GW inks - are no more.

Hi folks...

If there is already a thread about this, I appologise as I must have missed it...

It appears that GW have discontinued their entire inks range, and it is now impossible to get them anywhere... which came as a bit of a shock given how much I use them and that I just went up to Warhammer World with the intent of replacing my entire set on Thursday (amoung other things) only to be told first that I had to buy them from one of the local stores as HQ don\'t have them any more, then to be told by the local stores that they had been asked to ship all their remaining stock back to HQ a week ago... apparently (I eventually found out after some digging) to fulfill HQ\'s mail-order obligations for the stuff (people in the know bulk-buying the stuff before it disapeared).

The ink range is allegedly being replaced around June/July with \'Foundation Inks\', but these will be \'different\' in some (as yet undefined) way.

So... am I the last to know about this? Has everyone else managed to find out about this ahead of time and bu-up lots of inks?

And above all else... does anyone have a pot of chestnut ink I can buy off them?!! :)

I\'m a bit p*ssed off with GW over this to be honest... kicking myself for not replacing my inks sooner when I had the chance :-(

Watch the GW space, I read recently that they are going to release a set of washes...sounds like a load of old ink to me :D

The foundation inks could possibly be these washes see page 10 of the UK White Dwarf #340.

i\'m not sure discontinuing their ink range is a good idea, but lucky for me my local gw still sells them :D

I wonder if their \"foundation inks\" are intended to be used for \"dipping\"? Or stain-painting to be more polite ;) It WOULD be a technical breakthrough for many of their gaming customers, the three-colours-and-sand-on-the-base crowd.

Most art/craft/hobby shops will have dozens of coloured inks to choose from, at least caligraphy and airbrush inks. If you look online you can find thousands of colours of inks for animation, printing, tattoo\'s, drafting, archival and who knows what all else.

You\'re almost guaranteed to be able to find a match the human eye wont be able to distinguish. And you can get white ink and metallic ink and all kinds of other colours all while saving a few bucks, pounds, euro\'s, yen, what have ya.

Firstly, thanks Undave :)

To anyone who\'se local GW still has any... go buy them!! :)

I think the \'Foundation inks\' are what I was told about as the replacement... but I still think it\'s pretty bad for them to discontinue the whole range without having the replacements ready, and without warning anyone. :-(

I was wondering if any other companies made anything similar... are the W&N ones really close then?

In fact, don\'t W&N make some of GW\'s stuff for them, brushes for a start?

I heard they\'re pulling some paints too... some pretty useful ones imo too!

There was a thread over at Warseer and OP.

Brazen Brass
Midnight Blue
Fiery Orange
Bronzed Flesh
Tentacle Pink
Bad Moon Yellow
Terracotta
Scaly Green
Tanned Flesh

...

Brazen Brass! I use it as a base for all my metallic gold bases! :(

Scaly green is so useful for shading too. Terracotta I\'ve been using like Dazza has for NMM :(

Midnight Blue = Maybe Necron Abyss? but I do like M Blue. Bronzed Flesh too GAAH

Stupid GW.

Chaos peeps must be upset about Tentacle Pink too.

they had a preview of the new inks at conflict scotland on sunday. one of the guys said they have changed the formula of them so that the inks go on smoother and dont gather into pools as much. i only saw one colour which is a lovely sepia colour. i didnt know they have discontinued the inks though, and i definately hope they replace chestnut, brown and black ink as well as flesh wash

Brazen brass though? o_O why are they getting rid of that one

that would be me! :cussing:
anyone have a good alternative? I\'ve actually been looking for one for a while, haven\'t found one very close. I don\'t usually use it straight but it makes a fantastic highlight.

isn\'t Terracotta one of the newer paints? i mean it has only been around since the newest pop-top pots.

Well Valejo Game Color paints are the spitting image of the GW paints color wise, and they also have the inks.

Reaper has a line (actually 2 lines) of ink. One for the Master Paints and one for the Pro Paints.

Just read a bit in White Dwarf about the upcoming Citadel Washes but there weren\'t specifics about formulation.

It\'s all good, for me I rarely use inks anyway. :drunk:

No it\'s been around since the White Top Round bottles.
I have a bottle still on my painting table used for an undercoat for flesh on a figure recently.

I\'m fairly certain that Terracotta came simultaneously with Graveyard Earth, Desert Yellow and a few others a while back. And that was certainly after the round bottles with white flip-tops had went.

Are you sure it\'s Terracotta Mike?

Yep.
Might have been dropped, then resurrected. (Still looks nothing like Real Terracotta though) :D
Now I think of it the bottle might have come out of one of the original Boxes of paints GW did, and I bought 1990 or 1991.

I remember Terracotta coming out during my previous painting life as it was the recommended basecoat for Dark Angels then. That must have been at least 16 years ago before my hiatus.
