High Elf Lion Chariot of Chrace

Hi! I am starting this kit my brother and his girlfriend gave to me for my birthday. I hope I dont ruin it!

I started by assembling the 2 lions. I had a few inconveniences while doing so and I had to use Epoxy putty to fill the gaps (mostly when attaching the heads to the bodies). I sculpted the putty to make it resemble the lions fur. It looks good, but it is noticeable to the keen eye that there "is something different" about that part of the fur.

Later I gave the mini a base of Humbrol enamel 170 matt (apparently it is so old that Humbrol doesn't have a pic of the color in it's website anymore). You will see the color on the attached pictures anyways.

I also painted the inside of the mouth with 1 part white (humbrol 34) 1 part red (humbrol 60) and the eyes with a very light sky blue (humbrol 56).

Any word of advice will be appreciated!

Update!

Now, a coat of desert yellow (humbrol 93) and some pink noses (based on the same red as before):

That's ok, I appreciate the intention too. I know that most people advice regarding enamel is "stop using it" anyways =P

i wouldn't say that. i have enjoyed enamels when i used them. they take a while to dry properly so you can get some nice blends in (you can also over blend them..). having said that, i dont know if i would use them on minis this small...

looking good so far though

Enamels are very good to use, especially for blendings. You can use them on this size of mini but it's not the best. Looks nice so far.

Hi Sosryet, looks like a nice clean start. I haven't used enamels since I was a kid. The couple of people I've known who've switched to acrylic after decades of mucking about with thinners haven't looked back though. Cleaner to work with & simpler to achieve results. I recommend dipping into them if you haven't tried yet. Myself, I've yet to try oil paints & weathering pigments on minis, they'll be my steps into the painty unknown, to be taken at some point! Cheers, B.

Yeah, I just love the coolness of enamels, you know [irony] they are more expensive, harder to find (at least here), require solvent instead of water, and take forever to dry completely [/irony].

Now, seriuosly, I have lots of enamels and I a lot to learn about them and miniature painting in general. Maybe some day I'll try acrylic paints.

The update: a lot has happened. I went back and used dark brown (Humbrol 170) for the creases and a mix of desert yellow (Humbrol 93) and white for the lighter areas. I decided that red was not a good idea for the carving on the sides, added some gold detail and retouched the eyes a bit. Don't worry about the claws and teeth. I just started thoose areas. Some touching up is also required in the body and fur.

ISSUE: The lions a getting lighter, and they should. In fact they should be white lions. The problem is that they don't look "white" yet and the closer I get, the less contrast I have... How do I make them whiter whithout loosing contrast?

A new update!

Other than the gems on the sides, I think the lions are pretty much done. Oh, except for the claws... I don't really like them. Any suggestions?

if you are using enamels should be easy take a dark brown and thin it down till it is a wash (should look like ink) then paint it in the resess wipe off any bits to did not want darker and wait for it to dry.

Simples

I tried what you suggested exilesjjb. I didn't want to over do it and I guess I underdid it. Hehe. Here are the pictures with and without flash (all through a magnifying glass):

Do you think I got it or should I keep trying?

its getting there, I should have said do not overload your brush. I admit I can not see you pictures to well but if you are willing to experiment then keep on going each layer you paint on will make it darker.
What you are looking for is a contrast that shows from 3 foot (which is where you will be on the wargames table)

It's been a while since my last update. Luckily I had a lot of work for the past weeks. That didnt give me much time to paint and take pictures. So I just painted.

I am preaty much done. A few things missing (like for example, batteries on my camera, I had to take this with my cell phone).

I need to purchase some static grass and maybe fix the position of the banner. I had a really hard time getting it... ehem... Erect?

Also, I have no freehand skills whatsoever... What I did is create a banner with photoshop and printed it on a adhesive paper. Then I just pasted it taking care to follow the shape of the pastic beneth.

I upload better pictures soon, once I recharge the batteries...
