empire Large scale mini

so, this is what I mostly have been working on lately... a sculpture that I hoped would enter large scale model as an empire swordsman, but I don\'t think I will make it to finnish it in time, becuase of my lack of putty... however, this is what I\'ve done so far ^^

I hope you like it ^^

Bloody hell, you never stop for a rest do you? ;) Very nice start of a sculpt here, smooth. With some details I think it could be great. His pose seems a bit weird though, and his breastplate thing (cuirass?) seems twisted round; the centre bit is poking his leg. I think it would be unnatural for him to twist his whole abdomen like that.

nice work looking forward to having ago at sculptingafter gd..
agree about the pose not quite right.. maybe tweak the right leg round a bit...??
the hands look good and all could benefit from a bit more trimming/sanding to sharpen and smoothen..

good luck..

Helmet visor doesn\'t look right - it doesn\'t look as though it would swing down correctly.

Nice otherwise (Discounting the round edges)

It may be the angle of the photo, but the proportions here just don\'t quite look correct. His head seems a little bit too big for the rest of his body for one, but that could be the way the photo has been taken. I think the main problem though (and I can\'t imagine this is an illusion caused by the angle of the photo) is that his torso is far too skinny and at an unnatural angle.

It looks like you have started working on the breastplate before bulking out the musculature beneath it correctly, which has given it an unnaturally skinny appearance.

I like that you are attempting a dynamic pose though. It will make for a far more interesting finished product. I also know, through several failed attempts I\'ve made at 54mm models in similarly dynamic poses, how much more difficult getting that look right is.

It\'s vital to get the musculature of the entire model completely sorted before moving on to clothing, armour etc. If you get this stage as perfect as you can you will avoid all sorts of problems that could pop up later in the build process.

I think you need to work it back so that you are left with the armature and basic bulking out, then spend a good amount of time building up the various muscles.

If you want to improve how you go about sculpting the musculature of your models then you can\'t get a much better guide to the process than this. Watching these videos by Freeman was a real breakthrough moment for me. He makes it look so simple!

Sort out the groundwork and all of the details you then go on to add on top will look even better.

That advice may sound a bit overly critical. If so, please don\'t get disheartened as I\'m picking on the things that really need to be improved rather than focusing on the fact that you clearly have a lot of ability. I\'m just trying to avoid just going \'wow, he\'s bloody good at this considering his age!\'

hehe, thanks lono ;)

thunderhwaker@ it\'s 54mm tall

lono@ the thing that might get you to think that the head is too big is the fakt that he has a helmet on, and another reason is that he\'s leaning forward (perspective sais it all actually)

I agree what you say about the breastplate, it might have been a bit skinny, but before I started woeking on the metal, I thought that I had got the body just right (especially the back) but I know from previous atempts that I have an ability to make my minis skinny, I will file it down a bit and enlarge the breastplate one of these upcoming days... maby on sat. I haven\'t been working much on this sculpt alot because of my studies this week... however! I think I might be able to get in to the Art High school as work experience for two weeks, that might be a good improvement to come aswell! :D

regarding those movies by freeman... where do I find them? it would be very intresting to watch :)

anyway... I\'ll work on it as soon as I get the time and feel up to it ^^

cheers for the great tips guys! :D

nice vids there. is there a way to download them?

re the sculpt, nice job, i agree that the torso needs to be widened and the angles sharpened. also the breastplate angle needs to be changed. it needs to be to his right but nit quite that far
