the 2 + year, 600+ hour project ...the work of art that people discussed a year ago or so...

Hmm...if that didn\'t win the sword...something\'s probably wrong...

Nope the word is its only 2nd in 40K large.. that a fantasy Unit won the sword.

That\'s right. Only 2nd in 40K Large. I was pretty shocked at that. Thought it was hands down the best overall piece on display. That\'s where my wife and I heard the \"spirit of the game\" reasoning from the judges, meaning the first place winner would look more at home on a gaming table. Again, for a painting not gaming contest, that seems like flawed logic. Most folks at the show sure thought it was a for sure 1st as well as the Sword winner.

well that piece (victor hardy\'s) has a lot of history.

it\'s good to see he is competing again....any of the old school superstars take part aswell?

Well, all the pics are up and somewhat sorted into thier respective albums (see above). I apologize in advance for any sorting mistakes, as I\'d take some entry pics, go walk around taking random pics, come back to GD and take more. So I might have grouped a few entries in the wrong category.

Overall, I think they turned out pretty good, I lost count of how many times I cursed the damn Plexiglass and the overhead lights reflecting on it.

As for WHO won WHAT, I have no idea. The group I was with didn\'t win anything so after judging, we gathered our entries and left before the awards ceremony. Sorry!

Enjoy the pictures! The new Eldar just may make me start buying GW again....

:D

(do i get a prize for \"fastest from event to pics online\" award?) LOL

hmmm

i have seen pictures of that model and i must say...if it didn\'t win sword, whatever did had better be better than magmatrax, Jeremie\'s elephant, and UK land raider winner combined!!!!

\"Spirit of the game\" my a$$. GW judges are morons...at least in some places they use past sword winners as the main judges...

Thanks Duende for a lot of great pictures- and so quickly! I did look for you, but I didn\'t hang out a whole lot.

It was an odd day. Everyone pretty much figured Victor\'s piece had the sword. It was mind blowing, and once I heard his description of the piece I felt like it fit right in with the ethos of GW, but the judges did not and gave it a silver. I think it was pretty clearly the best piece there.

Having said that, the sword winning unit was a beastman unit that had a fantastic banner and great freehand details on the blades.

I took gold in 40k single and LoTR single. The 40k pic is blurry, but I\'ll get a good pic up soon.

An odd day- but I think everyone had a good time.

A newcomer Todd Swanson won a silver for fantasy and two golds, one in the open and the other for fantasy group along with the sword. Congrats to Todd, I hope if he doesn\'t belong here yet, he will soon. Zach Lanier took golds in 40k single and LOTR single. Scott Bowser won gold in 40K large beating Victor Hardy\'s Golgotha, which getting a close up view, deserves to be in the top 10 here ( for the last 7 years). It truly is amazing and is the DaVinci Code of miniatures. Ravage and Darkson could both do a whole book from this mini.

As for GW, I understand the delicate nature of their Intellectual Property, as they are a company that answers to share holders. ( I do feel that they should have placed it in open and given it gold, as for painting, it had no equals ) (( At the very least, they didn\'t disqualify it, Given the first amendment on this side of the pond, that would have been just a little hypocritical )

And as many of us say, Drink!

First, congrats to Zach- can\'t wait to see some good pictures. Secondly, whatever beat Victor\'s piece better be utterly incredible. I\'ve seen the model up close and I\'m not saying it\'s impossible that it didn\'t take the weapon, I\'m just saying there must have been some brilliant competition. Like I said, really looking forward to pictures.

Thanks Dave!

That\'s a great pic of the banner- very nice work. Todd was a nice guy- he certainly deserves it. I think victor was undone from the content, not the style or technique. I\'m sure much will be said later on, but Todd\'s unit was great and I can\'t wait to see some more closeups.

I\'ll be taking some pictures of my 2 entries tonight and hopefully getting them posted posthaste.

I\'m posting my entries at this moment too. Should be finished shortly.

I have a feeling that the competetion must have been extremely close- the banner and the skintones are just breathtaking!

