I flew all the way from Sacramento, CA. But the in laws live up near Kennesaw so we have an excuse to make the trip and bring the kids to see their grandparents. And I did go to Tech and lived downtown for seven years then, so I\'ve got a soft spot for Atlanta.

Sorry I didn\'t really meet anyone, bit of a lurker and introverted. Got gold in 40K squad with my inquisitor band and bronze in LOTR single with the cave troll, and made first cut with 4 of my other 5 entries. So it was worth the trip I guess. If anyone goes to GDLA, maybe I\'ll see you there.

Jeff,

Your squad was awesome. Congratulations on the win!

I wish you had introduced yourself. I\'m a Tech grad as well...never managed to escape Atlanta. :)

Hope to get to meet you next year!

Cheers,
Grumb

Thanks Grumb.
What year did you get out? I\'m AE\'96, MSAE\'97, + a couple more on a failed PhD attempt.
I\'ll likely be back again next, I\'ve got a winning streak to maintain in Atlanta (3/3).

Around the age of 15-16 I would say I was a reasonably talented painter, and that was without the benefit of sites like CMON etc to help learn. So I think it\'s quite possible for the youngbloods winners to actually have painted their own models :)

Legally you can\'t enter a model on behalf of someone else (someone asked that question earlier).

You are definitely a tech grad....you didn\'t ask when I graduated...you asked when I \"got out\"... lol

I \"got out\" in 93 (IM)...should have graduated in 87, but a car accident put me out for almost 2 years, when I went back I changed majors (twice) and went part time...graduated with 3 months to spare before the 10 year rule kicked in....cut it a little too close for comfort...;)

Look forward to seeing you back!

Cheers,
Grumb.

Hiya!

Wow! what a whirlwind 48 hours!

First off: I loved meeting all of you. I\'m normally a horribly shy person but folks like Keith, Grumb, and especially RedDawn managed to get me into talking and laughing it up.

Everyone had a great time after the GD at Dawn and Grumb\'s place. We all gorged on Ribs (my husband is still talking about them), brownies, snacks, pop and beer.
They went all out and showed us the definition of Southern Hospitality. AMAZING!

Thank you so very much for the wonderful memories, food and fun. I honestly can\'t say thank you enough. Hopefully you can get some rest now.

We had a great time laughing at Keith\'s stories and comic antics (the man is insane!), and everyone else too had a few funny tales to share and the gossip flowed freely.

All in all, I had a blast at the GD and after. :flip:

I\'m too tired right now to comment on some of the negative aspects of the GD that have been brought up, except to say it\'s a damned shame it happened.

Once again I missed most of the folks from CMON. I was there all day and managed to meet and congratulate Angela briefly. Other than that I didn\'t catch any one else. I am so bad with names that I didn\'t realize which folks were posters here. I was happy to win a silver in LOTR Large. My second Demon! Yay!.
About the Youngblood stuff. Only one of my sons was able to go; my 7 year old. He enetered an Uruk-hai that he painted himself. He didn\'t even make first cut but he was really amped just seeing his work in the case with the others. He thought the winners did good work and wasn\'t upset at all. He was there to have fun and compete and it was great for us both.

sounds like a good time was had by all (most anyway).

hmmm ribs. One of the major food groups in the south. Next year Scott, I\'ll come help you work the smoker.

Honestly, I am glad we had not planned to come this year, we have a family crisis to take care of here and would have had to back out at the last minute.

@RedSevenBlue, I\'ve been known to spend 10 hours on a mini before I\'ve even primed it. I know it seems to take forever to get anywhere with them, but to enter a competition at that level requres WAY above & beyond what you would normally do. I\'m not trying to discourage you, just let you know the level of commitment required. Lots of people are alreay working on next years mini and will be pressed for time to complete it. Hang in there, paint lots, try to improve with each mini. Post on the WIP thread, get a mentor.

Tight lines,
Kevin

Well, I think I\'m just going to have to make my BRIGHT lime green leather jacket the signature Games Day jacket - because you definitely can\'t miss it! lol

I\'d really hoped to get ALL CMONers in the pictures, but not doing so this year just gives me more determination to do it next year.

Well, we slept/lazed around most of the day yesterday and didn\'t have a chance to pull the pics off the camera. We\'re going to work on it tonight, and hopefully get them posted later this evening.

Dawn, I will look for the green jacket next year. I will also wear my CMON shirt to make myself an obvious target. Sory about the mix-up. I will have to remember to get on the forums and arrange a meet for us and the others.

