the background for Indy was based on the old pulp comic/stories of the 20s/30s, which happens to be when the first 3 films were based (early 30s I believe)...
at the time, high adventure type stuff was popular.

THere is a particular story/character indy is based on but forgot which it is...read it long ago.

Lucas was saying how, since he based the concept on those pulp stories, he would always advance it with the times, if he ever helped make a 4th film (this was long ago).

So now, they did...the thing is...it\'s in the late 50s/60s.

Pulp stories in that time period had a major shift...you got it..UFOs, Sci-Fi, the start in some cases of fantasy...and comics were big.

So he wanted to advance his concept of Indy/pulp comic hero, with the times as well.

That was his intention apparently...so from his own character design point of view...Indy 4 makes perfect sense.

if i had know about that before hand i might not have been so critical of the movie.
i did like the very first part with the area 51 and roswell(and the test rocket :))
although the rest at the time seemed over the top. ill have to see that again with this different perspective.

yeah i thought they did the russians right although the russians in the film seemed to have a unlimited axcess to money and transportation hence the cool speedracer deforester machine lol and the big transport plane with giant russian star (howd FBI miss that!!lol)

i can only hope if they make more that they keep the stars and bring back rhys davis.

What I don\'t get is all the analysis of the movie.
You are forgetting one thing Its Entertainment not a world shattering attempt to modify our understanding of human emotions or relationships.
Just 120+ minutes of Fun.
Looking forward to seeing it myself, in any format.

theres the issue
some parts werent quite fun but rather .....
questionable ???. like seeing a alien for the first time your brain tumbles over itself to replay the instant to verify what was going on.
you\'ll see what i mean.
although your right i take my movies way to seriously. i figure anything i have to pay 25 bucks for (me and the wife) better be something i really enjoy.:D

I thought it was a great popcorn flick. My biggest problem was not wanting to think of the hero of my favorite childhood movies as getting old. Once I got over that, I enjoyed the movie. I really liked the way they tied the father-son relationship between Ford and Labeouf to Connery and Ford. I also think while some scenes were big stretches of reality, (lead lined fridge, “Tarzan” scene) they still fit well with the “pulp genre” of the movie.

i rather enjoyed this film.....it was great.....some bits a little unbelievable....like ford swinging on his whip at 66 made me wonder why he didnt break a hip when he landed.

and the other that got to me was lebouf swinging like tarzan......why lucas has to destroy movies by doing this little homage just keeps ticking me off.

the ending also seemed a bit anticlimactic...i definitely remember the endings of all the others, but this one left me wanting a bit more.

all in all a great film and better than temple of doom

but will never beat crusade imho.

On a slightly different note, I saw Night In The Museum the other night, and I honestly enjoyed it a hell of a lot. I laughed out loud a good few times. I still find Ricky Gervais hard to watch though.

Anyhoo, tomorrow is Indy day for me :D

I saw it yesterday (memorial day) and I have to confess I did enjoy it, but as I was walking away I couldnt shake the feeling that CGI is kind of ruining movies. I dont mean its all bad, but with this Indiana Jones it seemed like there was alot of unnecessary CGI that had no purpose, case in point, the CGI groundhogs at the very start of the movie.
I dont mean to digress, but to mean it just seems like CGI has made it so movies have to be massive in scale, like Indy IV, when their predecessor were not (think of the chase scenes from Last Crusade and compare to those in Crystal skull).

I thought she looked exactly the way she should have looked. Someone who maybe didn\'t have an easy life, or at least not a dull one. A bit too much sun and wind but still a very attractive woman for her age.

I loved her tree stunt in the Russian schwimwagen. That was epic, you could see why Indy would still be a sucker for her :)

Overall
Pros:
Harrison Ford - no complaints at all
Cate Blanchett - so menacingly loony (all the main actors, even Shia, did at least a decent job)
Classic Indy flavor dungeon runs and chase scenes
Period-appropriate \"red scare\" subplot
Freaky ant scene
Great ancient architecture

Cons:
A little too sentimental at times
Those poor Indians didn\'t stand a chance :(
The giant ants should have skeletonized someone
Really dumb \"Tarzan\" scene - thanks Lucas!
Totally nonsensical use of \"magnetism\" in the warehouse
The bad guys would have \"lost\" even without Indy\'s intervention (due to Spalko\'s grave miscalculation about the nature of the \"power\")

i laughed that everyone kept theirs guns but the gunpower floated through the air.
and eveytime after that with the skull.
very selective magnets.
oh and the snake ropelol
one minutes its a snake next its a rope that looks like a snake. :(
and the car landing on the other car and not hurting anyone.
yeah they disneyed it up
oh well still a indianna movie:drunk:

yeah, you know looking back at it, it wasnt that bad. the part that sticks in my head the most though is the graveyard, on a CLIFF in a THUNDERSTORM at NIGHT in the RAIN with crazy NINJA things in it. THAT was weird, but cool. what i dont get, is the guys stuck in the walls. how do they live in there????
