:rolleyes:First, I’m my own worst enemy

Two, My CMON rank isn’t all that important ....I use it as a guide toward where I need to improve on my painting. I have the hide of a T-Rex.

Three, We need people like Rev :D

That is very annoying! I don\'t think, however, it\'s anything personal. It\'s just some people being too lazy to even check the most recent threads on the first page if they can find the answers they\'re looking for there. Not to mention, using the search function...

Hmm... I think this goes deeper than sniping and painting.

To put this in context to real life (at least my real life).

A person can have tons of friends and chummy aquaintences YET still dwell on the ONE enemy or perceived enemy constantly, so much so it infects the good in ones life. It is a goofy thing, but it may be a common (although not healthy) humanistic trait.

To put it back into context of minis and painting....As I moderate the comments, sometimes I notice this. A well painted mini will have many many very positive comments. An unbeliveable amount. Then one comment that is less than flattering will come in. The orignal artist sometimes takes issue with that one, ignoring the tons of kudos and focuses only on the severly critical one.

Think about it yourself. If you recieved 100 votes and your mini is averaging an 8, why do we worry about the one person that gave us a 1?

Sounds like you need a pat on the back, EArkham. Or a group hug. lol

Funny, in Danish, a \"hug\" is a blow or a chop, as with an axe....things similar on the surface may actually be quite different....

You state you feel snubbed, that the community has shown signs of treating you as an outsider. Well... to illustrate the difference in perceptions, I\'ve always had you pegged as an insider, quite knowledgeable and well spoken. Always read your posts with interest.

As a posting freak, I don\'t feel that hundreds of \"me, too\" posts would get me anywhere. Respect of the individual user here, as I understand, rest on the quality of the comments and work shown by the users of CMoN. To use a more colloquial phrase, Bullshit Walks. Paint a good paint job, people will notice. Add meaningfully to the discussion, people will notice.

Impossible to disount the value of friendships here, though, as is anywhere else in life. Some people curry more towards some than to others and such will it always be. Byut this place is you and me and eeeeveryone else, ...perhaps it\'s best to take CMoN is as it is, right here, right now and not worry too much about what we think the others are thinking.

I\'m happy to consider you an e-friend, EArkham, as I do everyone else here.

And, Rev, I\'m not guru....just a foolish person in love with the world.lol

enemies are often created through jealousy, so unless you have absolutely ZERO enviable traits, you\'re likely have enemies.

oh, also being a total ass makes enemies too, but it takes a lot more effort.

with Cmon, it seems there are lots of people with enviable traits and lots of total asses...so I\'m sure there are lots of enemies lol

Excellent insight. There are many cases folks can come up with on this... The one Xmas present you didn\'t get as a child as opposed to the dozens you did, the time someone beeped their horn at you because you didn\'t see them as opposed to all the times someone was nice enough to let you in front, the time a store clerk was a piss-ant as opposed to all the times a clerk went out of his way to get something for you... the list goes on.

It\'s probably beyond the scope of this thread, but I find myself interested in what that means psychologically.

I\'m sure that\'s what it is, too. Or (in this case) they felt it really was different enough to warrant a new thread. All fine! Just an example of how things can be read. :)

Thanks. That\'s very kind of you to say. Now I suddenly have a standard to uphold! Argh, the pressure! ;)

I really didn\'t mean to sound whiny or anything... I was just trying to point how a lot of the things that might make us feel like outsiders or enemies are in reality not what they seem. Or just a matter of perception.

My main point was this, so I\'ll repeat it without all the whiny stuff <G> :

So the bottom line is that there\'s no value in simply being popular on some random forum. The value from a forum is its contributions, and the friendships borne from that. The constant crap posts, the \"enemies,\" the sniping, the kiss assing... all meaningless. Don\'t let it give you pause.

chaos, anarchy, and eventually global mini domination! mwwwwhahahahahahaha! if your interested in joining the dark-brotherhood-of-supremely-evil-cmon-rating-snipers (DBSECRS) we meet at starbucks on thursday nights. bring snacks, trust no one.

painting minis is harcore. sex, politics, gore.... performance enhancing drugs. .....

are there any public rivalries?

Well, for a moment there, I thought I was going to be okay :D NO enviable qualities, check :duh:
But then I came to the second part of your statement :( Oh, damn! I guess I DO have enemies :~(
Oh well, at least I\'m still totally immune from sniping ;)

Oh! And @Rev - DR summed it up about as succinctly and accurately as possible, so just go reread his comment and pretend I posted it ;)

Well, I know I\'ve made some enemies and to be honest, it doesn\'t bother me in the least.
As I have one mini on here and don\'t see myself putting any more up in the forseeable future, go ahead snipe away. Even if I were actively painting, go ahead snipe away, they\'re toys, nothing more, you wont hurt my ego.
The internet is a funny thing, with no facial expressions or body language things can be misconstrued very easily.

It\'s the debate I\'m interested in :D

Still, cheers Daub!

I must say, the way the subject has been tackled is pretty impressive. It\'s interesting to strip away the reasons why an \'enemy\' might be made. It\'s amazing how one little sentence got us thinking really. It\'s good to know how/why people come to a viewpoint and it\'s weird in a way to see the results it has on folks\' behaviour lol

It\'s interesting you used no smileys there Dave. That\'s where I reckon some relationships go a bit sour is in not understanding what another person means. It also shows our over-reliance on smileys rather than plain English here.

