However, there is no way that many thousand people in competive relation will be fair with each other. Human nature.
oh, im fair
my point was that \"sniping\" is subjective, and that honest opinions can be mispercieved (obveously the proper smilies were not used) and cause conflict.

dont be fooled, this forum shares many characteristics with those mean-ol harsh forums you refer to. there is definately a buddy system, and the \"old guard\" definately run the show ( i feel the eyes of a dozen new, all-powerful enemies). still, people are unusually nice and courteous...maybe there is somthing in the paint? :|~

i feel a new thread coming on....\"the history of smilies\"

@Funnymouth, I was not speaking about you, just resuming on what I though the topic was about when it started. I\'m late here. Missed the part about smiley.
( More than a thread, the subject deserves a complete thesis,I think.)

Speaking of new threads, we could have one used for stirring s*** between users, so everybody would know who doesn\'t like them
and differences could be settled outisde the topics that sometime don\'t deserve to turn into
.. well, something else.

So we\'d have replies like: \" If you don\'t like it, we can take it to the \"family laundry\" topic\"
( Or whatever you\'d name it ( French canadian would get the joke here.).)
Well that\'s just an idea I had...

If anyone don\'t like me, for instance because I ask questions about NNM, or whatever, I sure would like to know....
... so I could snipe them afterward, so the cycle of human nature will go on and on...:p

@rev; I\'ve been hiding in a ditch with a sharpened spoon. Just to leap out and stab you in the ear.

You never passed, so I\'ve given up now, so over the months of living in a ditch with the sole purpose of stabbing you in the ear. I no longer hate you, I am on the whole ambivolent (so much so I can\'t spell it!).

 I hate smileys now!

Donga, I got wind of your scheme and avoided that road. Sad to say though, I got raped by seven lady enemies :(

And that\'s quite an interesting point. I read about that happening to a bloke once. I think it was in the News of the World. He wasn\'t happy.

I thought that was physically impossible? Images of forcing dough into a purse spring to mind...........

I have no idea if I have made enemies or not. I think not because I am so darn nice really. But as has been said some people will take offence and over react. Look at road rage people will kill each other over not indicating a turn! It is hardly surprising that some will get obsessed about toy soldiers and our conversations about them.
I enjoy reading well thought out arguements and pretty much take an interest in comments from all those who have posted on this thread before me.
Oh and by the way ???lol

Good points about the use of Smileys. Interesting how we were able to exist for centuries without them. And yet sometimes can\'t live without them.

Don\'t remember any emoticons in Homer, Shakespeare, Dickens, Poe, Twain, etc. yet we seem to understand them (all be it, some of them with a bit of a struggle. Camus and Sartre could both do with a few smileys here and there) Just a few! Razor blade city sometimes, you have to be completely in a \'Strong\' frame of mind to read some of their works

Some of us are much more expressive in our use of them than others, too. For example, I\'m convinced that Leopardpixie could write at least an entire short story using nothing but her assorted smileys.
True :D

@reverend: I must admit that when I read your original post starting this thread, I didn\'t pick up on any real complaint about sniping per-se! What did come across was more of a query about percieved \"Enemies\" on the forums.
Regardless of the intent, we have all picked up people who dislike us in real life and in our Cyber existance.
I know I have two people IRL at work who really dislike me (basically because I called them on issues that they were trying to plant blame on my staff for, which were there own shortcomings), several outside for various reasons and at least one who plagued me for a while electronically.

However it\'s not how paranoid they can make you but how you can either rise above their dislike, or treat them as friends. That really P****s them off more.

Anyhow as I said in my first post; You are a literate and articulate person who often takes a stand on issues that you have opinions on.
So are others.
Power to you all.

You know what they say Rev. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.....lets be friends :D

i love :) :)\'s please dont snipe me ;)

I think there is also the ones that vote lower than what they would normally do because they think a mini is currently too high. They just suck as one person shouldn\'t have the right to be the overall judge but part of the jury. Damn i hate them folk....erm...none of this is a fact its just all in my head

Enemies i know of.....erm i can think of one that would take joy in bringing me down.....whoops i better go and watch my ratings drop lol

Last week all of my top five minis got a boost of votes and four of the five dropped ......Mmmmmm paranoid ...maybe, maybe not. Saying that though they are now back to what they was but i dropped nearly 100 places overnight.

