How do you make a snowbase?

I want to try making a snow base but I have no idea how to go about doing it. I have heard that baking soda is good but im not sure. Should I just go to a hobby store and find some snow flock?

Just picked up some stuff called \"Snow-tex\" by Deco Art at the local Hobby Lobby. Havent had a chance to try it yet, but when I do, I\'ll try to get a couple of pictures posted.

I use a special type of spackle called \"spackle-lite\". Works great for snow and as a lightweight filler, dries perfectly white and has a snowy texture and can be easily sanded, filed and painted.

my way....

...is using fine pumice from vallejo...before it dries, add diluted white and light gray onto it...i don\'t know...i always suppose that snow looking all too white doesn\'t really look like snow but what do i know...i live in a country where snow is man-made!!! lol

Living where I get to observe a lot of it first hand :D , you\'re very right, Mouse. On a sunny day, freshly fallen snow is very white, but in inhabited areas, this doesn\'t last long. It quickly gets stained or dirty and becomes mostly a mix of whites, grays and browns. This all depend on how old the snow is, temperatures, and an assortment of other things, but for the most part, snow doesn\'t stay pristinely white for very long. :(

Do the snow bases made with Woodland Scenics snow have a texture? Or are they smooth? This is always hard to tell in the pictures.

By the way, I have had most success with the DecoArt SnowTex so far. But I have not tried the Woodland Scenics snow (so far).

It gives the appearence of slightly translucent snow, it does have a nice texture to it, like crystals of ice. Have a look at my gallery or my wolfen article for bases done with Woodland Scenics snow. I use the same method described in the above link posted by The Artisans Edge.

Thanks Kat :)

Steelcult: This is not a great mini, but I have done the base with the DecoArt stuff without adding water or ink or painting afterwards: click me
It has a nice texture and dries very hard.

After. I applied the SnowTex with a brush and a toothpick (brush works better though), let it dry overnight and sealed the mini. According to the package the SnowTex needs 3 hours to fully dry but I wanted to be sure ;)

For slushy looking snow, let it partially dry, then add a bit of brown ink or vallejo smoke (watered down) to the edges. If you look at my confrontation duel entry (crossbows at dawn) in my gallery here on CMON, you will see that I have inked the edges of the snow to look like it is melting.
