=I= scale Death Company Space Marine

Greetings, a few months since my last submission here, but I have been working on a big project.
This Death Company marine is a conversion of the Artemis model from GWs inquisitor range. I wanted to do a Black space marine with lots of interesting detailing - so the Death Company came into my mind. Also, having discussed this particular troop type with John Blanche a few years back I really wanted to have a go at doing complex Death Company model.
The model was painted in a classic pallette of black and red with the odd metallics and white for contrast. Stylistic I went for a mix of classic 'eavy metal style edge highlights in combination with various kinds of battle-damage plus subtle shading of the black using deep brown glazes.
I entered the marine into the Open Competition in GDUK2010, where he became a finalist but failed to place in the top 3. Congratz to the winners though - and especially to Martin Footitt who took Gold in the category. Well-deserved.

Anyway, here is the model. I hope you like him.

Very nice work, I like the battle damage- effectively done with metallics, and refreshing to see someone take time with them as NMM is everywhere these days. Though if it is indeed NMM you fooled the hell out of me.

Great efford...:)... Love it once again, must have been an awful lot of work...

Why didn´t you enter it into Large Scale...?... Not allowed to...?...

The Open Competition is the toughest of them all since some of GW´s Aces compete there... It was a very hard Category...

I know -I won it back in 1998. :)
But that said, I thought I had fine odds in this category, and I have wanted to enter this category for a few years and now I had to try.

That's a good marine! Congrats for entering in Open, even though you didn't get a demon, it's one of the hardest category.

I'll apologise for not being able to offer any constructive citicism. I really like this mini. The idea and the execution are briliant. What I like most is the battle damage and the fact that it's not overdone. I'm used to seing Death Company minis with too much decorations or poses that are dynamic to the point of being unrealistic but this one has avoided these comon pitfalls. Congrats! :)

@Brother Captain:
Thanks for the words about the marine. You are vey close to the reasoning behind the way I thought about the armour and decoration. Since the model is rather large, the bulk and mass of the marine shows better and I thought that this was very important. Therefore I tried to emphasize the armour rather than cover it in detail. For instance I went for a simple blood drop and some rivets on the chestplate, since this would put focus on the armour but still add that touch in detail. I also worked with red rope as on the new Death COmpany sprue. This adds a nice contrast between the structure of the rope and the black and damaged armour plating. Also, the ropes are ideal for hanging little details onto. :)

Fantastic job, really nice weathering and a good balance of detail. The base sets it off perfectly! Sorry its not more helpful and I cannot offer any more thoughts, but aside from not seeing anything that is wrong or could be improved, I don't think I'm in a position to be too technically critical myself gven my own ability. The category must certainly have been tough for someone like yourself to not get a placing.Well done to everyone who entered the event by the way, I may summon the courage myself one day...

Forgot to say that I LOVE the Doll on the base... Wow... So beautiful...

What is it about...?... ^_^... I really adore it...
Well, you got both the broken doll and the hourglass - symbols of frailty of life.

If you notice the way the closeup picture of the details has been composed there is a skull behind the doll body acting head for the broken doll, while the actual doll head looks towards to hourglass which is broken and spills sand... onto the sandy landscape. Somehow it seemed a fitting sinister detail for the back of the huge marine.
