Fires in California

That was Larry Himmel. A long time local news guy. Everyone loves him...anyways, they showed him and his family sifting through the ashes the next day. It was pretty sad. I don\'t think anyone can really understand a Santa Anna fire until you actually experence it. The flames go sideways at 60 to 90 miles an hour...there is just no way to stop them. The fact that the firefighters were able to save a majority of the homes is a real testament to their work ethic. Kudos to them!
I just took my lunch break and the city of Santee in East County where I work is starting to fill up with smoke. From what I hear the Harris fire is burning up around our Southern edge of the city. Hopefully it keeps heading east or we are in trouble yet again!

I thought LP was a Cali local, just wasn\'t sure. Glad to hear she\'s okay. She works with animals doesn\'t she? Did she say whether they\'re okay?

I believe Eric J is way up north. He should be fine. California is a big place. 10 to 12 hour drive to drive the length.

Didn\'t Eric J live in Santa Cruz? That\'s about 400 miles north. About 100 miles south of me.

hi all - im in SLO california, the fires are far away, but its still hazy from all the smoke. i know a lot of people who have been displaced though. sucks. scary.
I and every one I know is safe. : ) A few close calls for some of my friends. They had to evacuate and by the time they got out, the fires were only about 3 blocks away, but nobody i know has lost a house yet.
Work is about 9 or so miles north of the Irvine fire (my apartment is an extra 3) and lucky that our biggest problem here is falling ash and breathing smoke all day. I\'ll go through half of a pack of cigarettes in a day and feel like I\'ve smoked two packs worth. I believe J2FcM is still Irvine, but I don\'t know where and hope he\'s well and safe.
Hope and well wishes to everyone in San Diego. It\'s super crazy down there. Everyone keep as safe as possible.

Someone explained that to me recently... and I was like, \"oh, I thought it would just be a few hours on that twisty seaside road that\'s in all the movies\". Duh.

lol That bit is a few hours. Then theres a few hours on either end of the road to get to the southern or northern boarder. California is the size of a small country. You can drive across East to west in a few hours tho\'.

SMALL lollol. California is bigger then Germany and almost twice as big as UK; not China or Russia, but still :]

In that case I guess if this fire had been in the UK, half the country would have burned! Thats one big ass fire.

This is the UK you are talking about.......
in some cities a fire like that would be called Urban Renewal.
Besides, you\'ve seen how much rain we get.

im also from SoCal and i live in OC. Luckily, i am a distance from any of the fires (about 20mi) but my school is literally down the street from the Santiago one though it is a full 10mi. A few of my classmates were ecacutated, but thier damages were minimal. Thankfully the winds are dying down and the fire fighters are getting a grip on them. The Irvine fire was suspected of being arson and they even believe it may have been a former fire fighter since it seems the person knew what they were doing. The fires have actually become a national crisis like Katrina.
