I agree with the \"natural instrument\" though - I\'m much more at ease behind a kit with stuff to bash :p

My sister plays drums (almost never lol), some of my good friends formed a band for the talent show and played bohemian rhapsody. They won and got me and some of their other friends to roll the platform they were on around the school while they played. Everything that they needed was put on this large wooden platform so it would be easy to move everything into a small u-haul. lol

Frustration

So, I learnt the bagpipes.
And I can half paint a mini half decently.
And I\'m learning Taijiquan.

What they\'ve all got in common is that they\'re all art forms, and they all kill you in the same way - frustration. The more frustrated you get, the worse you get. Relax. Don\'t concentrate on what you\'re doing wrong, concentrate on finding the feeling behind what you are doing. The trick is finding the feeling. Of everything I\'ve learnt, Taijiquan is the most frustrating, and also what rewards frustration the least.

@Ogrebane: Fantastic little anecdote there, mate. That pianist was a real artist.

Determination is the key.
I\'ve never taken a lesson, myself.
I bought myself a book of chords, a guitar, and sat down and started forcing my fingers into what seemed terribly bizarre contortions.
It hurt. I kept at it.
Now, more than ten years later, the contortions don\'t feel so bizarre or painful.
I never learned to play anything complex.
All I ever wanted to be able to do was play the chords, and sing around the campfire, and sometimes serenade girls.

I could be accounted a half-decent rhythm guitarist, but don\'t ask me to play a solo.
Can\'t do it. Don\'t want to.

The trick is, I think, in learning to place your thumb properly, and building up the strength in your fingers.
Patience and perseverence.
Or however you spell perseverence.

yeah that pain thing.. means your doing something wrong.

do try to relax. :D all your muscles must work without spasm so if nearby muscles tense if works it\'s way to your palying real quick.
my friend flicks his wrist to loosen up, freaky stuff, looks like his hand is made of rubber.
hitting an off note to me once made my entire body clench. now i realise that it\'s only one of many notes and is VERY quickly forgotten. don\'t stop, don\'t pine for your mistake, just KEEP GOING.



baby steps. learn simple chords and just swap them at your own pace. you don\'t need to be making \"musik\" while you practice.

ah yeah and really really learn the fret. it really helps.

Finding the right tutor is a definate must. I have been playing violin for a few years, and I can play a lot of different styles, classical, irish, traditional fiddle, but each style of music is a different way of playing. My first tutor was absolutely wonderful, she played beautifully and made sure that I understood the instrument and how to read the music before we even ran the bow over the strings. We moved out of state, and the tutor I found was a nice guy, but not so good with violin. At least not for me. Basically what I\'m getting at is that if you\'re not happy with the sounds you\'re putting out, talk to your instructor. If he\'s good, he\'ll give you some good feedback about your playing. Also, it takes time. And just be glad that your guitar can\'t make some of the horrible sounds that a violin is capable of:D

nah man, i\'m not in a band. have some friends that are but i\'m too old to be running off with a band. :D

it\'s not impossible that we\'ve met though. maybe fought over the last fancy plectrum in a music shop. :p

Hey Mosch,
Sounds like you\'re in for many years of joy and learning with the guitar.

I have some suggestions for you.

1: Learn \'G\' major, \'C\' major and \'D\' major plus the simple \'G\' major scale. And from there play around with different combinations of these three chords. With the \'G\' major scale you can improvise simple melodies. Just make \'em up as you go. This should be fun for you.

2: Learn some simple tunes that you really like.

3: (This is really number one for me) Learn a basic 12 bar blues and the pentatonic minor blues scale. It\'s a helluva lot of fun!

I dunno, really....


just a pretty picture that came up when I typed \"guitar pick art\" into google....

I figured someone somewhere had painted a very cool scene on a plectrum, thus giving me a \'fancy plectrum\' to present....but thats the best I could find.

It is mesmorizing though.....:eek:
