Does anyone know what the \'roman\' is for 300 please? They haven\'t made that many Rocky films yet so I am stuck!

OK, as I understand it, numerals work like this:

I = 1
II = 2
III = 3

Then an I before a letter is 1 below, and after is 1 above...

ie.

IV = 5 - 1 (4)
V = 5
VI = 5 + 1 (6)
VII = 7
VIII = 8
IX = 10 - 1 (9)
X = 10
XI = 11 etc

XII XIII XIV XV XVI XVII XVIII XIX

Then we get into the tens:

XX = 20
XXX = 30
XXXX = 40

I believe L is 50
C is 100
M is 1000

Dunno much after that.

You\'d probably be better off Googling it.

2007 is MMVII btw :p

Don\'t know why that bothered me enough to write. :beer:
Just to be a nit-picky trivia nerd, this is true, and basically what\'s been said is true: this IS how Roman numerals are done.
It\'s not how the Romans did them, but it IS how they are done now.
The ancient Romans would have said XXXX = 40 or IIII = 4.
It was only after the Roman numerals were abandoned that people began short-handing them.

I thought that was just for the public spaces, where they may not be quite as literate? Oh well.

@Ritual - Isn\'t our current numerical system based on the arabian system?

(I heard we brought back the concept of \"0\" from the crusades... Along with sherbet... Mmm... Sherbet...) :D

The general rule is if a number occurs out of highest to lowest sequence you subtract. There are a number of reasons why you might not want to use that notation so \"IIII\" is sometimes used instead if \"IV\" for \"4\".

Checking Wiki which isn\'t always reliable they cite one example of \"IIX\" instead of \"VIII\" for \"8\". There is also an apparent rule that limits what can be used for subtraction, so using \"IC\" for \"99\" is generally not according to the rule.

@Dan
It\'s not just based on... it IS the Arabian system (or the Hindu-Arabian system, rather). Hence, the reason for making such a conversion program! :D

@tzor
Yes, but the rules that Wiki mentions are much more modern inventions. The Romans didn\'t have those rules.
