Golden Daemon- is there any point?

for me, the golden demon award is a point of pride, and maybe a little bit of a marketing tool:twisted:...

no matter what any of the haters say online after the event, nobody ever won a demon without hours of hard work, and creativity(though there may have been a scandalous bastard who tried to pawn off someone else\'s mini as their own)...
the minis don\'t paint themselves...

i\'ve been the guy in the final four a few times, and it is the most nervewracking experience...
especially when you finish 4th!!!
feels kinda like gettin\' kicked by a horse...
getting my mounted nurgle lord in the \'07 catalog did help the pain a bit...

finally winning a demon feels great...
now, with the demon lounge goin\' on, it\'s even better...
having gary oldman check out a shelf full of your minis, with your name proudly displayed, is not an everyday opportunity...

in it\'s own small little way, winning a demon is a bit like winning an oscar, and the sword is like best picture...
in the end, we all want a bit of validation for the hours of hard work and thought, not to mention the literal blood, sweat, and tears, that go into painting a beautiful mini...

cheers
jah

Im hoping to go this year and am entering for the first time, i doubt ill even place but it will give me a chance to show some of my work to some of the golden demon winners that would be at the meet-up and get really good feedback which could help for next time i enter

It\'s a lot of fun, for sure. I\'ve been to Games Day twice, and one year got a mini sent down from a local qualifier program they were running. I must say, the adrenaline rush of seeing your first mini on the winner\'s shelf is pretty damn sweet.

Getting first place in one of the toughest categories in Canada last summer was pretty amazing as well. The 40k Single cabinet was full of models that I thought could easily place in the top 3, and I was struggling to narrow it down to a top 10 let alone top 3. Imagine my surprise when I got first :p

Getting a trophy probably won\'t change your life. Chicks don\'t seem to care (university has taught me not to over-generalize, but the vast majority of them sure as hell don\'t!), you really can\'t put \"Golden Demon Winner\" on a resume/CV, and sadly there\'s no million dollar cheque attached like with the Nobel Prize.

But still, it\'s an honor to have your name on the same list as some pretty amazing painters. Getting 3rd place behind Vincent Hudon and Mathieu Fontaine was pretty cool in 2007, and then in 2008 I placed in categories with guys like Laurent Exposito Mas, Manuel Sanchez, and John Papoulakos. Some pretty heavy-hitters in terms of North American Demon winners there (and even a Spaniard! :))

I would love to go to GDUK or perhaps Spain as well, since I still know a bit of Spanish. If I wanted to enter something into those competitions, I\'d probably spend countless hours on a single fig instead of entering 3-5 categories like I would a Canadian Demon competition. The difference in quality is pretty amazing, only a handful of our top winners would be cracking the top 3 across the pond.

Really? Why not? Proves dedication, determination and excellent attention to detail!

Hell, I have RPGs on my CV. Involves plenty of teamwork and leadership (when GMing).

There is no point to anything, in 3 billion yers time the earth will have been swallowed by the sun and all mans efforts will have been in vain. Even if by some miracle we get off earth and to another solar system, the universe will continue to expand until all matter is spread so thin life becomes impossible (or there will be a big crunch, equally as fatal for life).

So no, no point in even getting up in the morning really...

I entered in three categories - the two I worked most on and was most pleased with at the time didn\'t place - it wasn\'t disappointing to me at all as the quality of what did eventually get the awards were so much better in many ways that whilst I\'m still proud of what I did I clearly see what I needed to do to improve.

This is very true, bothe the effort not always = results and the seeing what makes a winning entry.

First year i went and entered, i didn\'t make first cut. i was so determined the next year that i got alot of tips that year and worked my but off so that my entire from the next year was better then gold from the year before. i came up with a bronze. (my base had super glue on it from a last minute repair.)
granted it was youngbloods, but its a similar approach. enter and then next year work the whole year painting your entires to be better then anybody else\'s who entered the year before!
this year I\'m entering the adult categories with a similar approach! yes my entries arent all better then the last years, but they are at that lvl and thats what i worked on all this year. its what you gotta do
goodluck!

I think all competitions (not only GD) are good ways to \"kick yourself in th a$$\". When I paint for a competition I spend more time on a mini as usual. So even if I don\'t win I could say to myself, I did my very best! So DO IT!!! :)

It depends what your reasons are for entering. If you really want a Demon then go for it, all out and try and win one or you will be disappointed with yourself. If you want one to help with getting commissions and getting yourself known then once again do it.

But if your just entering for the fun of it to see what its like I would say dont put to much pressure on yourself 1st time round, use it as a way to gauge the even and see if you like it. It is a long day in a big hall full of kids and shouting GW staffers.

Just do it. You have plenty of time to think of a mini you would like to enter and then work you\'re little heart out to make it the best that you can. At worst you\'ll end up with a fantastic figure... the best ...well we can all dream of lifting that sword.

Seriously though it\'s great to challenge yourself. The first year I entered I got nowhere. Last year I worked harder and managed to get a figure through the first cut. That for me was an achievement and I was buzzing for the rest of the day. You only get a bit of paper and a pin badge to recognise that achievement but when it\'s your first their feel like gold dust.

I would say come just for the meeting up we do at \" HOTEL LE\' EXPENSIVE\".
Each year the meet up gets better, its away from the crowds ,people chat & share creations ,techniques and goodies !
Hearing first hand how to do something is worth its weight in gold:D ;)
Bring your 2\" bestest minis ever\", stick one in the show and bring the other over for folks to give you input on.
I guarantee :D you will go away with fire in your bones and a wave of creativity ! :flip: :bouncy: :flip: :bouncy:.
Thats pretty much how I learnt to improve (and after 40 years modelmaking figures, I still need input from my peers. ).

GOD bless ........................V :D

I agree with Adie.

Just enter a model and then come to the very very expensive hotel for some socialising.

The best way to improve are seeing your entry against others and to get honest feedback and advice.
You can get all that from GD
..........but alas not honest feedack or advice from me. :)

i will be there this year for the secound time, but will be full of nerves as the first time i enterd some butter fingerd judge dropped my entry and i got it back in pieces, beleave me wheni say that feels worse than getting kicked by a horse or comeing 4, but i will try again, i dont expect to win but as otheres have already said, what you learn from the event is of far more value that a win, thow a demon would be nice to

Pictish Mini Painting

I'm actually a man!
I am looking at entering this year.

I get to go in early with my local manager as i have a medical issue which means i have to be near a bathroom, hence queing outside for 3 hours is bad.

I usually help set up tables and i know aa few staff members as friends now from around the country as i have done it for a few years.

I always meant to enter GD, but always thought i would be no where near good enough.

My aim is to get into the first round of pases, i.e. a little green sticker, that for me would be my goal.

just need to get some model designs down and buy summat.
