Gallery posting etiquette?

This may seem like a bit of a silly question, but I\'m the type of person who likes to do things right and follow the rules, both written and unwritten; after all, without rules, the game means nothing.

I\'m working on some minis right now and once they\'re done, I\'ll be posting them. However, there are five of them and since they are part of a group, I\'m wondering which way I should go about posting them.

I\'m only asking because I\'ve seen two ways of doing this and I\'m just not sure what the proper etiquette is in this case. I would want to include various shots of each one, but that could make for a fairly large photo. Of course, I could just make it a front and back shot of the group.

So, should I post them as a group or individually? Which way is generally considering the \"right\" or \"proper\" way?

I\'d definitely want to display them as a group, so that means a group shot. Unfortunately, group shots don\'t really let you display the individuals. That\'s why, for a small group, each significantly different from the other, I\'d do both. A group shot, and then each individual on its own.

It would probably be \'improper\' to do so for 5 space marines that differ only in pose. It might also be improper for a unit of 10 minis, each different to each other, like a Necromunda gang. I\'d perhaps post the three or four best, and the group shot.

I don\'t think there\'s a right, or proper, way. Just do what you believe is reasonable.

I would post the group, front and back in one post, then pick the best one and post him alone.

I did this with my Dead Head High Elf Spearmen.

oh, and my individual didn\'t score as well as the group, in case you are concerned about your ranking.

I might have a different take from the rest of the group, not really into the group war gaming as much, but this is, after all Cool mini or not; it’s all about the minis; each mini with its own five seconds of fame or infamy.

What gets my goat is the 15 different pages of the same mini. If someone has taken the time to paint 10 different minis then why not post all ten of them individually; each one was lovingly painted were they not? Yes posting a group photo and individual shots is a duplication of sorts but since each image is being duplicated by a factor of 10% in this case it is significantly different from the one who posts the same mini alone multiple times.

It really does sound completely fair to me. The group photo shows the commonality, the individual photos show the details that were given each mini.

I agree with what Tzor said. Having rated over 32K minis on here, what I hate is when I get a bunch of pics of the same mini all as separate entries. Tall combined pics are so much better. Now a bunch of individual shots of a unit I have no problem with.

I guess maybe it if was \'just another marine 2\' or something it may get annoying, but there is that nice arrow button where I can just skip it.

I\'m with Tzor. If they\'re all different then do each one individually and then a group. Maybe post the group first, and then on the individuals you can set up a link for the group shot? That way you can get some good detail photos of each mini. But, if they\'re all the same except for pose, then definately just one entry.

Thanks for the replies. It\'s not so much that I\'m concerned with my ranking (it\'s not all that great anyway); my work stands or falls on its own merit - or lack thereof. If it does well, then I must have done something right; if it doesn\'t do well, then I did something wrong and hopefully people have been kind enough to point out what.

I was thinking about posting a group shot and then maybe 1 or 2 of the better ones individually. I just didn\'t want to do that and then be ostracized because I violated some unwritten rule. Always better to ask.

i hates people who post every member of their peasant archer unit. i don\'t want to see every little guy, i just don\'t.

to me squad members have a shared soul. you can post the lot of them in one photo or you can just pick the one you like best.

there are too many minis on this site for sane people to vote on as it is, i like to vote on what people think is their current best work they have to show. thats the point of this show after all. to help people paint better. how does posting a mini you can easily re-do with another 3 points extra to the score help anyone?

the photo size limits can easily handle having a group shot with one or two singles highlighted in the one photo. some photoediting is a good skill to have, try it.

First off, be prepaired. I did a perfect mini that should have scored an 11 on its own. Then I took a pic of it and posted it on my screen to look at. Somewhere in the process of getting the pic to my computer, someone switched my perfect mini with one painted by a 4 year old with crayons. Swear it.

The only mini pic posting that I find objectionable is when someone posts multiple posts of the same mini at 15 degree incriments all around the mini. Combine them in a long strip and then I can see all the wonderful angles.

Tips, pay attention to the size limit (200k?) and the max pixel width (don\'t use it, back off a bit). I like to use p-shop to adjust the lighting and contrast, crop away the excess background and maximize the .jpg compression to fit the file size limit.

it really depends..
but ill sometimes post group shots if it adds to the feel of the mini. to help pick out details i often add a side or bottom bar with a series of detail shots to point out my favorite bits, or sowcase blending or some other technique that ca often go unseen in a large photo.
i suppose the number of minis is important too - how many?

5 seems reasonable. the overview would have decent detail and you\'d still have room for some close ups. ill link a few of my group shots to give you an idea of what i do.

The biggest \"spoken\" but not listened to \"rule\" is multiple shots of the same ,whatever(group or single).

I feel that one shot to combine all angles is better.
If the individual minis are important and a source of pride go for the individual shot .

Seems the temptation of a high scoring mini to be the star of ones gallery is overwhelming for some,even the master painters.
I feel it is annoying and I stopped voting on these mini gallery\'s, because the annoyance caused me to knee jerk react and vote lower.

Technically there isn\'t really an ettiquette.
However a single vertical arranged collage of a single figure (i.e North South East & West pictures) always looks better that 5 separate pictures of the same mini.

If you want to do a Collage of the whole unit, there\'s nothing to stop you except the image size restirictions.

Besides if there is a problem Supervike, Finn or myself usually point it out to the person posting the pictures.

I have no problem with a seperate pic for each figure, but please combine pictures of the same mini. I would personally post a picture of the whole squad, then closeups of all the members in case anyone wanted a closer look.

I definitely make sure that when I submit a mini to the gallery that it\'s a composite shot. Multiple submission angles - submitting multiple pictures that are just different angle shots of the same mini - is a pet peeve of mine. Maybe it\'s just me (although I doubt it), but when I\'m going through the gallery, I\'ll vote on a mini with only a front view and then run into the back or side view of the same one. That annoys me. When I see that, I just click the arrow to move on.

That and when I see the title \"Another mini\".

Or all of the multiple submissions have the \"Another mini\" title. :cussing:

If I can make the size restrictions, I\'ll try Jake\'s idea. If not, I definitely think I\'ll do a front and back shot of the group and then put a picture or two of whichever one I like best below those; make it all one picture. I should be able to meet the size restrictions.

Etiquette is the art of making other people comfortable.
Thus there is always an etiquette.
Try to think about whether you think others would be unduly bothered.
If you do decide to post one of each member, I\'d suggest not posting them the same day, as voters running through a string will keep hitting what may look to them like the same fig.

I try and do this;

Give your mini a name/title
Get the photo in focus, and at a range where people can see the details.
Aim for a neutral background as it does not distract the attention.
If you need multiple shots of the mini, put themon the same entry, not separate ones. Help is available on the forums, re; photo setup.
If theres more than one mini and there, well painted or individual, post separately. But not on the same day, good thinking vincegamer
Hope this helps, its difficult to get all this info, especially when new, but its worth the effort and we all had to learn it. Good luck
