Well, you guys will probably be seeing a lot more posts from me again. In one day I got fired and my wife left me, and in the intervening weeks, while looking for work and taking up jogging I gave myself shin splints, which will mean more time for painting. Now I just have to decide what to paint!

I\'m also trying to use this opportunity to pick up some new skills, since if my wife has her way I won\'t see the kids except on the weekend. So here\'s my list with some questions:

To learn painting painting, do you start drawing first, or go straight to painting?

Any suggestions on what language might be easy and most useful for an English speaking guy as a second language?

For you runners out there, what\'s your favorite suggestion for cross training while waiting for shin splints to heal?

And last but not least, since this is a painting community, do I paint the Butcher of Khardov first or the Dark Prince of Umbrey? :)

Ok, I think that about covers it. Now I just need to wait for my luck to turn around! at least this way though I won\'t feel bad if I decide to attend games day next year!

geez man that\'s a load of a week.

To answer your questions though:

What do you mean by painting painting? You mean canvas painting?

Any latin based language is easy for english speakers because we have a lot of latin roots in our vocabulary. I found French easiest to learn.

Biking is a good cross training to running and used to bike regularly when training with the Army. In my experience shin splints don\'t heal. You need the work on strengthening the muscles around your shins.

The last question I have no idea . . .

Sorry to hear your week was so terrible.

If you are painting on canvas, draw a picture firsrt.

Have you ever thought about Chinese. Its fun.

Yes, i did mean painting on canvas, sorry.

I thought Chinese would be on the opposite end of the spectrum for an English speaking person :)

Rough week.

For canvas painting, I think it might depend on what style you\'re going for.
Sometimes drawing first helps. Sometimes it hinders.
I would actually suggest chinese as a second language. I have several friends
learning it, and they\'re doing so quite quickly.
Apparently it\'s a very logical language with patterns that are easy for we
westerners to pick up. It also, apparently requires a pretty good ear, though.

I\'d suggest biking or walking to /help/ with shin splints, but swimming would
top \'em all. Whip-kick treading will do wonders for the muscles in the shins and thighs.

And I say paint Vlad first, then the Butcher. Vlad\'s just got that whole
cloaked thing going on.

Ouch,

Well to answer your last question first, I say Vlad as well, he\'s a prince and therefore priority over the Butcher.

Naukhel hit it right on the head with swimming, probably the best alternative you can take up. We water train for muay thai an awful lot to build leg strength not to mention its an all around cardio work out.

As for painting, I hear learning colored pencils first is actually a nice stepping stone, basically drawing only teaches you how to blend on a canvas better I suppose. I can\'t paint to save my life canvas wise however.

Wow, sorry to hear about all that man. :(

For painting, it\'s always best to start with a drawing first. Especially several shaded sketches on scratch paper to make sure you really understand the subject.

I would also suggest posting some stuff on www.deviantart.com
it\'s like coolmini but for all art. :) That way you can get some feedback.

You can see my gallery here.

Feel free to ask me if you have any more questions.

Woooooow that really sucks :wow:

Painting I say go with the drawing first. Although you can have some crazy fun with oil streight on canvas!

I dunno about the chinese option lol I have chinese freinds that tried to teach me. I had no idea if you pronounce it slightly differently words can take on completely different meanings . Fun trying though!

I reckon gentler exersise like swimming would be a good place to start, when you feel comfortable start cycling! Go from there.

Paint the butcher. What? lol no just paint the butcher.

Hope things turn around soon man ;) All the best

For art it really does depend on what you\'re trying to achieve and what style. It\'s certainly worth doing some sketches first which can help you work out the composition and general tones of the subject. You can do that straight on the canvas/paper/whatever else you may be painting on. You could draw with pencil or with the brush (ie. you\'re drawing with paint). Then you could go for two colours, block in the main areas of shades and highlights. The colours you choose needn\'t be on the finished piece.

Really, there are numerous ways on working. I\'d check out painting sites and books to give you some ideas.

Hope the good luck comes around soon for you.

nice gallery dude. concept art rules.

as for painting, get sketching to get the feel and then build it up with colour

sorry to hear about your shitty week. hope things pick up for you!

as for another language, i\'d go for french, spanish or italian. spanish prolly best for someone in the states

Prolly more productive Tim. I always hated French though. German I took to like a duck to water!

ACHTUNG BABY!

Alternativly, learn an obscure language like galic and impress ALLLLL your friends, win some new ones and make them all equally jealous you\'re so amazing!
Plus, when you really curse someone out they don\'t have a clue how to respond, bonus!

I think that I would have to go with the drawing first, work up to colored pencils, and then try your hand at painting. Reasoning is this, pencils and paper are cheap and easy to carry about, so you can head off to the park or whatever and just draw. Painting stuff from what I\'ve seen is a bit expensive per piece of art and you have to clean up after your self lollol But I do sugest that you get yourself a nice lapboard to draw on (moblie desk, got to love it).
As for the rest, I think that I\'m with the rest on swimming (hate running), and really not sure which I\'d paint first. Hummmm.???

Glad to hear you are working forward instead of dwelling on the past.

As far as art goes, I agree with most here: start with b&W and work up your color from there. The Colored pencils is a good idea, but I would take it a step further and say try watercolor pencils. Derwent and Staedtler make good WC pencils and it would give you some experience with using the water as a painting medium.

wonderful suggestions so far. I think I\'m going to have to go and get some pencils to start with. And being as my parents (where I\'m staying for now) live by the mohegan sun casino here in Connecticut, there is a very large Chinese population as well, so it might pay off...
