Hello again & a question

Hi all, it seems like a long time since I\'ve been about, due to various things such as real-life (which seems to just get in the way of everything).

Anyway, I\'ve finally made a concerted effort to pull my finger out and commit some time to painting mini\'s again. I\'ve replaced many paints that have gone solid, bought a number of new ones (GW foundation and GW washes) and even gone as far as buying myself a nice spangly new badger airbrush.

Now, one thing I have been mulling over the past weekend is creating a miniature painting wiki. One of my biggest problems when painting is that I will often get distracted by something when I\'m half way through a project (i.e. work) and when I come back to it a few weeks later I have no recollection of how I\'d started painting it other than a scrappy peice of paper with random letters all over it. What I was considering was creating a wiki resource that would be filled full of articles dedicated to a specific end result. For example, there are lots of different ways of painting bone, so I\'d aim to have a page that contains a picture of the end result of each of these methods, and then an article for each method that covers the paints used, step-by-step instructions and any useful comments. Finally at the end of the article there would be a list of links to other resources, such as CMoN posts, magazine articles, etc, etc.

It wouldn\'t be my intention to try and replace the plethora of guides, articles or forums that exist on the internet or in magazines, more I want to compliment them and make them more beneficial to the end user by putting them all into a logical format. I\'m hoping to get to the point where I personally try out, photograph and document methods and techniques as I find them. One bugbear I have is where I find an article in a magazine and discover that the author has clearly not used the paints/techniques they reckon they have and I\'ve now messed up the mini I was painting, by trying out articles its possible to get a much better idea of what works and what doesn\'t.

What does anybody else think about this idea? If everybody thinks is pap, then I\'ll only create a wiki for my own use, but if it could be of use to more people, then I\'ll spend a bit more time and make it a bit more user friendly and do some customisation of the wiki.

I think you got beat to the bunch with the compiled articles now in the painting
guide available here on the CMON store.

sounds like a good idea. although you could save some effort writing them all up and do links to end results.

I think this sounds like a really cool idea.

Like what you said, click on a page specifically for painting bone, to find a dozen different color recipes along with a small picture of the end result next to it, followed by footnotes with links to the original source article, just like Wikipedia.

It saves the trouble of having to scour through tons websites, tons of articles and different pages of single articles just to find the one recipe you\'re looking for.

Just think of the value of pages for skin tones, hair colors, different kinds of nmm, all the different ways of painting red, etc.. all on their own specific entry.

Cool idea. I would rather see this implamented as part of Cmon though. No offence to you, it\'s just that I like to visit one site for information, not two, not 10. Plus you already have a bunch of experts here that would probably all be willing to add to a Wiki if it was here.

One thing to consider if you do, do it on your own is that you would either have to do all your own articles or get permission to use other peoples. All of the articles on here are owned by the writers, and without getting permision you don\'t have the rights to copy them, or even re-type them up.

Thanks for all the replies. Quite a few constructive comments and a general consensus that a Wiki on painting \'schemes\' is a good idea, providing that its tackled as a proper wiki, and not a collection of artlces (which as mentioned has been done to great effect on this sites store )

Yes a CMoN wiki would be cool - but it would add a significant demand onto the site. I personally use multiple websites and magazines, so for me a wiki would act as a visual index to many different resources.

As for copyrights, you\'re correct if I were considering putting up full blown articles stolen from here and other sites. My vision though is a gigantic index on specific recipes - as matt said, \'Skin Tone - pale\', \'Skin Tone - Black Orc\', etc, etc.

On replicating a specific item off a site or out of a magazine - you can\'t actually copyright the fact that you used a blood red base coat highlighted with dwarf flesh (else nobody would be able to use any painting guide). What you copyright is your photo\'s and words. Sure if somebody plagurised those words and photos then they\'d be in trouble. That said, you\'re 100% right in mentioning copyright!


Anyway, I\'m currently finishing off writing a website for a customer (yup webmonkey both day and night!) once I\'ve done that I\'ll tidy up the wiki I played about with the other day on the works development server.
