I thought I would sahre this post from you over at the PP forums which have turned into something resembling a GW forum but with more whining.

Some guy is complaining because Jen Haley entered the Gen Con PP contest and steamrolled the competiton and the rest of the fanboys are complaining that professionals should not enter major painting contests.

the same thing happens with a lot of the gd\'s.

people expect to slap some paint on a model quickly and win a painting comp.

i would rather spend 20 hours on a mini and lose, than to spend 2 hours and win easily.

The problem is, of course, how do you define \"professional\"? Many GD winners etc. sell their winning pieces on eBay, and many many other contestants do occasional commissions at least. How do you prove you don\'t ever make money off your minis? Or should they just ban Jen Haley, Alexi, etc. along with anyone else who is \"too good\"?

Theres always going to be those people that think the path they tread should be an easy one (cuz lets face it, the world owes them so much!). If you want the top spot work at it! If you loose, then be content it was to the better man/woman...and get over it for christs sake! lol

People shouldn\'t blame others for being too good. Its up to each person to improve their entries and compete.

I think it\'s a good idea to have a contest open only to amateurs.
That\'s not what that contest is, so they should stop whining.

(Oh, I would call an amateur anyone who makes less than 50% of their annual income through converting or painting miniatures)

i think its just silly to disqualify people because they are good. to compete in an open competition is to compete against the best. thats the whole friggin point, thats why winning is an honor. maybe they should hand out gold star stickers to the losers so they dont feel sad.

in most other types of competitions there are divisions, based on skill level (or weight class lol). that principle is tough to apply to mini painting because its not an organized sport. it would have to be on faith. those same punks that bitch about the pros would enter a comp they could easily win, screwing people honestly in that \"class.\"

suggestions: offer prizes (trophies) relative to the class. the higher the rank, the better the prize. thusly motivated by greed persons would enter the category with the best prize that they had a chance of winning. still not perfect though. alternatively painters could be grouped via a ranking system (cmon rank, for example).

If you wanted to get really organized you could base it on the USFA system.
You get a ranking based on how you perform in tournaments, dependent upon how many people entered the tournament and on what the rankings of the people you beat were.
Or we could just say screw it and keep having fun trying to get better.

I agree! It\'s good to have a target to aim for. If were to get beaten by someone, i\'d strive to match or better the standard.
Being a nay-sayer sure as hell won\'t win you any prizes :]

Bah... people that lose will always whine and cry about not winning. I enter comps expecting to lose, mostly don, but when i rank just third i\'m tickled about it. I do it for fun and to see how much better i did from the comp before the last one. Personally i would never enter a major comp like gencon, origins, gengiscon or the like. I know the caliber of people entering into them. Doesn\'t mean i wouldn\'t hang out and try to be a fanboy to the better painters for tips. besides if i did compete with say Jen Haley i wouldn\'t cry i lost, instead i\'m most likely brag and say \"yep, i competed against her and got my ass stomped but damn what a nice miniature she had painted and it\'s no suprise she won.\"

Or long post short... people need to shut the hell up and get over it.

First, everyone who went to GenCon and saw it in person, knows that it deserved to win. Second, PP made it a $1200 prize. Unlike GW, they put their money where their mouth was. Third, it was open to everyone ( except PP employees, I think ), so any of the whiners could have tried as well. And finally, she teaches classes to painters so that they can learn to do it too.

Maybe they should have a Category for the old \"pros\". That way they wouldn\'t decimate the guys like me. But then again, there would just be more whining involved I guess.

If they dont want to get beaten the either
a. Dont ever enter or
b. Only enter local stuff where you know you will win
either way its not much incentive to get better. Im entering my first GD this year and I know Im going to get hosed but I need to do this if want to get better. Man up guys its only a painting contest.

I was banned from a local store competition because I had a Silver GD trophy and in the area the painting wasn\'t strong. I didn\'t mind but felt victimised that I had worked hard to raise my game and had developed myself to a level that others in the area didn\'t.
This meant I never got a chance to win any prizes. Sucked really especially when the prizes including mega paint sets and the like.I then fell out with the hobby for a long while.
I feel it\'s unfair to ban anyone from comps except people who work in the studios holding the comp.
Wether or not people earn a lot of money painting minis doesn\'t matter. A competition is exactly that. You don\'t see Football leagues saying sorry guys you can\'t enter this year because you won last year your obviously too good.
There isn\'t anything in painting that is impossible to achieve. Every artist who is at the highest level didn\'t enter the world brush in hand and paint Surface reflective NMM . They all did finger painting as kids it\'s just they then worked harder at something and learned the techniques to add increasing realism to their minis.

Losers who whinge are a waste of space I too am looking forward to entering GD. A placing would be dreamland a final cut would be special.But simply being there and soaking the atmosphere in and seeing some of the best models in the world will be the best feeling on the day.

the crows nest is a place designed by PP to keep all the whinging out of the real forum areas. and since it has been implimented everything from WarMachine plastic bases to the price of eggs has been whinged about in that area.

saying the Privateer boards are filled with whiney GW types may be correct when talking about this particular forum area but that in itself keeps it out of the main site.

if you don\'t like whining stay out of the crows nest it\'s that simple. stay in the other areas and you\'ll see that it\'s not all like that one area.

i\'d ask for an apology for PP for badmouthing the entire forum beowulf, but since you have posted repeatedly in the crows nest you obviously know about it and it\'s purpose but would rather highlight this rubbish and blame them for it.
