But there is actually very little that we do which is for the benefit of Humanity. Does that mean we should only do good and worthy things. These people probably spend have their time on \"Cool Planet or Not\" achieving very little worthwhile but amusing the crap out of themselves!

I\'m almost certain that the US contingent of scientists went to the Czeck Republic on the taxpayers dime. So using my dough to argue over planet size (Freudian?) irritates me. As does the malfunctioning Mars probes (Freudian?) and the 10-year taxpayer funded SETI project which failed to yield any alien radio programs or top 40 stations.

You\'re missing the other implications

You realize that since the definition of a planet requires it to be a large round mass rotating around a star, then since Katy Couric moved to the evening news, Al Roker is no longer a planet!

Well not going to change much for me :p

Just a question, I\'m pretty sure considering the debae that it\'s not set in stone, but how do you define a planet ? People seem to be talking about size as the main factor which does suprise me a little bit, and I neer do any physiques nowday so a little lesson can\'t hurt :)

I have a friend who works with The Samaritans. Apparently the poor fella Pluto was on the line today bawling his eyes out. Very dejected he is. Gutted in fact. He is contemplating a move to a different, more tolerant solar system.

Oh, and he said the people who made the decision are wankers. What next, Mercury? It ain\'t much bigger than old Pluto. I\'d be nervous...

Used to be a planet was a mass orbiting the sun and visible by the naked eye.

The definition agreed to by the IAU:
A ``planet\'\' is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

They also created something called a dwarf planet:
A ``dwarf planet\'\' is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

It was pointed out that Earth, Mars Venus and Jupiter had NOT cleared their orbital zones. The Earth has 10000 near Earth asteroids - Jupitor 100000. So their own definition makes Earth not a Planet

In my chemistry GCSE i didnt have a clue, one of the questions was along the lines of: What is the chemical equation for Sodium Hydrochloride and sulpher iron oxide (or some other long rubbish)
I didnt have a clue so i just wrote my name Matthew with loads of little numbers and symbols next to the letters!
I was rubbish at chemistry never understood anything.....but physics, now theres a different story!

I learned enough in chemestry to be recognized as a mechanic...then promptly forgot all the crap you just never had a use for, like chemical equasions. Phisics was a lack of interest story. Biological science was great! I wantd to be a marine biologist but my folks at the time said it was useless and threatened to boot me out if I went for it...bastards! lol