I am sorry that we missed you as well! We could have used your help at the party, we have WAY too many ribs left over and I guess I\'m going to HAVE to eat the rest myself....I\'ll just have to suffer through it... lollollollol

It was a great get together afterwards, made special by all of you who attended. Dawn and I hope to do it again next year and make it bigger and better!!!

Cheers Folks,

Billy,

OK, I\'ve watched you rant for a bit now, and I think its time for a little love, but its called tough love.

You mentioned a few pages ago that you spent 10 hours on the mini that you\'d done for Games Day. I\'m going to say you spent 20 hours just to cover the basing and any final touches that you may have done before the competition. Quite honestly, many of us spend more time then that on minis that we\'re painting just for the gaming table.

I know several of the folks who were in the main competition that spent over 100 hours a piece on the entries that they entered. And several of them didn\'t win, a couple of them didn\'t make first cut even.

What I\'m trying to say here is don\'t rail against the judges and the unfairness of the competition. Like open voting here on CMON, its all subjectives. Sometimes you catch someone\'s eye and sometimes you don\'t. Spend your energy practicing, painting more, and getting better. Make an even better entry for next year and try again... ;)

Cheers,
Grumb

RedSevenBlue: I\'m sorry your figure didn\'t do well. The only solution is to push yourself harder and higher.

I won gold in 40k with a model that had 90 hours put into it, plus I got two silvers in other categories.. However I didn\'t place in Warhammer Fantasy squad/Large with a figure that topped 300+ hours of work. Sure I\'m a little disappointed, yeah... But only with myself. I\'m wondering what *I* did wrong and can do better with it in the future rather than accuse others of being blind or cheaters.:)

In a competition one of the first things a judge notices are the obvious flaws with a piece. So you best keep a sharp eye out for those stray specks of gold until you are right outside the GD hall doors. ;)

Now That I\'m Back

Well, now that I\'m back I can make a post, may be my first. I\'m a lurker on forums, but I\'m sure that people who met me this weekend have seen that I\'m far from quiet. I also said I\'d post more :p

First, I\'d like to send a huge thanks to Scott and Dawn for having us all to their home and feeding us great ribs, potato salad, and beverages. If the BBQ is yearly you can probably count me in!

Next, a hearty congratulations to the all the winners from CMON! We were, as I recall, fairly well represented in each category. I especially liked Angela\'s and Darin\'s 40K entries, and Jeff Freeman\'s 40K squad and Cave Troll *(he has a cave troll)*.

I would like to say it was a marvelous pleasure to meet all of you I had not met before, and those I have met. The party was a great time! Angela, I\'m not completely insane (yet) but I do like to make everyone feel comfortable :) And some days I\'m funnier than others, but I do get majorly hyped up for conventions. I\'m partially disappointed though because I didn\'t get Scott to shoot beer out of his nose this year lol I am glad that I made people laugh and if there was fun because of it, then great!

I\'ll be sure to throw everyone that I met there a mail so that I can get them my email, which I check with greater frequency. I\'ll also be sure to be here at CMON more often, because the people from here I\'ve met are great.

And next year and all other future conventions, I\'m easy to spot, because I\'ll be in a Hawaiian flowery colourful shirt with a baseball hat on. Easy to spot, really. :)

The demons

First off this was the first GD that I have ever attended and i had a blast the whole time. Most of the people i was attending with, were X-GW employees so i got to me up with a ton of the people who work the demons and such. It was great.

On the subject of the demons, There were some Amazing well painted minis and some very interesting entries.

@RedSevenBlue: I echo the advice others have given to you and I say you keep trying. There was one kid around my area that tried for two years to place and never did even though his painting skills were rather good for a kid his age. I sorry to tell you, it doesn\'t matter if your model was painted better than the placing models, but those models caught the judges eye and thats why they won. Its part of entering the golden demons, its not always the best models that win, its the interesting and eye catching ones that generally happen to be painted well, veruses winning just based on techincal painting merit.

I am also sorry i didn\'t get a chance to introduce myself, i think i caught glimpses of you guys at the awards ceremony, but thats when we were in our chaos star GW staff shirts so we were more interested in the faces the GW staffers were giving us :D.

Ill def. be going to the next GD either in Baltimore or Atlanta next year. Hope to see you guys.

Keith - we\'re definitely going to send you a GA Tech baseball cap to replace that *shudder* Univ. of GA cap you had on at GD. :D

@gt####c - I really hate it that I didn\'t say anything to you at the award ceremony. I KNEW your name was familiar and I kept asking the people I was sitting with \"He\'s on CMON, isn\'t he?\" Sooo, I\'m just as bad as the people who didn\'t come talk to me!
