shock marker\"... go figure... get some cardfoam and plasticard and get crackin.... If you wanna build the el cheapo variant, you don\'t even need to build doors... since the fluff clearly states that the doors are blasted off, not hinged... :innocent:

Plan on posting one when I get mine done... more to come!

Ironically, I have seen a few full drop pod armies. All but one of the drop pods have been scratch built as well. In my opinion, the jury is still out as to whether I like this variation of find it \"cheesy\" amd unfair to play against. Has anyone else had the experience of playing against one and what are you opinions?

P
Never fought them, but I so want to get a couple together and throw 2 or 3 dreddies at my opponent that way:D
That would provide with some entertaining eye bulging, if not sound strategy. At least it would get them into the fight.

If you like cheesy, then try putting six dreads in a Space marine army. It is now legal in the new codex and can be done by taking three as heavy choices and the other three as elites. I have played it once also and while it is legal it is not very sporting especially against my army, witch hunters. I think next time I play them I will warp my list to include as many multi meltas and meltas I can load up on as well as plasma guns for all my vets. Personally, I like balance in my army but if you know what you are facing, I see nothing wrong with using good recon and knowlegde of your opponents weaknesses to help you overcome a legal but cheesy list.

P
He\'d be smug until he saw those bristling meltas and inferno type pistols and plasmaslol
That would end that pretty quick.
But six huh? Crazy- now imagine them all in podslol

Odd that you should say that because I think that his longterm goal is to make his 6 dreads into a dred/ drop pod army. Not havig the Space Marines codex here I am not sure how it works point wise however I do know that it would be nasty to play, since at best I would get one shot at each of them before some of them were in assault. Short of arming all my squads with meltabombs or Eviscerators, I would have little to stop them in assault.

P
Thank god you can acutally hit them in HtH now at least. Old rules they had to be immobilzed or something to get at them, wasn\'t it.
At any rate that would suck royal. The points are about 120 for a dred and 30 for a pod= 900. He could still have room for a lot more badness all podding in on you . In a tourney they would have to give you a cheese hat to wear while you played itlol:eek:

Cast up a resin titan and then tell me how much it cost you including tools materials and time and throw in a nice wage for yourself, plus benefits.

I used to think the same untill i did some casting of my own.

To answer you question, try this link below.

Chris Courtney\'s Drop Pods Army

Chris is one of my friends who went to the Toronto GT (and won) with this army. Cost wise, I think it was almost $500 just in drop pods.

Yeah, but FW casting resin Titans is economically dissimilar from you doing it in your garage. They have the miracle of mass production after all, and their per-unit cost drops with each unit sold.

I was rather disappointed with the whole Deathwind thing in the new \'dex tho.
One shot a turn? And somehow still carrying marines? Oh, it\'s a nice addition to an otherwise bring piece of scenery, but it doesn\'t really compare to the weapon-filled abomination (i mean that in a good way:)) that is the Forgeworld Deathwind pod.
Not that truly using such a beast would be a brilliantly fun part of a game, i know.

Myself, i have long-distance plans (work keeps getting in the way of my hobbies...) of constructing drop-pods myself. Not just for price, but for variation (5, 10-man, individuals (ie DoW-style), i was even thinking bikes at one stage (before i thought some more!)) and improvements.
In my mind i see the marines with their backs to the pillars, facing each other. Less good for impact, but artistic license has a part to play here (and since when have exact technical details ever been an issue when looking cool is at stake?). The marines inside the FW ones look kinda bland. I guess it was one of their earlier sculpts.

Truth to tell i\'m not too bothered about using them rules-wise. But part of my theme is drop pod assault, so having at least a couple for looks seems a good idea...

Hmm. Or i could use yet more of this artistic license and make something up about the phenominal heat from atmospheric entry causing extreme perspective distortion, and use Epic-scale pods!

The only miracle of mass production when it comes to casting resin is make more RTV molds. RTV is expensive..where most of the expense of casting resin comes from. Plus the molds do not last very long so its a high turn around rate. If you have ever bought a resin kit and picked out pieces of rubber from tight spots.. means the guy who got the casting after yours got one with chunks taken out of the detail.

As for drop pods, in the back of the new Space Marine codex, those boxy looking things are droppods I assume. And since they all look alike, might they be prototypes to a future marine drop pod?

I think we\'re fortunately safe on that one. I mean, they\'re grey, with no chapter-specific colours or badges. And they have moss on them etc, looking rather more like emplacements.
If i recall, somewhere there was an article on how to make them, and they were down simply as bunkers (to think i still remember the card one they gave out with (i think) WD 169). It\'s not on the net tho as far as i can see, so perhaps i\'m wrong.

They still have artwork showing the normal ones (p29). I think the design\'ll be going for a while yet.
