I don\'t know from what series but I recently saw a film, narrated by Attenborough, about spiders and bugs producing silk. It was an astonishing film! :wow: I never knew spiders could hunt in so many different ways.

Was that the one with the Caffine sipder? Now wait that was something else :)

I know exactly the show you are talking about! My favorites were the velvet worm that would spray glue over its victims, the \"net\" spider that hangs arm\'s length above the ground and pushes a silk net down over prey, and the \"bola\" spider that would swing a glob of sticky silk on the end of a line to snare victims. Great stuff!

Found the link to the show Ritual mentioned:

Attenborough is without peer for narration. Did he do the Blue Planet series?

Speaking of interesting animals, has anyone else been watching the new \"Planet Earth\" series on Discovery? I have seen two episodes and the cinematography is jaw-dropping. I have seen about 5 or 6 animals in the two episodes that I have never heard of before, and this is from someone who loves nature shows and was a zoology major in college. Bill, you need to check out this series!

We\'ve had quite a discussion about planet earth, too :D

Yeah, Attenbrough does pretty much any nature show that the BBC is involved in, including Blue Planet, which was one of the best.

These days he takes a back seat, but I remember when I was a nipper, seeing him hiding out in the undergrowth with all manner of wild creatures close by, crawling through anthills (was that in \'The Trials of Life\'?), all sorts of crazy stuff.

In general I prefer it when there are no humans in view (although sometimes for a true idea of the scale of things I think Planet Earth could have done with some more people in shot) but he always had the good grace to realise that it was the animals, not him who were the stars of the show, and always adopted that soft, unobtrusive sort of presentation style.

I don\'t normally go in for all of this \'Sir\' stuff, but with David Attenbrough I think it\'s throughly deserved. He\'s a legend!

Hopefully, if Sigourney Weaver is redoing his work, maybe he can redo some of her work...

I can\'t wait to see him crawl out of that Aliens sleep pod in just his undies....lol

I have Sir David Attenborough\'s autograph in my copy of the Life of Mammals book  He\'s from Leicester, as is his equally famous brother Sir Richard Attenborough :bouncy:

I actually have a good question for you, Bill, to keep the thread rolling.

I picked up a cool set of old Grenadier miniatures on ebay recently, and one of the minis is a Giant Beetle! Here\'s a link:

Since you seem to know quite a bit about colorful bugs, I thought I would look to you for inspiration about color schemes. Not sure what type of \"real life\" beetle it is based on, but it has large mandibles and no \"horns\".

Well, from what I can see it looks a lot like a regular male - females have smaller mandibles - common stag beetle (Lucanus cervus):

Not very interesting eh?

But as it\'s not very tightly based on any particular species, luckily there are some nice, brightly-coloured tropical beetles which are of similar shape! :D

Here\'s a couple I thought would be more interesting:
Mouhotia planipennis

Phalacrognathus Muelleri

Of course, you don\'t have to be tied to the type of beetle, so here are a few more nicely coloured beetles which might inspire you:

Bill, you little git... suggesting colour schemes from iridescent beetles... Are you Marquis de Sade reborn? ;) Way to go! lol

Was gonna say!

Some of those take irridescence just too far!

Break out the pearlescent medium and a bottle of absinthe before you start on those!

here are a few that would be simpler to paint...

I\'m just trying to give inspiration! As you can tell even from this small selection, the diversity of colouration on beetles is so vast that you could paint one pretty much any colour (except perhaps bubblegum pink), and get away with it. I\'m only here to help :D

Thanks, Bill!

Been out of town for a few days, so sorry about the belated response. I have to agree with the others that the irridescent ones are probably a bit out of my league as far as painting skills are concerned, but you have definitely given me some good options. I particularly like the second one, and the one with red patterning. Looks a bit like Darth Maul, actually.
