Help me polish this off? Please..?

Hey everyone, I thought I\'d show my current WIP mini, & at the same time I\'m hoping to gather a few ideas as to how to finish this little fella off if it\'s no trouble. :)

VenDreadWIP.jpg

This is (going to be) my Venerable Dreadnought, Adflictatio.

I\'ve asked a few opinions of other painters, & so far a few people have mentioned they\'d like to see some design or another on the gold sarcophagus in the middle.
(It\'s meant to hold the remians of the pilot in life-support, for those not familiar with 40K, I\'ll try & steer away from other game-specific stuff as well, or at least say what it means)

When I was painting him up, I briefly considered a little laurel wreath in brown inks on the flat gold panel, but in the end I left it blank.
I\'m not really sure it it would make the model look cluttered, or if I\'m just nervous about messing it up.. hmm.. ???

The Terminator helmet is to mark him out as my 1st Co. The 1st Company are the Terminator company, & so everyone in my army is either a Termie, or in this guy\'s case, an ex-Termie.

I ended up putting a Laruel wreath here, with his markman\'s honour within it (to represent an in-game skill), in truth it\'s not quite as neat as I\'ve managed to do in the past. I was considering doing the leaves again.

The way I did it, I painted the arm in (I\'ll try & use generic names) a dark, bluey grey (Shadow grey), & then painted the branches & leaves on, finishing the freehand before doing the blend from Shadow grey to white.

However, the white layers between the leaves don\'t quite sit right with me, I think I might go over the leaves again in Shadow grey, & then build the blend up to white, & then paing the leaves over the top of that blend.

Silly idea do we think? I\'m not 100% confident I could do them as good or better each time.

I\'ve not quite finished here, I\'ll do those rivets in gold, & also highlight the blue a little around the edges of the symbols, plus all the pipes & stuff I\'ve not done yet.

A bit of cleaning up to do here, plus I need to paint the power plant, the srapnel on the base & lots of other little details.
I\'m probably going to paint up the other set of arms (Assault Cannon & big ole\' Fist) to use him in lower points games, but at the mo this is the config I want for the army right now.

I\'ve got no ideas for his banner yet, if anyone\'s that particluarly interested you can see the other banners I\'ve done for the army in my sig link.
I was thinking of keeping the black & red chequered patteren I\'ve used throughout the army, but I\'m not sure what to do then.

Having said that I quite fancy the idea of one of these mural style banners you sometimes see, it would certainly help show him as being more err.. venerable than a *normal* Dreadnought, but I\'m not sure if I could make a good enough job of it, I\'ve never tried using GW paints as watercolours before.
Hell, I\'ve never tried watercolours before full-stop.

Any comments & thoughts on the painting & modelling most appreciated, and if you have any ideas I\'m still totally open to suggestions on this fella; So many times someone mentions a brilliant idea to me just when I\'ve finished painting, so this time I\'m going to ask beforehand! :D

Anything, from changing stuff I\'ve already done, to the colour of the remaining metallics, to random stuff you would have dome dfferently & why you do(n\'t) like it, Please chuck it all in.

Cheers.

This is stunning as it is, first things first i think the wreath on the arm looks fine as it is, can\'t really suggest anything to make it any better,

On the sarcophagus i think it would be best to paint something, even if its just something small, to break up the area a bit, its annoying because the blending is beautiful and would be a shame to cover it up, something dark brown woud go quite well on there as it wouldnt look out of place at all, and as i said would help to break up the surface.

If you\'ve used the checked scheme throughout the army that would definately be a good choice for the banner, and in my opinion i think a white banner with freehand on would suit this model very well too, for what its worth.

Hope this has helped you a little bit, from an honest onlooker they are my opinions on the project so far.

Excellent work. Joe

Dont look too bad to me. If I had to make a critique I\'d say mabey get some variation in the grey/black parts. The tips of the missles might use some color. Nice work.

Coffin Dodger / Keymaster
only thing I can add is that I think it is too clean.. needs a bit of smoke/heat discoloration around the barrel tip, bits of wear on the hatches, grease a the joints, etc.

GREAT freehand.

You know what would look pukka on the front of that (if it fits!) would be the ubiquitous book from the top of the Imperial preachers banner pole,or the Ravenwing chapter masters book from the front of his speeder.Flames for the legs, you seem to be a freehand lover ;) and I always think flames and checks are a classic look :D Mind you I love the blend of the gold on the front,It\'d be a shame to lose it behind something, but it depends on the look you\'re after. If you\'re going for a classic clean Ultramarines look it\'d be great,if you\'re going for the OTT cluttered look (my approach to marines) add something to it. Great work,be sure to keep us updated ;)

Cheers for the advice so far, I think I am going to try something on the gold Sarcophagus, not entirely sure what though.

As for weathering & damage, yup I\'ve seen it done ever so well on many minis, but since I haven\'t weathered any of the rest of the rmy, this guy would sudden;y look very out ofplace were I to do it on him.

My next army is going to heavily weathred (an Imperial Guard army based on the Colonial Marines, complete with APCs, Smart guns & the like), but to be honest I wouldn\'t weather my vehicles unless the troopers are too.
I really don\'t like how many people seem to weather their vehicles, but not the dudes, they all should be mucky, or none of them imho.

@shaun rl: Cheers mate, but the grey bits you noticed aren\'t done yet. They\'re going to be a mustard-yellow colour, the same mix I used for all the weapons across the army.

Thanks a lot for the feedback so far, any more thoughts, crits & the like would be appreciated, I still haven\'t done any more work on this guy.
Cheers! :)
