Ah, but is she of a geeky persuasion? It\'s perfectly forgivable, nay, expected that \"normals\" have not heard of any of those, but another nerd? Now that\'s weird! /broadbrush generalisation

My local store is pretty much the stereotypical store, filled with 12 year olds shrieking about 2D6+3 attacks on a super daemon wizard at the top of their lungs. Whilst of course 20 of them cram around the same gaming table. Even one of the employees is tediously excited about everything and has matted greasy hair, they let slip employee hygiene it seems lol

GW needs to sort out it\'s public image. They need to overcome the irritating experience of trying to wade through the crowds to look at the abysmal 3 rows of blisters (only to find that the model you are after is direct only). Then you have to agree to everything an employee talks about in the vain hope that the conversation goes a little quicker. I have mentioned a few times that I won\'t be going to either gamesday or subscribing to white dwarf because the prices are terrible. If they can make shopping in a store more enjoyable then I would most likely go there more often and purchase more.

My tips on how to avoid inane conversation at GW stores (particularly from redshirts you have seen several times before who haver been alive less time than you have been complaining about price rises).

1. When they ask a question eg. What game do you play? - don\'t volunteer information and keep the answer as brief as possible, a monosyllabic grunt works well.

2. At all costs avoid eye contact. Turn side on to examine the product. Pick up a blister pack and make it clear you aren\'t there to talk.

3. Maintain the discipline. The moment you let them in you are in a conversation you didn\'t necessarily want.

This technique is best used on the red shirts you have seen before who commence the conversation in exactly the same way as they did on the previous occasion.

If a red shirt commences a conversation which isn\'t scripted by GW HQ they are normally good sources of information and a discussion might be interesting and helpful.

And paintingploddy you could always just turn around and say can you please stop harrassing me the staff member will know then instead of trying to ignore him as it wont work all the time just for the fact some are really persistant.

I will never buy from any of the local GW stores.
My Local -INDEPENDENT- store orders anything I want and passes the retailer discount to me.

But that was before I found, um....

Warmachine/Hordes
Anima Tactics
Confrontation
Zombie attack
Etc......
Etc......

plus, it\'s so hard to find time for a game, and then when you finally get the rules down, it\'s time for the next edition...
I\'ve BEEN fed up, but I still buy - not enough to play, but they still pop out some good pieces now and then, and their amalgamation of all the sci-fi geeky staples that is 40k is just a really good read!

So anyway.
I hate them, and yet can\'t drop them like they deserve.

.........I was left wondering how much use the GW walk-in stores actually are to people.
For GW primary target (12-16 year Olds with limited patience) they are fine.

As a social gathering gaming place, provided the manager is an understanding gamer/hobbyist and not a Uber sales freak, the atmosphere is good.
However Heulwen, you have to remember that the average female who walks into a GW store is either the mother, sister, aunt or Grandmother of a teenager. Not an attractive young woman in her 20\'s who\'s a modeller and painter.
So when a Blue shirt does leap towards you, its partially out of delight and partially out of testosterone. lol

I\'m 16... I would say in my GW the age is about 12-14 then everyone who is unemployed over the age of 18 lol...

Strigoi (sp) who started the p3 thread works at my local store (and will no doubt appear here..lol)

Mate... im 14 myself (very close to 15) and have never felt welcome to walk into a GW shop because the crowd is so..... annoying.

Since i\'m a painter, not a gamer I tend to go now more towards other brands of models other than the GW ones and get what I want. Also i prefer to go to another shop now that does have wargaming there but you don\'t get the usual \"harassment\".

Anyway, the price rises do suck so that means I will be steering more clear from GW more than ever.

Cheers,
Daniel:)

One of the main points I learned when I worked at GW was that regardless of the type of answers and body language of the customers that come into the store the sales person is suppose to \"establish a rapport\". It is one of the 10 GW commandments when speaking to customers, third commandment I think. No matter how uninterested a customer is in the game, store, or talking to the employees you have to talk to them and get them to open up so that you can find what they like so that you can push more of that product at them so they buy it. All else fails sell them a magazine.

I enjoy going to my GW, but then again, I\'m male, have an army for each system (except LoTR and WoTR) and have been going down there for 6 years so I know all the regulars. *shrugs* You have to talk to people to be accepted really, and be prepared for lewd+crude jokes.

I think GW tends to be its own worst enemy when it comes to communicating what there intentions are and as a hobby community ours is an insular, weird and paranoid one.

Yes GW has raised there prices OMG how dare they, no other company does that? I remember paying 50p for a 500ml bottle of coke when they first came out roughly same time as the current WFB orc boy regiment, at the time £15. Coke now £1.20 from my average local high street store, orc boys now £18 one has gone up 140%, the coke the boys 20% over the same time period.

People get annoyed because its there hobby which we all feel very protective of.

As they bring out products in plastic they get cheaper, steamtank by £5 greatswords by£2 for equivalent number. Those were the worst examples everything else came down lots.

They also are now putting more into there battleforces as they get renewed saving a greater % and more into there core games increasing there value. They only went back up in the price rise to a value they have been before.

As for where the increased revenue goes I assure you its not to the staff, benefits in kind have been reduced, worst salary in the retail sector and a pay freeze this year across the board.

So where is all the money going? Its paying back the loans it took out in the past at an accelerated rate to remove the financial burden and improve the security and health of the business.

The reason for the loans, to pay for the cost cutting and restructuring plan needed after cocking up the global expansion on the back of the LOTR bubble. A bad business decision not a bad hobby decision. Reduced availability of lines in store, if you have less stock you can have smaller premises needing less staff reducing overheads. This year they just had there second round of staff cuts.

