I...can\'t paint...

I\'ve never been good at painting, especially at blending two colours smoothly, some colours look thick on different surfaces, and that NMM effect looks amazing, however I have no idea about how to paint like that. And I hate to paint skeletons! They never turn out the GW way!

Practice, that\'s all it takes.

Well, that and a steady stream of \"I know I can do this.\"

And patience. Even Jennifer Haley had to start somewhere, and it all starts by picking up a brush, some paint, and learning as you go along.

And never hesitate to ask questions. That\'s what communities like this and reapermini.com/forum are for.

I think we have all reached that point at some time or another. The key is PUT DOWN THE MINI AND WALK AWAY!!! Spend some time looking at other minis, reading all of the excellent tutorials here and at other sites. Get inspired to try new things. And heck with my old eyes a magnifying visor helped me see the details immensely.

Give it some time. My painting has evolved quite a lot in the last year and I have had 2 month spells where I haven\'t painted at all, just did some reading and studying of other peoples ideas!

You\'ll get there and remember the GW way isn\'t the only way, the \"your way\" you develop could be even more satisfying!

Actually, the firsty time Jen picked up a brush (at age 3) she painted a perfect 1:72 scale replica of the cistine chapel with a 4\" paste brush.

For the rest of us, practice is good. My other actual tip is that you should always try and paint something you really WANT to paint. Churning out 90 tyranids gaunts isn\'t going to motivate you to really impress, but painting that new addition to your favourite necromunda gang can become really absorbing.

now that would be a great idea!.....everyone was once a wet-behind-the-ear newbie with a paint brush in one hand and a mini in the other.

anyways, those advices given are indeed sound...sometimes, a certain mini isn\'t a good start, sometimes a style (eg. GW) isn\'t your style...

anyways, learn, experiment and try again and again...practice makes perfect here...it\'s an evolving art, not a mathematical formula...

my own experience in painting includes:
(1) Stripping a mini and painting it over and over again more than 20 times? That was a mini of arwen mounted on a horse...believe it or not, it was the face only....then the horse (and stripped everything)...then stupid frodo (he looks like a frog)....

(2) didn\'t know how to do blacklining and had to practice on a whole regiment of goblins again and again....

(3) painted gem on paper first....

(4) copied shamelessly from others...take a mini from a article/tutorial, buy that mini, and follow that article/tutorial step-by-step guide...

read and see...try and practice...that\'s the key...

can\'t paint

have a ceremony, burn your current brush, burn your worst mini, refresh your karma.

make it a point to say this is where your going to get better. have extra Nids and stuff to work on, get brush paste, clean your brushes, change your water every time you paint. little habbits will help.

most of all don\'t take the \"Stuffy Good Ol Boyz\" Club here to seriously.

You know what else?

Get good paints,

Learn how to thin them properly,

Get good brushes.

Read EVERY FORUM on this site.

Learn how to take proper pictures (a quick look at my few postings will show I have not acheived the final of my own rules).

I have painted for over 25 years and it took this site (last year) to teach me those rules. I am no Golden Daemon Painter but the change in my abilities since I did all of those (except the pics) have friends and family startled....

You remember painting with testors, pactra military, humbrol, railroad, etc.? Licking brushes after they had been cleaned in turpentine, mineral spirits or worse?

Can\'t wait til christmas. Hoping for a decent digi-cam so I can start improving my photog skills and get ranked.

I can only dream...

You know a long while ago, my wife sat down with me at the painting table and painted almost that same exact orc as Jennifer Haley did, almost the same quality also.

Since then, I have been encouraging her to paint more and keep practising (in secret hopes her skill would rise steadily) but alas she grew tired of it. DAMN DAMN DAMN....

Ah, what could have been. lollol

@Mouse....I can\'t exorcise Finn all by myself, much too powerful... maybe someday Reverend will return to lend a hand.

Dude, who says they have to look a certain way? As someone who has been doing this hobby for dogs years, the best piece of advice I can give is do your best and keep trying new things - in other words practice, practice, practice. If you\'re happy with them and the mini is your best effort then who gives a shit what everyone else thinks?

The most important piece of advice I ever read was \"Thin down your paints\". It\'s funny cuz it\'s also the one you read the most but I never really did it I just kept thining my paints but only so they would be a litlle more liquide then coming out of the pot, then one day after not having improved for about 2 months I diluted my paint quit a lot, and then Miracle!!! My mini was way better then befor :flip:
Moral of the story try thining your paints, taking care of your brushes might help too. Good Luck
