 :bouncy:
It was not intentional, but now we see how ironic life gets :p

He describes himself in his auctions
(...) as

\"PAINTER OF FANTASY AND HISTORICAL FIGS 20 YEARS PAINTING AND MULTIBLE AWARDS 4 TIME DAEMON WINNER ,22 TIME BEST ARMY\"

Excellent. Now I am impressed! ;)

What, he purchased and entered the best army on 22 occasions? Blimey!

And sorry if I seemed to be knocking the quality of Jeff\'s work, it\'s just that I was expecting another step up from Angela\'s work. Can\'t fault him though - he\'s clearly a serial winner lol

To be fair to Jeff, the model looks much better in person, and any model\'s flaws are visable when it is magnified many times.

That being said, I was suprised that this model won. I had expected Jeff Wilson to win, but for his amazing wardancers, not for his single entry.

I have to agree with you Ardyer, when I heard them announce Jeff\'s name for the slayer, I assumed it was for the Wardancers, not for the single....I was battling with my camera and missed the statement about which mini it was that won.... I\'m really surprised...I thought Angela\'s slan or her chaplain were both better painted than Jeff\'s . Guess that\'s why I\'m not a judge....

I wasn\'t there obviously, and though the wood elf is likely better than I could do (or I would go to these Demons), Angela\'s Slaanesh dude easily kicks it\'s butt. The sheer amount of painted detail is fantastic... and it is converted too of course.

Maybe I am biased a little though, because I have seen the Slaanesh guy...

Unfortunately, the photo here doesn\'t do the mini justice (sorry Steve :( ). Even Angela thought Jeff would win, although possibly for the Wardancers.

Sometimes I wish the pictures weren\'t taken so close up because it looks like there are flaws when there really aren\'t. These are the kinds ofthintgs that only magnification shows.

Of course, when you see them all together you just want to cry because you realize how far you are from this level. Some of these pieces were just amazing.

[Sarcasm Alert!]
And Hey! If you want to ask a judge what advice they have that may help you get over that hump between your painting level and that of the winners, just remember what they will tell you....Thin Your Paint!.... yeah...that\'s what I was missing! :p :p :D

ok...back to work...then I\'m headed home later to glob on some more paint.

You know the photo issue has long been a bone of contention with me. The official coverage always has terrible pictures. I remember someone saying once that they are only 256 color images as well...

I didn\'t mean that the winning piece wasn\'t painted well, butthat picture definately doesn\'t help.

Well, the photo thing...look at it this way:

Open a newspaper and look at a photo. Then look at the same photo 3 inches form your face. Looks much worse, doesn\'t it? It\'s because our eyes do exactly what the Impressionist painters wanted them to do...they merge the colors and forms of the tiny dots together into something that our brain understands: a total image, not a complex creation of millions of pixels. That\'s why when you blow up digital photos (and even film, depending on how big the grain of the emulsion is) they tend to look \"digitized\" or interpolated. When you blow up a digital image too big, sometimes the computer has to fill in the information to make the size of the image larger. And since it has nothing to go on, t looks at the pixels around it and kinda \"guesses\".

But also think of this: Most times when you see images on the web, they HAVE to be shrunk down to be a certain pixel size. They cannot be 300dpi and CMYK and 14.1 Megapixels like they are originally shot in my camera. And when you wanna make the image as large as you can without blowing up everyone\'s CPU, you want to crop down the image to just be the model. Good idea, actually! But what happens is that the models then tend to be larger than life size (and missing a lot of pixel info), i.e., a 1.5 inch tall model is now a 6 inch tall image on your screen. So then ANY brush stroke, dried paint glob, or even speck of white dust (from the stupid white convention hall tablecloths we shoot on) is ALSO magnified by 400%.

i\'m certainly not saying i\'m the best photographer on the planet, by ANY stretch of the imagination. What i am saying is that a model is NEVER represented as well in digital imagery than when you hold it in your palm. To REALLY and TRULY see why a particular model wins in Golden Demon, you really have to handle the model in your own hands.

Most of the Golden Demon coverage is in .gif format, it\'s completely retarded. Sure there\'s no compression, but you have almost no color depth to speak of and the filesizes are often larger than a comparable jpeg of high quality anyway. It makes no sense at all since they have to take the files from the camera and convert them to .gif format... extra work for worse product.

