Forest Troll WIP

Hi all,

Here is the latest mini I\'m sculpting, a big nasty troll. It is 30mm scale so 54mm to the top of the head - normal troll size I guess.

The figure is done in FIMO classic, champagne color. That one seems to have the best consistency for me, and balances firmness with stickiness.

The first part is the base body, before most of the detail and with only the skin folds and cracks. I used a pretty soft wire armature, 20 guage copper, for the main limbs and torso. The only reason is that I like to bend it while working, at least until the first \"firing\" in the oven. The head was done separately as it was fairly complicated to put together for me. I also like to rotate the head around and find a good position before finally securing it and making the neck.

So once the main body was attached, I put on a bunch of fungal growth all over, with small mushrooms and one big shroom. The ears have a wire support as they were too fragile to make othereise. greenstuff would have been strong enough to do them without a wire but epoxy putties hurt my skin, and I tend to lick the sculpting tool so my lips end up burning - not a good sign.

OK, what I\'m not sure about is how folks will react to a troll that doesn\'t wear pants. This is supposed to be a wild creature (IMO), so it does not feel the need for clothes. The only thing down there to give the appearance of clothing is a patch of fungus. Now that may be going too far, especially considering that his junk is visible behind his belly amid that fungus. Maybe I should make a PG version with no visible junk and some rags in front and back.

So the next part will be the weapon (tree branch with bugs) and base (more bugs and mushrooms and other growth). If there is anything anyone wants to add, just let me know.

if you want a pg version i would just add more fungus to the back

Good sculpt all around mate. I wouldn\'t worry too much about PG version or not? :)

yeah the nipples are too round... I dont know how to describe it other then nothing about this guy is \"perfect\" (as in hes a troll, not the sculpt is bad) and his nipples look like buttons. Other than that I love all the little details specifically the bugs on his stomach.

Thanks for the comments! I already removed the nipples and plan on making them less rounded and protruding. The roaches are hit and miss with most people. I think they will stay though, since they make this one a little different from other trolls.

Looking pretty damn cool.

I would leave him as he is tbh, doesnt need any clothes but maybe he could have a belt and then like a few bits hanging of it to save his blushes, maybe a fish or something like that??

Just a thought... have you decided on what weapon he is gona have? im presuming a club

How many times can you fire FIMO before it goes bad?

Great sculpt by the way. The world needs more trolls with their bits and pieces showing :)

Fimo is pretty cool stuff. It can be fired as many times as one likes. It is really easy to use and doesn\'t need to be mixed and used before a time limit like epoxies. It is nice for me as I only get a half-hour here or there, and I can fire it as soon as I am done. I use lower heat than it says on the package though, so there is no chance of burning it.

Can you go over how you actually build up the fimo on the armature. I know it might sound silly but I always have problems with this stage of sculpting, what I mean is do you wrap a piece around the wire or stick a blob on one side, a blob on the other etc.

Sure thing! The starting phase is pretty important so it is good to get it right from the beginning. For the torso, I take a chunk and roll it around the wire to cover it, adding more to the areas over the points where the wire is weak. The limbs get one piece, pressed onto one side, or two pieces on either side. The main thing though is to cover the whole wire. I like to just press on either side with finger and thumb and make a rough 2-d shape of the muscles to get an idea of volume.

This is then baked to lock it into place. I tend to put less clay at the elbows or knees or hips so I can move them around and get a better final pose. After this I always trim away excess clay. I do alot of trimming and scraping all throughout, so the process in about 3/4 sculpting, 1/4 carving.

Then I just add more layers of clay on top, adding them in major muscle masses, like biceps and triceps around the arm and smooth things out.

Hi all,

The troll is now done and painted. Sorry, but I skipped over the last bit of sculpting photos and went straight to casting and painting. The figure is available now to buy for those interested. It will be in the CMON store soon too.

when you fire the sculpt how do you keep it upright? also, do you know if corks are suitable as a base when firing in an oven?

That\'s turned out pretty cool. A nice sculpt and a good paint job to boot. I reckon it should prove popular.

I keep the armature in a GW pin vice, the one with the hexagonal bottom that stands up. It makes it easy to hold the model and bake it.
