But I thought the judges did a fine job---and, I didn\'t win anything.:)

I second that, including the not winning part!

I am so glad I\'m not a judge. This was a very hard competition. When it comes down to it, I think they did fine and I don\'t think marketing comes into it.

I couldn\'t imagine having to put those two models side by side and choose between them. I think they were both painted incredibly well. At that point, the conversion level probably does take one above the other.

Judging can be fickle at times, but it\'s not usually off to a point of being blatant bias.

Me, I\'ll just wait for next year and work harder this time.

Hey... the only difference between me and the winners is about 50 more hours per mini.....and talent....yep, need some of that too. lol lol lol

Ok, now after the \"bash the golden demons\" thread is moving along nicely, lets talk about what happened at GD atlanta and why (at least i believe) Jeff wilson got the sword with his Warhammer single and not SaxonAngel for her Chappy.

Ok, I haven\'t read this thread thoroughly, but skimmed over most of everything about why the Elf beat out the Chappy.

Personally, my first thought was that if it came down between the two, the GW judges picked the Elf because that\'s thier big \"thing\" they\'re selling now. They want to move their new wood elves off the shelves, why not have a sword winner be an Elf entry? Hasn\'t anybody considered product-pushing may be a factor? This IS GW judging, after all.

Just my thoughts on the matter..... I could be wrong.

:)

Nope I don\'t beleave that one bit.. Because Space marines are big for them too. Their number one selling item. Black Templars are just as new as Woodelves. Im fact that figure is really new release itself. If they were looking to bring attention to a new release they would of picked a Dwarf or better yet a Tau figure to win the sword since Tau are the next new thing.

Its simple.. Having judged the Gen Con Painting contest 3 times.. they the judges picked what they felt was the best figure that day that hour..nothing more nothing less.. and as per typical of painting contests.. its going to be second guessed for weeks and months to follow.. its over and done..LA is next..move along to the next show :D

You know, my first thought was that of duende\'s, that the pick was made based on the race. But i was talking to my buddy tim about it and he was pointing out the absolute strangness of the pick, for one if they where pushing product they would have picked something that was a little more \"out of the box\" insted of a big old conversion.
Still i do believe the fact that the wood elf was a race being promoted at the moment, and the fact that the conversion&paint looked very much like something one might see in a black gobo artical, did have something to do with the choice.

Maybe they wanted a winner that fans would see as an atainable goal.

OFF TOPIC:

Btw wth does the model have a blue eel on the base?? im truely confused please explain?? or is that not an eel?? maybe a hairless gofer? if thats the case then whys it so blue? Maybe its winter?? if which case are the wooden jackalope antlers ever greens??? i thought it was only pines and needly plants that are ever green??? oh its just sooo confusing, its called into question all my former presumtions about the fauna and flora of WHF!???!!?

Looks like coverage is up on the GW site, and the cheater has been called out. No posting for the third place open....it has been dq\'d.

My god.......

The official coverage photos just make me want to cry.

I realise my stuff is nowhere near perfect. But...

Do our figures really look THAT bad??

Indeed, the GW coverage is up with only 2 winners in the Open Category.

The blue \'eel\' on the base is actually a spite, one of the small spirits in the trees that aid the Wood Elves.

As for what was chosen to win. I\'m sure there are a variety of factors, and here is one that I haven\'t seen mentioned yet, but I know is considered after conversations with both Dave Taylor and John Schaffer, and other judges, and that\'s the mysterious \"Fitting into its respective universe\". This does bring MUCH more subjectivity into it, and could even bring the GW promoting its product line as well, but it is considered. I was there, and saw both models, and would really call it a tie, even though GW can\'t. And to go again to promoting its product, Space Marines often pop up as winners for a reason :D

in my humble opinion saxonangel\'s space marine is a thousand times better than jeff\'s, i know its great conversion, but if the paintjob is \"bad\", then the mini is \"bad\" (or not too good, i\'m not saying jeff\'s is bad, but it could be much better and SHOULD be much better for a sword winning entry), and same happens with great paintjobs on horrible conversions... it is much better to keep a miniature original without sculpting before than making it worse with the conversion... and evendough jeff\'s conversion work is pretty great the paintjob definitely doesnt help, with all the thick blacklining and all... saxon\'s is much betterly painted. i love the wardancers though, maybe he should still have won, but with this other entry. Finally, maybe the pic doesnt help but i wouldnt attribute all the fault to this... anyway, congrats to all the winners once more and hope to see you all keep entering! :D

Amen, thats my feeling exactly. You hit the nail right on the head especial when you said,
\"but it could be much better and SHOULD be much better for a sword winning entry\"

Im suprised more people havent been saying the same thing.

I generally try to stay out of this kind of thing because they tend to go absolutely nowhere, and arguing on the internet is stupid, but seriously everyone, the judges picked what they thought was the best miniature. I can\'t really make a call on whether or not Wilson\'s was better than SaxonAngel\'s or not, because I didn\'t hold them both in my hands...and that\'s the medium on which they\'re judged. There must have been SOMETHING about the 40k single winner that they didn\'t like, or just as equally, something about Jeff Wilson\'s piece that they absolutely loved. Whether or not it\'s \"sword quality\" has nothing to do with how it ranks up against the winners in the UK, French, whatever GDs, it\'s about being the best model that very day, that hour.

There have been times when I disagreed with the judges on how they placed certain categories...but it\'s a painting competition that\'s judged by an outside group of people who (generally) have a lot of experience with the judging process. There\'s no conspiracy, GW is not evil, a tree falling in the forest makes a sound if you\'re not around to hear it. So yes...let\'s move on and think about LA, France, and whatever else is coming up.

Wow, you\'re really pretty Angela!! :)

On another note, I wish we got the little plaques on the front of our demons in Australia.

@CromBad - Mate, you\'re right, but you\'re also very wrong :D There are more decent painters on this site than in any GW store or even offices. We are seeing the White Dwarf/GW images of the shots and as such we are comparing them on a level playing field. There are people here who are super-qualified to comment, and if the general consensus from what we\'ve seen is that Angela\'s is better, then I\'m sure it is better. But as I say, it\'s down to the judges, although I\'m not getting caught out by any Emperor\'s New Clothes scam :)

I\'d love to se these in person because I reckon it\'d be the same result in my mind as what the majority here are saying. It looks ROPEY!

Still, nice to hear a new voice in the forums and I hope you\'re going to be here for a while to come :D

Personally, my pain and suffering throughout this entire ordeal has been immeasurable. Intense AND immeasurable. And itchy.

If I was forced to put a price tag on all this horrid suffering, without regard to the coincidental cost of a carnifex body sprue, I guess I could say $22.50 US. Or a carnifex body sprue.

You hear me, Dirty Steve? Isn\'t our deep pain and suffering worth a measley wittle carnifex body sprue? Carnifexes... er... carnifecis... carnifi for all! Viva la revolution!

:D

I did get to see both of these minis up close and personal...they were both amazing and I\'m glad that it was the judges who had to make a decision and not me.

That being said, had I been a judge I would have voted for Angela\'s.... :)

There were a couple of categories that I really disagreed with the judges choices, but that was their decision to make and not mine. We each have our own preferences and biases...thats life...now as someone said above, lets move on and focus on whats coming next!!!

Cheers,

I\'ve always heard this was the case.

I have to admit when looking at Angela\'s work, my first initial reaction was \"uggh..Space Marine\", then I really looked at it and saw that it was beautiful.
Jeff\'s Wood Elf on the other hand, initially kind of jumps out at you with it\'s \"wow\" factor, then you look at the paintjob itself.

So I like both of them, but in saying that if Angela had painted any other mini than a damned old boring Space Marine, I think she would have easily won.

I agree

Dave, I agree entirely with what you say. It does have something to do with model choice and making the model want you to look deeper. Between the model and conversion it caught my eye before Angela\'s, however once I noticed Angela\'s I was really taken aback. By the way, the Abadon that took second place in 40k looks a little odd to me the way it changed color in person. Is this a painting trick or was this model dipped?
