We\'ve had movies, music, and pets on this forum and now for something completely different:
Game Genres
I know all of you have to be familiar with SOME types of games, otherwise you wouldn\'t be here! But besides the simple sci fi/ fantasy mini games, what do you like for computer or console games? And, of course, why? Because I want to be a video game designer, this\'ll acutally help me down the road!

Me, I like Fighting.. (and video games sometimes, too!) I can\'t stand racing games because I can never seem to go fast enough, yet I somehow have managed to go over the speed limit all the time to school and never get a ticket.. :p

I like the Roleplaying type games like the Star Wars KOTOR, Forgotten Realms Ever Winter Nights... the Strategy games like Command and Conquer and the 1st person shooter games like Tomb Raider, the various WWII games that I am drwaing a blank on right now. As for why not sure its just what I have always liked. I can\'t stand the pay to play games like WoW, Everquest, and Evercrack.. er quest. :D

RPG\'s for me...mostly console-based out of Japan. Used to do MMORPG\'s a lot, but I\'ve been MMO-sober for a while now. ;) I also like some action games, strategy games, and occasionally a simulator.

And honestly, never been a huge fan of actual miniature GAMES...mostly, I like the hobby.

I play EVERYTHING...

You forgot boardgames, cardgames, Hand-eye coordination games like Jacks and pick-up sticks, Trading card games, puzzles like crosswords and word jumble, etc...

The platform category could be further sub-divided into side-scroller, puzzle solving, etc...

But I only know these things because I enjoy everything:D

Tabletop: I\'ve never actually played a mini\'s game, but I have a Warmachine Army

I love Risk (1981 East Coast regional champ), Yatzee, Pictionary, Masterpiece, just about every RPG ever made, MOORGs, Anything made by Blizzard or Sid Meir, Magic the Gathering, Diplomacy, etc, etc...

In other words, I LOVE GAMES!

except for FPS\'s; except for the original DOOM I hate being a hand. I need a little more to go on to immerse myself.

RTS and Flight sims. IL2 Sturmovic is not to be believed. Not for newbies. I had played ALOT of flightsims and found it tough at first. LOMAC is also very cool but very hard.

i vote shooter but i absolutely LOVE games like Devil may cry and Otagi... *desperatly trying to find Otagi 2 but its no where to be found! :mad:*

Turn based strategy for me...

-Rome: Total War is one hell of a good game... that and its predecessor, Medieval: Total War cost me weeks of my life...
-Civilization (mostly civ2, \'cause of the neat cheat mode... :p )

The Bioware D&D games rock (Icewind Dale 2 in particular)

And the king of all 1st person stealth-ers: Splinter Cell!

... I need to beef up my machine to be able to play Doom 3 (in a decent look) and the Rome battles with huge units... bruahahahah!

Ah tough one. It was between FPS and RPG...

Oh btw I\'m pretty sure it\'s \"Devil may cry\" (and by the end of the game it\'s won\'t cry :p)

Counter-Strike: Source (and 1.6) Battlefield 1942 (eagerly awaiting BF2), Planetside and Half-Life: 2 pretty much cover it for my FPS\'s on the compy

Gemstone IV (MUD), Everquest, Everquest II, Lineage, Lineage II, Ragnarok Online, World of Warcraft, Planetside (It\'s an MMOFPSRPG, go figure), EVE Online, Neverwinter Nights, Matrix Online, and umm... I think that\'s it for recent RPG\'s (Less recent is like Diablo II :p) I\'m also hoping to snatch GM status on a game coming out late this year called \"Heroes Journey\", I have a history with Simutron and hoping I have enough brownie points saved up.

I also use to be pretty big on the Age of Empires games (Have all of them, including Mythology and Empire Earth... Go Microsoft lol), Stronghold, Rome Total War, Warcraft, Command and Conquor, Starcraft. These are my RTS, of course.

Table Top is pretty much limited to Dungeons and Dragons and Warlords

Not big on console, do love my Zelda though. Unreal Tournament isn\'t too bad if you don\'t have a computer handy :p Played and beaten all the Final Fantasy\'s, all the Grand Theft Auto\'s (exept San Andreas). I have an N64 and a Playstation 2. Oh Sonic the hedgehog... I don\'t play it anymore but I played it every day for like 3 years, 5 years ago lollol

God I play like a billion more games... I\'m looking through my CD\'s at all the games I have (and still play regularly)

Hmm I guess I really do have no life... :(

I\'m a casual gamer. I put down RTS because that what I played most of (Dune 2, C&C in its various forms and some of the many clones). I recently did C&C generals and WC III, and I found myself pretty bored with C&C, WC was a little better because it gave me a character that advanced from mission to mission so I felt a bit more connected, but I still found myself doing the same old things. I think the genre has become rather tired. I spent weeks playing Dune 2, I would stay up all night and skip lectures, so clearly I used to like thios sort of game.