*shrugs*

Not much can be done about it, the WD coverage is usually better. Anyway, congrats to the winners, there\'s definitely some tasty stuff in the coverage I\'ve seen. It would be great to see a few studio level photos of the entries... Jeff Wilson doesn\'t have an account on here does he?

Special congrats to Angela on the wins as well... some beautiful entries and I can certainly excuse the lack of updates lately if you were working on Demon entries :D

Anyway if I ever make it to the GD I so plan on entering my entire Wood Elf army for the Open Category... well maybe minus one or two individual models entered. I plan on gaming with them all, but some are getting as much attention as my old contest work used to, and I\'m really liking the results.

We shall see though... if I get my own place this summer it pretty much rules out any form of travel for the rest of my university life (6 years).

Dan hit the nail on the head. It isn\'t the photography (no offense intended there as I am insanely jealous of your job) but the format. The results of hours of tiring blending are lost when you reduce the color depth like that. That is what my complaint is :)

i agree with that, actually. It actually bugs me, too, sometimes... ;) But you shouldn\'t be jealous of my job...you haven\'t seen my paycheck...! :(

lol

In any case, film is always better at capturing subtle color depth like that than digital. Digital\'s close, but not quite there yet.

Well that is a JPEG picture. But changing it to GIF does not affect the blending work. It just changes each pixel to fit within the frame of 256 colours.. and you don\'t see any pixels on this picture. So if you take a perfect transition it will still look perfect as you didn\'t take the initial picture in the GIF format. But of course if you look close it will be a big difference as it vill be speckled.

The reason this looks like it does is because it\'s a very good picture, with excellent sharpness. It shows all flaws visible if you\'d view the mini up close.. which most cmon photos don\'t. I do however think they have tuned up the sharpness just a tiny too much.. it isn\'t very forgiving and pleasing to the eye to view such a sharp photograph. And IRL those flaws are not as \"dominating\" as on photo. Specially under normal lighting conditions.

So while the photo is indeed a good picture, it is not very good presentation-wise.

Hello all. I just recieved confirmation that the wood elfs were painted by Piotr at Micrart Studios. I have forwarded their email to a white dwarf staffer, and now hopefully, justice can be done :)

My question is now, should someone contact ebay about this?

i couldn\'t have said it better myself. And, in fact, didn\'t. lol Thanks for that, Avelorn!

:D no prob.

oh. and note that I edited the initial post to \"dominating\" instead of visible on the last line. the flaws are often visible IRL with careful viewing, but they tend to blend into the mini more, especially if the piece has good composition. :)

If GW confirms this, I wonder if this means a final cut piece takes the place of the elves. This whole thing is troublesome, but at least he\'s not getting away with it.

Someone had mentioned the idea of requiring WIP shots at the Golden Demons. I think this is a bad idea, as it would actually discourage people from entering and -- despite how photo-centric the miniature and gaming community has become -- not everyone is going to have a camera. Plus someone who\'s determined to enter work that isn\'t their own can just put some similar parts down, base coat a few in close colours, and claim it\'s a WIP of the already finished piece. For the vast majority of folks -- who are not cheaters -- WIP shots would just be too much red tape and hassle, not enough practical prevention.

Personally, I think an active and alert online community noticing this sort of thing is working exceptionally well. :)

I personally think the piece looks poor because it\'s very badly lit

Dudes and dudettes------

Is this cheater-guy from Gainesville, GA? If that\'s the case, I know his face, and I know where to find him. I also know there is another local contest here next Saturday that he will most likely enter-----
At which I may just have to stop by and let the judges know.

I was tellin\' Darin that I saw a guy carryin around a trophy---and I\'ve seen *his* paint up close at one of the LGSs here----no way.

I feel sorry for this bastard if he\'s who I think he is. I know all the local stores he competes at------I\'ll have him banned there too.

Just let me know if we find out where\'s he from---it just looked like his ebay stuff said it was in Gainesville, GA.

He used the name Andy Savage, but I don\'t know where he was from. However his auctions do same he is from Gainesville, GA.

EDIT: HA, this dude pissed off a friend of mine at the event when he wouldnt shut up about the judges. My buddy was more than willing to recount his conversation in which he said something about being from Gainsville. Rodnick, I guess you do know him :)
