Since GW stopped selling bitz (much to their customer’s chagrin) do you think it is ethical to cast your own? Would you be willing to buy recast bitz?

Dear E,B . I think its completley ethical to cast bits yourself.Press moulds are easy to do.
If they expect me to buy a box of Marines (£25 ) ,every time I need a plasma pistol ,they can shove it were the sun dont shine !:moon:

However get stuff from a company who is casting their stuff and selling it on is ,I am pretty sure Illegal.

If the mighty G.W. got wind of it their legal boys would swoop down on the offender like a super hero on acid ! :D lol :D lol ;)

GOD bless ................VINCENTI

Solely for personal use I would cast items.
I would not cast for an attempt to make a profit.

GW\'s removal of Bits (bitz) is a short sighted attitude and has dismayed more than just their customers, a number of GW managers and staff members are concerned that they are no longer able to supply the customer\'s needs and have suggested \"Off the Record\" that Customers need to write in and complain. Pointless placing an email as GW take little stock in them, despite emails having the legal status of a letter.
However putting the time, effort and expense into paper, Gw take more notice.

If you want to complain and try to change their mindset Write in and encourage others to do the same.

Yes.

No. That is commercial theft, different ballgame.

Agree with what\'s been said so far - \"Personal use\" ;) is fine, but trying to resell cast bits would be wrong.

Really asking two questions here.

From an ethics point of view it would be unethical to cast your own from their work, also illegal.

That being said I\'d do it anyway I suppose if I was really that interested in GW bits. Luckily for me I started losing interest in GW long ago as their prices kept going up and up and up and up while they selectively target certain countries for extra gouging (like Canada where we pay 50%+ more for the same thing you can get in the US).

I\'ve never really considered myself an overly ethical person when it comes to this sort of thing. :drunk:

I think I\'d pass on recasting bitz since the results would inevitably be disappointing. Also, you can buy a lot of bitz from certain eBay resellers who buy boxes and break them up.

I personally think it\'s very hard to decide...

Sure, for personal use - why not... but... What if it\'s a rare and old mini? what if you get your personal use out of it, paint the mini, keep the mini, display the mini and then after some time, sell it to someone as part of an army?

What might be a common mini or part now could well be rare on the collectors market later on.

Ethically, because of the grey area, I guess I can only say that I would never re-cast anything as some poor collector might buy it thinking it was real later on down the line and I may forget what\'s genuine and what\'s re-cast.

Of course, this is just me.

as an artist, i dont like the idea of someone stealing ideas from me and using it in their artwork.

that said, after a while, a popular image becomes so well known that it ceases to be the original artists and becomes part of the worlds art. that is in my opinion a wonderful flattery. so to have other people copy work and use the ideas in their own way and become sooo overwhelmingly popular shows that the work has infiltrated the mainstream concouisness. this said, at one point if GW becomes big enough (which wont happen) they could not themsleves keep others from copying them.

look at disney tattoos. characters so beloved that people have gotten tattoos of disney characters. of course disney will try to go after people who dont have official \"sanctioned tattoos, but who really cares.

my two cents have added.

Cake or Death?
I\'m in the school of \"the rules are the rules\" thought - partly because of my religious beliefs, and partly because of my own wild past. I think it sucks b**** that GW wants increase their profit margin by forcing us to buy full models for conversion pieces, but I simply don\'t find miniatures collecting important enough to break the rules on this. As much as I don\'t like it, no one\'s life is in danger, nor are their actions destructive. YMMV.

I\'m all for bugging the hell out of GW to get them to change their minds, though.

plain and simple: saving money. they saw it as unprofitable as they made casts of whole models and and broke them down to bits. so plain and simple they just needed to save some money. its a shame really...but as i have heard DR say on many occasions, if you dont like it, dont buy it.

as for making your own casts..... thats a whole other story. :)

Well I think it\'s \"ethical\" to cast my own for my own use, but I\'d not sell bits on. That\'s not because I think it\'s immoral or anything just that I might fall foul of the law, not for any concern over GW.

Lets face it GW and other corporations are not out to help you they are out to make a profit and they will do this at all costs. They will trample on people if it suits them and doesn\'t hinder their profit. If someone tries to trample on them they usually have the financial might to fight back - after all they have a legal department and I don\'t know about you but most people cannot afford top-noch legal representation.

My view is that corporations are essentially insincere and immoral - if a person behaved like a corporation we\'d probably find their personality dreadful. Corporations spend billions convincing you that they are your friend but really they do only what suits them so I feel no obligation to look out for them and their interests. I do however look out for people, so ripping of an independent sculptor on a lower income would really sit badly with me on the moral scale of things.

I have no problem with casting my own bits, or getting someone to do so for me, but theyd have to be up to standard.

As for my feelings towards GW.........

Bring back bitz by the gram!

In other news, I agree that casting for personal use is fine as long as it meets criteria:
1 - Its not a whole model
2 - Its solely to fill gaps or needs in an army, or to meet the needs of a diorama
3 - If you are using it in a competition piece, ensure its not a GW competition (store or GD, etc)

Just my two cents.