Smiley anyone?

well, seeing as i have outed DBSECRS i might as well commit. ive sniped. not to be malicious mind you - but because i thought the mini was genuinely overrated. i try not to bias my view of a mini with other peoples opinions - often i wont look at a score, or choose to have them not shown while i vote. just because everyone else thinks something is the cats meow, doesnt mean im obligated to vote within 1 point. before i snipe, i announce my shot. ill usually comment if i disagree with a score (most often because a really nice model, FW or something, with a medeocre paint job , gets a 7or an 8. steams me like a clam). one such incident did earn me an enemy (and a bunch of low votes). the conflict was resoved with some kind words. everyone is here because of a common intrest, so it seems to me that animosity of that type is only temporary.

Smiley anyone?

Speaking face to face allows us to read our conversational partners....body language and tonal inflection give us reams of information that we wouldn\'t have a chance to get if we just listen to the words.

Think of Hal, the computer in Kubrick\'s 2001: A Space Oddyssey. No body language to read, no inflection, no nothing...the astronauts had no idea what hit them. Had Hal been corporeal, had he had a human voice, they would most certainly have had a clue that something was rotten in the state of....well, not Denmark, anyways.lol

Smileys allow us to introduce inflection and body language into our text messages. They let our personality show through the words.

Far be it for me to get into a bout of verbal fisticuffs with you, Rev. Less wits than thine have bested me.lollol

I completely agree on the benefit of the wee faces in our interactions, but I think we over-rely on them too. I\'d like to think that I could pull off conversations without them but often slip into the habit of using a smiley rather than thinking just what I want to write and putting it into understandable sentences.

But hey, smileys are marvellous :D

Ha ha as someone who has been universally disliked since he was dragged kicking and screaming into this world I don\'t realy give a rats ass as to what people think of me and that is both in real life and on the net, lol this has however earned me enemies in real life and no doubt on the net. I think it is very difficult to go through life without upsetting someone in some way no matter how trivial (or not) as the case may be and therefore generate an enemy or two sooner or later.
As some people like to be seen more as artists rather than mini painters I think that also puts a perspective on things as someone who feels this way may be more inclined to take umbrance at those mini painters that may come across as a kind of upstart.
Certainly for me I do not snipe in anyway, I always vote the mini infront of me on the screen in a way that I think is fair and sometimes I will leave comments that I hope are constuctive and helpful, though that too may be seen as pompous by some.
I tink realy it boils down to the fact that whatever will happen will happen and peoples views and differences are many and varied and as the old saynig goes it does not do for us to be all the same otherwise it would be a lame and boring world.
I\'d be surprised if any of that makes any sense at all but I know what I mean. :D

what is fair to you might be construed as a snipe by others. when i said that i had sniped - i was meaning that the score i gave was 2 or more points below the average, NOT that i intentionally scored them below what i thought they deserved so as to lower their score.
i find it hard to believe that enemies exist, in earnest, on CMON. :]

GreenOne

I paint my thumb.
My past experience in other forums or hobby based community tells me that, bigger community tend to become really harsh places
where only the veteran ( posting freaks here.) and admin could place a word without being desroyed mentally by others ( I\'ve so been there.)
So due the size of this community, we\'re pretty lucky it is such a friendly place.

About that sniping thing, I think that\'s really bad. That\'s my very deep comment on it.
However, there is no way that many thousand people in competive relation will be fair with each other. Human nature.
I\'d like to have a new-agist view on this, like Marineboy, for instance... but I can\'t

So dig your hobby, do your best, vote with conviction...
Now, no sniping could ever deter a meaningful comment so rely on what people say, not on the digits.

Like Jesus (Or Bob Marley, not sure.) said so well:
Who the cap fit, let them wear it.

Good points about the use of Smileys. Interesting how we were able to exist for centuries without them. Don\'t remember any emoticons in Homer, Shakespeare, Dickens, Poe, Twain, etc. yet we seem to understand them (all be it, some of them with a bit of a struggle. Camus and Sartre could both do with a few smileys here and there) Some of us are much more expressive in our use of them than others, too. For example, I\'m convinced that Leopardpixie could write at least an entire short story using nothing but her assorted smileys. :D

\"It\'s true Sir Dauber Twenty Two,\" Tzor said with a grin, \"that the noble bard used neither smiles nor the writing of the leet, but then again it is rather silly to engage in dialogue as though it was some text in a novel or something.\"

Interesting topic for sure---
Generally speaking, I don\'t dwell on it too much. It does bother when I don\'t know how I\'ve \"earned\" a particular enemy---especially considering that I\'m a super easy- going guy that doesn\'t take much of anything seriously. Of course, I guess that could be a problem when someone wants to be taken seriously.

On another note, through my various successes, I\'ve determined there is always someone just waiting to attempt to kick your feet out from underneath you.

That is, their personal success seems to be measured against their ability to provide obstacles for anyone that dares to excel.

A strange way to measure self-worth----but my experiences have proven to me that it is indeed the predominent metric.
