@ Red Dawn, Louisiana has over 3/4ths of it\'s National Guard in state, not in Iraq. Blanco waited to call them in way too late.
As for the Scietific Journal, We here have been knowing what would happen for decades.
It is common knowledge that NO is under sea level, it is also common knowledge that the levee\'s would only withstand a category 3 hurricane.
The levee\'s that broke were never slated to be strengthened in any federal assistance program, the engineers had said they were OK.
People live in NO because they want to, the cost of living is much higher in NO than in most of the state.
As of Tuesday evening after Katrina, the Superdome was still able to be reached by car. The people there chose to stay, rather than just walk out to Gretna, or the West Bank. They chose to rely on the government before relying on themselves. If this doesn\'t tell you a thing about NO people I don\'t know what will
They chose to stay not knowing when they would be rescued, rather than make a little effort and save themselves.
After Hurrican Ivan, it was determined under the circumstances then that the local government could not evacuate the city.
In the time since then, nothing has been done, nothing, to rectify the situation.
Or even if you couldn\'t evacuate where were the safe shelters?
Where was the stockpiled canned goods, the bottled water to take care of those they couldn\'t evacuate since they knew they couldn\'t.
Nowhere.
Local and state government have been gambling for the past 30 years that a Category 4 or higher would not hit New Orleans, and have been spending that money elsewhere.
They bet on the wrong horse.
And as to Bush not jumping in, it was a no win situation. If he had the liberals would be screaming how he violated state rights, since he didn\'t they\'re screaming about how he didn\'t violate state rights.

Actually, I\'ve always thought it would be better if politicians refrained from visiting such places. All they do is draw hundreds of emergency services people away from doing what they should be doing in order to provide security, etc. for them. Of course, if they DON\'T show up, the oposition insists it\'s because they are heartless and uncaring.
I think that this or any President - as well as Congressman, Senators, general hangers-on, etc - would be doing everyone a major service to just issue a statement that they are intentionally NOT going to the disaster area so as to stay out of the way of the serious work going on there. THe same would apply, several times over, for Jesse Jackson, musicians, film stars, etc.

Bush has never hesitated to stick the federal nose into state and local business when its suited him.
However, much as I disagree with many of Bush\'s views and policies, I think he\'s taking an unwarented amount of stick over Huricane Katrina as a dual consequence of growing unhappiness with Iraq and people blaming Bush for Mike Brown\'s failings.
Of course I\'m twice transplanted foreigner with no polical science or sociology training, so my opinion is worth what you paid for it.

ps. I had \"GW\", for George Walker, instead of Bush in the above email and then decided it could be misread and whatever else we accuse Games Workshop of, blaming a natural disaster on them is going a bit far.

Fact: 100% of all Long Islanders a) used to own a boat, or b) currently own a boat, or c) Will own a boat, or d) have a family member with a boat so they don\'t need to buy one. I suppose this comes from living in a location that is never more then 15 miles from water.
I used to own a boat, now I just go out on my wife\'s cousin\'s boat; it\'s a lot cheaper that way.

I can\'t blame him for the Hurricane, but the fact that he appointed a buddy of his with ZERO experience to head FEMA, the agency responsible for handling these type of crisis is definately very good finger pointing material.

Sorry, this sort of \'good ol\' boy\' political job giving is pure bullshit! Just look at what George\'s brother did to the Fedral Reserve Bank when he was put in charge of it by his father. People should be appointed KEY positions based on their experience, not WHO THEY KNOW!