I find it interesting that GW has picked their four sword winners so far (in North America, and France) that all showcase metallics very well. Maybe they are tired of all the NMM and SE-NMM pieces?

GW just put up some more pictures of the sword winner.

http://gamesday.us.games-workshop.com/GamesDay2006/Baltimore_2006/Coverage/goldendemons/slayer_page.htm

is it just me, or is this entry not a legal Warhammer unit? Beast herds need 10 models (5 gors and 5 ungors), or bestigors 10 models min. I only count 6...

Could this had been entered as a Morheim warband?

Yes you are correct 10 make a unit but they are usely not as strict as they could be as long as there are about 5 or more models becuse you could always say its for Morheim or necramonda for 40K.

hmmm

in terms of painting, from looking at pics, unless they are way off...i dont think compet was that close. nothing else there looks close to gulgotha in terms of painting...

as for metallics, it\'s common in europe for awesome metallic works... many tell me they prefer it cause of the realistic look.

Well if Mr. Lanier says the Beastmen were worthy, I believe him. I just hate to think that Mr. Hardy\'s piece might\'ve actually been better painted, but marginalized due to it\'s content and theme.

To maybe underscore the point, I just heard that Victor\'s model is being boycotted by the Vatican, Opus Dei and even Tom Cruise. So, obviously, there\'s a lot of pressure there.

more info...

ok, I\'ll contribute a little infomation about the GD coverage. The model who beat Victor\'s in the 40k large category was by Scott Bowser (who won the sword here last year), and it was a really interesting conversion of a space marine commander riding a carnosaur. It WAS very nice, as would be expectd from him, I don\'t wanna say it was painted better than Victor\'s though, and it was a completely different style, so that might have been an issue with judging.
As with the Demon Prince, I think if the ethos of the hobby was THAT big of an issue with the piece, they should have disqualified it outright, not docked it and given it a silver. Victor even said that\'s what he\'d have preferred. At least then he\'d be able to tweak it some more and then enter it into a completely unbiased competition, where he\'d have a chance of winning gold in the category.

As for other categories, I know how the 40k and fantasy single figs went down...everything else I SORT OF know, but don\'t exactly remember 100%, but here goes...

40k single: (1, 2, 3)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/01-40ksingle/_MG_1734-01.htm (Zach Lanier)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/01-40ksingle/_MG_1729-01.htm (Yours Truly :)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/01-40ksingle/_MG_1726-01.htm (forgot who, but it was with this model)

Fantasy: (1, 2, 3)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/04-fsingle/_MG_7349-01.htm (myself again...yay)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/04-fsingle/_MG_7345-01.htm (fairly sure it was Todd Swanson, who won the sword too)
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/04-fsingle/_MG_7351-01.htm (no name again, sorry...)

Todd won open with these too I think (I know he got another gold at least):
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/09-open/_MG_1548-01.htm

He won the fantasy regiment as we all know, this one got silver in the category:
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/05-flarge/_MG_1469-01.htm

and these crazy ones got a bronze:
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/05-flarge/_MG_1990-01.htm

(Bowser\'s carnisaur):
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/03-40kvehicle/_MG_1484-01.htm

These won 40k squad, http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/02-40ksquad/_MG_1604-01.htm which, as a side note look very similar to these from the UK GD 2002: http://sodemons.com/gd22uk/gd22uk%2040k%20squad/DSCN8414-01.htm

Silver Squad:
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/02-40ksquad/_MG_1586-01.htm (These were hot, I liked them a lot)

I THINK these were the bronze winners:
http://sodemons.com/gd26baltimore/02-40ksquad/_MG_1583-01.htm

I personally thought it was a great competition, probably better than last years, with a lot of new faces from all over the country. I\'m looking forward to next year\'s very much, and maybe I\'ll be prepared this time...

-Andrew

(BTW, in case you haven\'t figured it out yet, sodemons.com has the coverage up...and they\'re f*cking nice pics)
