First time poster here. I play Warhammer 40k, and I've been in the hobby for a couple years. I'd probably rate my skill at the mid to upper end intermediate level. I've placed top three in two categories in the only painting comp I've entered so far. I'm always trying to push myself and improve my skills. I even take a commission here and there when I can get it. I hope you guys check out my gallery and pictures and by all means don't be gentle with the criticism. Cheers, and see you around the site!

FEEBACK!

don't worry, it doesnt hurt.

I uploaded my gallery before I posted. I guess they're still waiting for approval? I'm not sure how this site works quite yet. :p

Hey Ghevrix - checked out your gallery. I like the marines best I think. Nice and colourful, cleanly done. One bit of advice on the photography on a gallery submission - be sure to crop your picture to elimanate distracting elements and possibly use a background sheet of paper to show the mini off against, although the marines look fine against the game board. Also show the pictures at a roughly accurate to real life size. This allows the viewer to see it as their eye would in real life. Big photos reveal every little detail and mistake - great for the learning process, but save these for WIP threads. The gallery shot should be the nicest presentation photo of your finished work. You don't need it to fill the pc screen!

I think the Dread is okay, not sure what story you are trying to tell with the base though. As for crits - I would recommend drilling out barrels and there is a mould line you missed on the shoulder armour!! The highlighting on the edges could do with a few more transitional colours to smooth it out a little to. Take a look at this guys Dread's - I am sure you will enjoy his work and maybe it will give you a little inspiration to!!!

Fair enough. The marines were photographed against a game board because I don't personally own a digicam yet, so I had to make do with the iphone the manager at my local GW has. :p

As for the dread, I was aiming for a blasted urban kind of thing. In any case, it tells more of a story than the boxy dread sculpt would tell on it's own. Also I always drill out all my bolters.

To be honest I think a gameboard setting works absolutely lovely for a squad shot. If your gameboard is cool, may as well make good use of it. Mini photography is very difficult. I didn't appreciate how hard when I first joined up here and was surprised by how many were blurred or dark. Your shots are lit well to see whats going on colour wise and thats the most important thing. I am majorly impressed with the camera on my new phone (HTC Sensation) and can honestly say it is equally as good as my dedicated Fuji with 10 zoom. If not better.. suprising.

I think the dread base GW supply is lack lustre yep, your basing is certainly better. I have a dread sitting in a box. Not sure what I am going to do with mine yet. Might hack the legs up and play about a bit I think. On the subject of drilling I was referring to your smoke launchers mate - not bolters. If its hidden drilling isn't always worth it, but your smoke launchers are front facing so I personally would drill them. People tend to be picky on points like that. I have seen someone criticise one of the top artists on here for not giving his marine sculpt a mohican, despite the piece being absolutely stunning. The guy doing the moaning in this case was obviously a fool, but sometimes attention to such small things can improve the piece.