Recently I\'ve tried FPS, they can be fun, but I suck mightily at them so play on easiest settings (actually I suck at most comp games). I often find I have to cheat to be able to complete soem games. Of these I loved Max Payne, largely because of its intelligent difficullty level, it did a great job of keeping things hard enough to be interesting but not so hard I gave up. The decent story and slightly weird elements helped too.

I was playing GTA III, but I got a bit bored with it and have stopped playing it about 1/3 of the way through. I liked Diablo, but that was a little formulaic as well, BG and Icewindale were fun (preferred BG), and I spent days playing them, but my current favourite is WOW. This game seems to have a staggering depth to it. I can play essentially single player, or I can interact with or against other people, I can go fishing and herb collecting, or I can run around killing monsters or players. I was amazed when I go to my first city, it actually felt like a real city! It has excellent balance built in with the different level areas. This game has really gripped me, and I think it will be a long while before I\'m bored of it.

I forgot some, Starcraft was great at the time, but now its old, Stronghold was awesome, lots of fun, love that game, I could spend hours just building castles, although the AI was rather weak, I would like to see more like it.

BF 1942, that was fun, but I got tired of it pretty quick, but then I never played it online, so maybe I\'d like it more then (I doubt it though, I\'d just get my ass handed to me on a plate all the time...)

I should alos say something about what I dislike in games, point saves, NO, NO, NO. I want to be able to save when I want, not when and where you think I should.

You know they have a stronghold 2 coming out? In 1 week... (April 19th)

Most games (ESPECIALLY first person shooters) I play online, there just not fun offline for me. I always put the bots on the hardest difficulty (Which is usually like a newbie with aimbot) and still slaughter them. If you ever come to Counter-Strike: Source give me a holler and I\'ll help you get better.

Point saves aren\'t so bad if they have enough of them...

And yes, WOW is one of the best MMORPG\'s I have played. It is not the best graphically (Not bad graphics, but maybe a little cartoony) but it\'s one of the RPG\'s I would play for the sole-purpose that it\'s FUN! I don\'t have to grind for hours and hours in order to level. I can just hang out, do quests with my friends (which will level as good as grinding) or hell, go burn down a village!

A good goal, and you\'re on the right track.
Favourite type of game here?

RTS. Medieval: Total War (haven\'t bought Rome, yet). HOMEWORLD! The original. Cataclysm bit, and Homeworld 2 is very narrowly available. Have to have one of 2 video cards to be able to play it. Bleah. Of course, I don\'t. Own one, but have yet to install it.

Stronghold\'s not bad.

Once you\'ve established which genres are popular, your next step is to find out \'What did these games do wrong?\' and \'What did these games do right?\', in whichever genre you decide to aim for.

Research! You\'re asking gamers, so... get critiques on games from volunteers. Not just the magazine nonsense ones that are written by one guy, but as many opinions as you can get on as many games as you can get them on.

The best factors, you can adapt and/or use, and the worst, you know what to fix.

Heck, put together your own game company. You\'ve got a whole flock of alpha/beta testers right here on CMON.

A more helpful group of people, I\'ve never encountered. And most of them are darned smart, too. (Not me)

I can\'t possibly just give you one genre I like... I like to manage things, so basically everything that has some player-dependant character development or something like that might very possibly make it into my heart. I suppose I prefer RPGs, but I also like FPSs, Platformers, Fighting Games.... you specified Horror Games as a stand-alone Genre, well, there are several Horror Games I like - Eternal Darkness might have been THE best Horror Game I have ever played, while Clive Barker\'s Undying actually managed to scare the shit out of me.... Resident Evil is nice too, but I don\'t like Survival Horror too much.
For RPGs, you can\'t beat Planescape: Torment. That game is simply great, the storyline is the best I have ever seen and the characters are at the same time absolutely freaky and totally believable.

Games, games, games...

I refuse to pollute my computer with games any more and stick to my PS2. PC games take up so much memory and seem to be like ivy, they put \'roots\' down everywhere..

Final Fantasy...always a favourite and loved the last couple.

Tomb Raider has a nostalgic place in my heart..\"Jump!!!! You big-titted bitch!!!\" The war-cry of Tomb Raider officianados everywhere:D

Ace Combat Just finished the latest version - Squadron Leader - Brilliant!! Does have a few annoying glitches, but it has occupied me for several dozen hours over the last few weeks. I know purist flight sim fans don\'t like this game, but boy, does it get exciting in parts:bouncy:

I\'ll have to say fighting games as the last time I played was when Tekken 3 was out lol and before that they were still the best games anyway ;)