Anyway Rev the fact his we need folk like you. You kinda have the knack of shaking folk up, kicking them in the balls and bringing them back to reality.:D I dont know why folk would be your enemy lol

To put it back into context of minis and painting....As I moderate the comments, sometimes I notice this. A well painted mini will have many many very positive comments. An unbeliveable amount. Then one comment that is less than flattering will come in. The orignal artist sometimes takes issue with that one, ignoring the tons of kudos and focuses only on the severly critical one.
sorry to go back to this earlier post. I think this reaction stems from the incredible amount of care, effort and time that some people put into their miniatures. When you have devoted so much of yourself to create your best work, it can be hard not to take an unjustifiably negative comment as a personal insult - so much of yourself has been poured into the painting, that it can feel like the insult is directed at you and not the miniature. This is of course irrational, but rationality often has no place in your immediate feelings!

Having said that though - as someone who is new to CMON, I think I\'ve had a very good and generous votes and comments on my miniatures, despite the inevitable bias towards more well-known artists. Such bias is only natural; of course we all pay more attention to the miniatures painted by a proven master, whether subconsciously or not (I know I do!). But I jsut wanted to say that as a relatively unknown painter, I haven\'t had any difficulties or negativity - so thanks everyone! Or maybe it\'s because I haven\'t been on the forums long enough to make any enemies!

As far as making enemies though, I don\'t think constructive criticism of a miniature, given in a reasonable way, would ever lead to enemies being made. Any criticism can be hard to take at first - as I said before - but if constructive points are made and discussed then I find the opposite occurs, and new friends can be made. After all, someone taking the time to leave a constructive comment on a mini shows that they have an interest in seeing a painter improve.

Or if you already have enemies, the best way to deal with it is to act reasonably and rationally in the same way, and not get carried away when tensions run high. If you act in this wa then over time all can be forgiven, i think.

Sorry, this has been a bit of a long, off-topic ramble. I\'m sure these points have been made before!

Enemies me......damned right I have.
I reckon just about every Alexi_Z fan is my enemy by now and probably plenty others.

See I think I have strong views on certain things and if I feel strongly enough about something then I will speak up no matter how much it could strengthen or weaken my possition in social circles.

This has not just resulted in online arguments but plenty of real life ones too.

I like people who speak their mind and no matter if I agree with them or not I will respect them for doing so.

Now that\'s a smiley if I ever saw one.

Authors all through the ages have used the language itself to depict a mood. Sjorthand writing as we use here in the forums doesn\'t have room for that....most of the time, in any case.

Smileys are a shortcut.

I do thought agree, Rev, that plain and non-ambiguous language makes the task of understanding our forum partners easier...how often is it though that we state literally what is is that we mean.

At the ripe age of 24, I undertook the learning of a foreign language. For years, my greatest sorrow and regret was that, though I had a large enough vocabulary to make myself understood in normal conversation, my grasp on the idiomatic language was not good enough to understand witty, funny or rude comments the locals used..I couldn\'t always understand their meaning though I understood their words.

Lots of cultures are represented here on CMoN. It\'s impossible for us each to understand the idiomatics of all the others....smileys just help us out.

More of them, please.

IMO you come across as possibly the nicest, most laid back guy on the site...:flip:

Remember - just because your paranoid -

Doesnt mean the\'re not out to get you!

My own hang up is killing threads - it seemed that when I post no-one posts after me!

Perhaps this explains why I don\'t post so much any more?

Now I will have to keep checking to see if this happens here:(

I have a long way to go

hello everyone :)

I am entirely new to this website, and I don\'t have any friends, but this also means that I have no enemies. I think. This confuses me: maybe there is someone who has taken a disliking to me, by taking a grudge against my very small contributions to this website and its community. ??? It is indeed an interesting thought to mull over... it makes me wonder, do I come across as an insolent pup, do I know nothing about minis and my opinions do not make any difference? I have no idea. I will try to make all my posts and any other contributions worthwhile, hopefully nobody will decide that I am a moron who needs sniping ;) I have a while to go before making any connections!

Happy painting

Bill :)
