How much money have you dropped in the Miniature Money Pit?

\"Serious\" I\'d say. Been collecting/playing since 2000/2001-ish. I know I\'ve spent some 400€ on Rackham minis alone. Add in some 7k points Vampire Counts and roughly 8k points Space Marines (though I do get a lot of the figs from ebay), plus tools, cases, books, paints... very rough guess would be some 3000€... but I really don\'t know precisely. Does that indicate \"having a problem\"? ???

Me personally not all that much. Maybe $2000 over 30 years. However I have probably 10k in minis (mostly over priced OOP stuff) sitting in the house. That\'s half of the haul my ex bought. He spent over the years well in excess of 50k on minis, gaming equipment, rule books and whatnot, much of in 2007. It\'s one of the reasons we split. He bankrupted us on Ebay over minis and mini related stuff. Then when it was time to split stuff up he kept everything but \"his half\" of the minis.

Oh God, don\'t ask me this question, I really don\'t want to think about the answer.

I know that at one point the local GW\'s computer software had me at $3700 or something like that. But that was probably 5-6 years ago, and didn\'t include the first few years of my purchases, or purchases made in other stores/online, and now I\'ve got stuff from multiple companies, plus all the years\' worth of hobby supplies, tools, paint, primer...

It\'s beyond calculation.

$1.97!

:D

Seriously, I\'ve spent probably a couple thousand if we\'re talking about everything mini-related.

@Amazon warrior...

surprisingy they didn\'t laugh but they did raise an eyebrow or two at first... at the end of the day it is extra money for them.

mine is through the Halifax.. basically like an excess on my contents cover.. the figure was arrived at through current market values for all commercially available stuff . Painted stuff that I hardly ever have around ut what I do was approximated and a figure agreed on based on my average ebay sales ..

OOP stuff was the biggest problem and after first proving some of the items worth it was decided that the best thing to do would be to photograph the collection as it stood and come to an agreed figure and pay the relevant amount..

There is a small cushion for additional stuff but I guess if I go crazy over it then a new figure can be sorted.. It\'s wortn anyone taking out a minimum figure seperate to standard contents as a lot of policies don\'t cover small High risk items which is what 30 in a pocket minis priced £6-8 each can well be considered.

I think just about anything is insurable as long as an amount is agreed and the correct payment made accordingly....

After an injury buggered up my sports career I also learned an important lesson in insuring myself.. remarkably few people do it. As I am a registered mini painter tax and the lot I have also got additional health insurance to cover my hands and my eyes should anything happen.. This was only just over £2 a month on top of my existing health policy and as far as I\'m concerned well woth it...

To answer my own question, I put Serious Collector, although I\'m on the lower end of that--somewhere in the $1,500-2,000 range, I would guess. But the \"problem\" is that is all within the last eight months, most within the last three...

My \"story\" is that I bought a few minis, mainly Grenadier and Ral Partha, back in the 80s but never learned to paint...I was (and am) a D&D player so I bought them mainly for that. Between the mid-80s and last year I might have bought 2 or 3 figures, if that (I can think of only one, for a D&D game about six years ago).

Last summer I decided to get a 4th edition game going so I bought a few Reaper minis to at least give the players something to use when they fought dice and other monster stand-ins on the dungeon tiles. But I started getting into it and dropped about $500 on Reaper over the second half of the year.

Then I discovered Rackham and it has been ugly ever since. I\'ve probably spent over $1,000 since the New Year. Thankfully the end is in sight: In a moment of nerdspiration I made an Excel sheet with every Confrontation item and then rated them 1-5, with 5 being \"must have\", 4 being \"really want\", 3 being \"want\", 2 being \"only if cheap\" and 1 being \"no thanks.\" I\'ve bought almost all the 5s and 4s and am more than halfway through the 3s...I\'ve still got a few hundred bucks-worth more to buy, but pretty soon the wallet deluge will slow.

The good/bad thing is that I haven\'t discovered anything I like nearly as much as Confrontation; there are figures here and there, but my spending post-Confrontation will be much less, so I will probably be safely within the bounds of Serious Collector for some time (unless another Confrontation comes along).

I\'ve spent far, far too much! I\'d say it\'s upwards of $10,000. But I\'ve made significantly more than that painting commissions, so it all works out in the end :)

Eesh, I thought I had it bad, but hearing from some of you, I\'d say I\'m not too bad.

Though not as much as my paintball stuff, I\'d have to say a good guess would be over $1,000 so far.

It\'s only the start too, I feel.

One mini a year.

I\'ve only spent $25 US dollars on minis this year. I generally only buy one or two minis a year. With brushes, paints, hobby lights, etc I\'ve probably spent around $700/800 Aussie dollars since returning to this hobby in 2003. So I guess you could say that I\'m a bit of a dabbler. :)

buying for gamezone comp and an avatars of war comp has probably doubled my spend in the last month alone!
i dont often buy minis as i was loathe to do so when i had hundreds sat there that i could paint though i just cleared out a load that i knew i would never paint - suprising how much value there is there!
all my hobby stuff is paid for through selling painted minis so it doesnt dip into the \'household\' cash - hell i even pay for petrol to and from GD out of it

Off your scale I\'m sorry to say.

The only fully painted army I have sits in at around £1800 as it\'s all metal. Others £200-£500.

Do the calculation for multiple multiple 1000\'s of minis as an average of £8 each. Ooops.

Oh and thats not counting the tools, storage boxs, paints, putties etc, etc, etc....

And I\'ve cut back this last year as well.

Holds up hand and shouts loudly \"I AM A MINI WHORE\"

Its true :redface: over the years and there is a lot of them (but not as many as DR and Kev :D ) I have collected more than the cost of my current mortgage and would hate to put a final figure on it all but I know for a fact that I am well over the top of the scale we are voting on.

Do I regret it?
Hell no, not one bit and I would do it all again as I enjoy collecting rather than the arguements of gaming. Like others have said though I have cut down a little this year. :rolleyes::D

A question occurs. To the people who\'ve broken the ceiling of Alchemist\'s top band, what do you reckon your proportion of painted to unpainted is like?

Eh, fair enough. Thanks for the info! I never met an insurance company that didn\'t like being given money. I guess minis aren\'t all that likely to be at risk from theft (except if they\'re taken out and about), just physical damage. I would imagine most opportunist thieves wouldn\'t realise the value of a rare mini collection.

It\'s something I\'ll look into when I get back to the UK, I think. I probably have enough rare and oop toys to justify it.

I probably should have named the following descriptors thusly:

Gamer -> Casual Gamer
Casual Collector -> Serious Gamer
Serious Collector -> Casual Collector
Bigtime Spender Collector -> Serious Collector

For \"gamer\" I was thinking more along the lines of a tabletop RPG DM, but I guess it would make more sense to refer primarily to wargamer...or wargamer and rpger being separate categories...but you get the point and the money figures are what really counts!
