Yeah really out there man- its not like there is an asteroid headed your way. You can actually do something to at least keep your head down andstay safe if not help others.
Ya\'ll stay safe and warm though- best of luck. We only get tornadoes here, fortunately not too often or too big.
Take good care Floridians:D

Hi All! I\'m new around here but just thought I\'d put in my 2 cents.

Seems to me that if you want nice weather all the time you should move to southern California. We don\'t ever get hurricanes or tornados or rain for that matter. We do get wind but if you stay by the beach, which we do have quite a few of, you can avoid most of the wind.

Hmm, would earthquakes be a deterrent? What about traffic and smog? Well, maybe not such a GREAT idea. Although earthquakes, traffic, and smog don\'t count as weather, right?

How\'s the weather?

I\'m glad all our Floridans seems to be doing OK. The last time I watched the Weather Channel, they reported Charley had so far caused 50 injuries and 3 deaths. Not a little storm to sneeze at.

Try south central PA, where I am. In winter, it\'s rare to get a lot of snow at once because most if it gets dumped on the west side of the App. Mts., we don\'t get hurricanes, or tornadoes, or earthquakes, no smog, or anything very extreme. I think I live in the most boring (weather-wise) place on the planet. :)

Wanna live here?lol

After looking at the catastrophic damage just 70 miles from our home Duende I am thinking...but I have lived here for so long it is hard to perceive such a change.
The statements here is that the trends of non hurricanes hits are changing back to the 40-50-60\'s when people did not live here so much because of the weather issues.
I think the video shows how foolish the hurricane parties mentioned above are. I would not endorse them because they continue to order body bags for these type who stayed on beachs and the elder (70\'s) who feel they do not need to leave there trailers. It took alot to get my mom out of the trailer home she lives in I think it is the fumes that contorts the brain.Kinda like the ink in Harbinger mags. Some how I do not think her attitude will be the same next week when we will have to face the next hurricane. The new depression is on the same track as Charley and is major down play at the local news stations which means trouble. They are giving us time to recover the shock and hurricane abnesia reality.
Airhead I am glad all is ok with you. It seems Orlando had alot of damage as well it is odd cause alot of people who ran from here went there and we hardly had anything and you all had much more to deal with there.

OK, I\'m back online.

We lost power shortly after my last post (about 9:00 last night) then had to listen to the radio for about an hour before it hit. The last I saw, it went about 15 miles east of me. Put a gust of 105 mph at the airport as it came across.

We regained power about 9:00 this morning. It would be spotty, on for an hour, off for another hour. The phones were also out which took care of my DSL until about 2:00 pm this afternoon.

Drove my daughter to a class she had this morning, but it was canceled due to a tree in the restraunt. Saw lots of tree branches broken off, a few trees tipped over, lots of fences blown down, but the good thing is very little home damage in my area.

I-4 was a mess this morning as all the Tampa/St. Pete people that were evacuated and came here (which ironicly put them in the path of Charlie) all tried to go home.

The worst damage I heard of was a trailer park in Punta Gorda where it came ashore. There were a lot of retirees there that did not evacuate. The sherrif\'s office and national guard (depending on which radio station you listen to) was posting a guard there as they couldn\'t get ambulances in to ferry out the bodies. Guessing about 10-20 deaths there.

We are fine here. The wind pruned a few trees for me and I lost a screen panel in the screen room. Not even an insurance claim here.

Thank all of you for your concern and prayers last night. Posting here gave me something to do instead of worrying. Also gave me and the family a few laughs.

Any one heard from Cerridwyn? It looked like it was headed her way after it left here.

Oh, I almost forgot my manners.

Welcome Hat Girl.

There is a tradition that all new female members post a pic of themselves and note if they have a significant other. (just kidding. lol)

Glad to hear you CMONers are all OK. I am still worried about a couple of friends of mine though, they went on holiday to Florida (to do diving) and I think they might still be over there! I hope they are OK too!:(

OK, Hatgirl has a VERY significan other. (Like I don\'t ;) ). Glad you are here anyway. We need some more estrogen to help keep us in line.

Becca, all are fine here. I think I lost a panel in the screen room. Not bad. Had a turtle move into the pool from down at the park. Sent him back last night. :D

UCF -
Under Construction Forever
or
U Can\'t Finish

Really, not a bad school - plumb on the other side of town from us, but not bad. If you are headed there, stop by & say hey.

I just saw a report on the damage. Yikes! glad to see you are alright. And I could see why it was not a good idea to stay in the mobile homes.
By the way, I saw Bush mentioned bringing in mobile homes as temporary housing. Is that the normal way of dealing with disasters in the US? Over here we\'d probably use army tents since we can get a larger number set up in the disaster area in a shorter time.

A little Bit of Good news

Ok I got an E-mail from Cerridwyn1st, and one from The_Deav. (Both live in Jacksonville area).

Both are Ok, but Cerridwyn1st (Mel) is trying to get in contact with her mother who lives in Bartow. ATM the phones are busy (!) and Mel\'s still trying to get through.
Hopefully She\'ll be able to update us all when things are a little bit stable over there.

Thank (insert diety here) all CMONers seemed to have weathered the storm. Hope Ceridwynn gets in touch with her mom and all is well.

TO answer the question, yes! They use a lot of temporary trailers here in emergency isituations. It speeds the clean up. YOu don\'t have to worry about taking them down. You just let the next storm do that for you :D

I got an email from Cerridwyn myself. She\'s trying to get out of town for GenCon. (lucky girl :( )

Life is trying to get back to normal here. Lots more trees & fences down on this side of town (at work near airport). Pine trees snapped off about 4-6 feet up just like a toothpick. Oaks - about half of them are tipped over like bad game scenery. Couple of windows out in the office - lobby & upstairs. The false enclosure on the roof for the air conditioners came off.

Orlando estimates over $1 billion in damage. Most of that will be paid by private citizens. The emergency services came through and cut the limbs out of the power lines and out of the streets, but the tree is the landowner\'s responsibility (from what I can gather currently). With a $1000 deductable, if you had a tree down in your yard, it is not worth filing a claim and risking getting dropped next year. You simply pay $100 or $200 to get the guys to cut it up and haul it off for you.

Family\'s fine, thanks for everyone\'s concern

I haven\'t had a chance to read through the whole thread - it has been a busy morning at work.

I got throught to my brother earlier today via cell phone. My family is in Polk County, an area just a few miles from Lakeland International Airport, where they are flying in a lot of the relief for Tampa.

The eye of the storm went over Alturas, about six miles from where my mom and next youngest brother live. They all made it through OK.

Power is back up in the neighborhood where my mom and brother live, but they expect parts of the nearest town to take up to ten days to get all the power back on.

There was a house for sale in my brother Ben\'s neighborhood. Oak trees on both ends of the house came down, doing severe damage to the house, but no people because it was empty.

I didn\'t have any problems here at all. Other than a momentary flicker in the power Friday night, you\'d never have known there was a major storm here. That, and lots of rain.

On Thursday last week, a spin-off tornado from Bonnie trounced a couple houses a few miles from my workplace, but we were OK other than that.

I skimmed back a bit and it seems The Hedge Wizard and TAB Studio made it through OK. I was a litttle worried, since I know they\'re in Tampa.

Weird - some members of my family used to have a trailer in Punta Gorda. I think they sold it a few years ago. If they didn\'t, they wouldn\'t be there this time of year - they\'re snowbirds, only there in the winter.
