GW changes to cheaper materials and puts up prices.

Aside from the whole "We're gonna pretend resin costs more, and therefore charge you more" issue, I worry about the durability.
As I understand whats being said GW are intending to move to the hard resin similar to if not identical that Privateer Press are using.
Long term durability, well paint it rather than leave it to yellow due to ultra-violet light an it "should" have a long lifespan.
Cost issue s however, that's another ball park entirely. Resin isn't as expensive as metal and given the vast quantities GW will be buying they will be able to force a damn good price from their suppliers. I wouldn't be surprise if the production cost per figure was in the region of 5p, which makes a huge profit margin and the proposed price hike just obscene.
I have worries with resin models of coming back to find the resin has softened and left everyone with a case of droopy sword syndrome, or worse.
Does someone who's owned a few more resin pieces know if this is a legitimate fear, or do they have newer formulations that will handle the heat better?
Its a completely legitimate concern.
The production quality of Forgeworld is terrible and so a lot of times is GW own "Quality Control", so expect broken and bent parts.
Currently working on the Eldar Phantom Titan (No I didn't buy it, commission work) and its taken over an hour and a half to clean the mouldlines off the feet and shins.
Bent parts, misaligned components, stupid unneccessary complications in components. (12 parts per each foot section? WTF?)
Its taken 30 metal pins to hold the Legs together.
A completly stupid method of hinging the cockpit so you can see the pilot.
Oh Yes the most important part...NO INSTRUCTIONS.
.................

I took the Revenant Titan I have out the other day to see about maybe putting it together, funny enough. Took one look and just thought "F*ck this for a game of soldiers. Back into the drawer you go". I did notice it had two different head assemblies with it though...Which was a nice surprise.
A metric arseload of injector flash and other undesirable bits from the mold also didn't help...

The "5p" gross production for a single figure isn't even close to a joke either, unfortunately ...Which is just incredibly off putting when it comes to pricing. Not to mention the fact I actually had a swift look through the current range of GW sculpts and found pretty much everything I saw to be utterly lacking in appeal. One of my biggest pet hates of the current lines is how they decided to sculpt fur these days, it's...Well it's shit, to be frank. Reckon i'll be either press moulding existing bits I have that I like, in future and turning to sculpting, or buying other peoples "space knight" etc sculpts.
When it comes to quality and quantity, GW fail miserably compared to the independent sculptors and other companies out there right now. Not even bothering to resculpt and cast specifically for Resin and using existing molds just adds to the collective facepalm response. Lazy greedy sub par shite!

Well it's now up on GW....stating that they'll be even crisper minis with their new TOP SECRET resin.

They fail to mention the Health aspects of sanding resin.

That's clearly because the new, crisper minis will not need sanding! Flash and mould lines will be a thing of the past!

Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me.

GW is dying; it’s a slow death, but dying none the less. The company is cannibalizing itself in order maintain a profit suitable for its stockholders. How else can you explain there profit statement, GW has sold less units but made more profit, so simple put current players are going finance the dwindling player base.

I've been told by one of the managers that every single model has had brand new molds made for them from the master models. The guy's not the type to lie that I know of so I'm giving him BotD. I also asked about health hazards and apparently this stuff isn't hazardous.

I'm eager to see what they are actually like in the flesh on Saturday.

As far as I know, supplier's still have to have a profit too. GW want the resin and so will have to pay what the suppleir charges. I would like to see the figures on how you've worked out that it will cost about 5p a model to produce, if it was that cheap to do big scale resin production surely we would have seen a company come along to out-do GW?

Some companies currently are, with much cheaper resin minis

There was a statement/comment by gw on facebook saying the stuff was reported safe by a toy testing facility. However they didnt state if you could file cut or sand it safely.

I may purchase abbadon as its one mini i have always wanted now its in resin i may try it.

I can't say I'm overly impressed with this move to resin - especially if the price is going up as well. They say on the website that the minis will be better than the metal ones....well the pics of the resin figures on the GW site certainly look sharper than the metal ones but, I can't help but think that before I get to put paint on any of these (should I actually stump up some hard earned cash for any ?!?) that I will need:-
1-a large pan of hot water to straighten them out
2- a large amount of putty to fill in holes and such
3- metal to pin because although the "components are lighter so no need to pin"(GW quote) there will still be fragile small pieces that will have snapped of in transit/straightening that will not be strong enough to just stick back on with a bit of the super stuff.
4- a dust mask to file/sand them because although they may be "safe to eat" I bet it's not safe to breath the dust in.

The above points are based on the Forgeworld minis that I have bought and the general "quality" control that GW provides for its minis.

Luxury!

I misguidedly bought a Baneblade once and, during the clean-up process, I swear I threw away more than I kept:)

...and I nearly wore out a Dremel...

you dont need to file this stuff, so iv'e been told. Looking forward to giving it a try this saturday. Iv'e had enough of all the moaning online at the moment on the various forums etc so I figure I'll try it out then make up my mind.

I am picking up the abbadon model as i was getting last week but pulled from stores. GW are still ripping the piss out of this though.

I will form my own opinion when I have bought, cleaned and painted one of the finecast models myself. By the way, I also own some FW models and I have never had any bed parts, neither on inquisitor Salomon Lok nor on the titan crew. The price increase is a sad thing, but I can imagine switching to a completely new material is quite an investment, even for a big company. Imagine BMW switching metal for carbon in their cars (I´m German, so I had to think of cars).
Time will tell. Well, I actually have enough models stocked to last me some years, I shouldn´t even be bying anything.