Removal of ebay sellers. GW is giving there top discount as stockists to those with brick and mortar stores that offer painting and gaming facilities. Thats were that discount is going. ATM it seems as a company they are mostly trying to slimline there retail outlets and associated costs but increase there market exposure by having friendly indies that have gaming activities run in a positive light. So reducing costs and creating good hobby enviroments, well that makes good sense for the future of the company and with an aim to have smaller more gradual price rises in future once stabilised and to try and reduce the cost of hobby consumeables, theyre having a look again at paints sprays, glue etc.

Now as for the store staff, a big problem is poor training, poor staff retention, poor store managers and also controversially some hobbyists offensive preconceptions and down right rudeness.

Poor staff retention is easy to explain - poor salary, benefits actively withdrawn, poor reward and constantly increased targets and therefore pressure. The most galling thing is seeing good staff leave because they cannot afford to set up a home or family on the wage.

poor training - the way poorly trained staff converse with and treat customers is what generates poor corporate image. This is caused by poor managers.

Poor managers - Some stores are afflicted with managers who unfortunately do not see the hobby community or the good of the company. Some see it as there day care centre were they play toy soldiers and get paid for doing nothing. These managers exist and only care about the motivation, well being and training of the staff when there jobs are threatened. This is wrong staff should always be trained to the highest level and there wellbeing monitored, if you dont store atmosphere sucks. Been there, seen it, got the t-shirt.

Now onto the \"customers\" - The well trained staff in GW are there to help you and improve your hobby by the time you have left the store. This could be selling you something, it could be painting advice, discussing tactics or directions.

To do this they are given training in open questioning, this is designed to allow the customer to give us enough information to know what you want so we can fill that need.

If you are the rude customer who just chooses to grunt yes or no, or shout just browsing they will ask more questions as thats there job. Some people perceive this as pushy and annoying, these are the arrogant closed minded asses who assume we hate them and want to steal all there money.

If you simply give a quick polite answer letting us know that you just fancied checking to see if there were some new squats, or were tryin to remember what paint you needed it helps us now if you need help now or can be left to browse to your hearts content knowing that they can approach the friendly chap who has already broken the ice by exchanging a couple of words about your hobby.

I have lost count of the number of times people wont even return a polite good morning but will instead scowl and look like you just desecrated there ancestors bones. A lot of the time we work alone and sometimes would just like to have a chat.

Making someone in the store aware of you also helps put off potential shoplifters.

I\'ve definately written enough and the people on here who know me, know that im not an evil person even though I work for GW and intelligent enough to make up my own mind when I have seen more information than the customers are ever made aware of. There are lots of things afoot and interesting times ahead.

GW as a company arent evil, they are geeks poor at communication and bad at confronting people who are harmful to us. Just like there customers.

Bites tongue. lol

Mick, What you have written is accurate, but there will always be people who don\'t want to see/know \"The Bigger Picture\".
GW\'s primary investment groups are struggling and putting pressure for better returns.

The thing is, it is pushy and annoying. One of the reasons I don\'t particularly enjoy going into GW is because of the barrage of questions as soon as I walk in the door, making me feel like I have to justify myself, my reasons for visiting the store and my choice of hobby (and I do try to be polite - my parents dragged me up proper). I\'m a (reasonably) intelligent adult and it irritates me. Whatever happened to tailoring the approach to the customer? You\'ve admitted that the poor staffing conditions do create problems and clearly not all GW stores (or staff) are the same. In turn, while I agree that some modellers have a bad reputation for very good reasons (and thereby give the rest of us a bad name - we\'re annoyed about it too), it\'s quite hypocritical to tar every hobbyist who walks through your doors with the same brush.

Funny how I have no issues about giving a nod and a smile to the proprietors of the indie stores I visit. If I did that in GW, next thing I know I\'d be fending off three people all trying to sell me something........ /jk... sorta...

Honestly, I know of no other company who pushes this hard on the customer interaction front. Yes, it is good to be acknowledged when you walk into a shop and it\'s nice to know that there\'s someone knowledgeable there to answer questions, but I think in some GW stores it\'s gone too far and become intrusive.

I dont think it helps that a lot of pension type firms use GW stocks as part of there portfolios, steady as GW are financial groups need big returns at the moment which is not what they are going to get from GW no matter how much pressure there is.

And yes DR we all know I am in fact evil  its just that mine is the nice, kind, happy variety of evil.

@Amazon warrior yes it definately has been taken too far in many stores and depressingly try as i might to alter this from within and to good effect i get told that im getting good results but the wrong way. ??? The real problem with GW lies in middle management, communication and there human resources attitude.

If you ever pop into my store and im working you\'ll find the kind of pleasant welcome people want, if its one of the other guys well perhaps not lol

EDIT: lol yes I reserve the right to be hypocritical im english dammit lol

Ah, middle management. For when it doesn\'t matter about the results you get, only that you do it THEIR way. If we could conspire to push them all into the Thames, it\'d be a great blow for the freedom of mankind. Terrible for the environment, mind. I\'d love to come to your store some day and enjoy the experience. Hell, I might even buy something! ;)lol:beer:

That sums up the reason I hate the GW store \"experience\". That may be the rules, but it\'s a terrible one-sided \"rapport\" that consists of them nattering inanely to a person who is obviously trying to ignore them/escape.

Fortunately, most of their product is not worth going into a store for anyway, so I never have to deal with it again.
