Initial vote

What\'s the concensus on your initial vote on your own posted mini?

Do you give yourself a higher score than you know you deserve (only 1-2 points higher) thinking that at least you\'ll get one vote that\'s higher than the average? (or sometimes - it\'s the best you can do so you feel it\'s a 10 or a 9 to reflect that)

or

Do you vote what you really, really think it is worth?

I\'m noticing that people kinda vote in a herd. That is, if a figure is doing well, then mostly people want to help it - like if it\'s 7.7 I personally have noticed that I catch myself leaning towards 8 rather than 7. or conversely if it\'s 7.1 I lean towards 7 rather than 8. Man\'s quest for order I guess . . . note that\'s not true of me all the time but I have noticed the phenomena on occasion. And I think the motivation is that if the figgie starts out high people will roughly follow suit and lean in the direction it\'s heading.

I also noticed that if you give it a high score that is clearly undeserved (3-4 points higher) then people are VERY willing to knock you lower than it\'s probably worth. As if you want to knock some of the arrogance out of the poster, teach him a lesson, give him a 4 instead of the 6

ah . . typical 11 pm rambling as I scan the recent adds this evening . . .

I tend to vote 7 or 8 on most of my minis. I\'d like to give them a vote of 9 or 10 coz I think they\'re worth it (to me at least), but I\'m sure most folks would want to knock such high scores down. So, not wishing to have a load of 5 and 6 votes (or less!) given to my minis I go for the more reserved 7 or 8.

When I vote on minis I try not to be influenced by the rating, but it is hard. I have left comments on some minis where my vote is considerably lower than the general concensus but fortunately haven\'t been flamed for it.

I usually tag mine a six or a seven, but they always appear as \"Average vote 5\" until someone else votes.

Does my vote actually make any difference?

I\'ve always left it blank but I think it defaults to 6 because that\'s what is always posted just after I submit it.
I don\'t vote on my own. Not for any real reason, I just don\'t.

I usually rate my own minis with my average score rounding down.

I liked it best when I wasn\'t required to vote on the minis I posted, but then again, if you start low, you know at least that it can only climb after that.

I think the initial score is the score you give it, minus 1. So I alway vote 1 higher than I think it\'s worth ;) And I do try to give a fair score to my own work, using what I see here as the benchmark. I figure, people will vote as they do, and there\'s probably no point in trying to influence that.

I vote what I think it\'s worth, rounding up to the nearest point.
(I hope they aren\'t deducting a point from that)

As for voting based on the current average, I have the \"hide scores\" set to yes so I\'m not influenced by what others vote.

Not really, I would say your first vote will have some influence negatively or positively on the first few votes, but after that it\'s all about the average. What is one vote when averaged against dozen or even hundreds of votes. At the end of the day the majority will win out, I guess it\'s the Law of Averages......lol

What I meant was, I vote for MY mini using MY average, that is, the score of my top five minis that have at least 50 votes each. Not to be confused with the method I use to vote other people\'s stuff ;)

Sorry for the confusion. I understood what you meant. The second sentence you quoted from me was more in reference to what Sturmhalo and Flashman said about being influenced by the current score when voting on someone else\'s mini.

ya, I tried the Hide Vote option and it drove me nuts - when I\'m in Vote mode it\'s great (looking at one page/fig at a time) but the other half of my time I spend cruising the filters - Most Recent from All. Then these votes are hidden so I don\'t know what to zero in on when I\'m checking out the new stuff and looking for inspiration (the thumbnails are hard to go by).
Also when you look at your own minis your score is hidden! So I turned the dang thing off. It\'s too clunky to toggle off and on easily given the 2-3 times a day I addictively pop in to see what\'s up and what\'s new.

No Such Agency, are you sure it automatically subtracts one? I think the horizontal 1-10 bubble selection is confusing - the bubble is on the wrong side of the number so I always think it\'s on one number higher than I selected. I could be wrong . . .

Originally when I started out, I\'d give myself an inital vote of 1 to be fair.... Whch was pretty stupid. Then I got smarter and voted what I felt like the mini deserved. But even that throws me a bit because I always think I should vote to the left of the number, and it\'s at the right. I lose at least 2 points like this for every 5 minis.. it\'s depressing. Recently, I\'ve started out with 10.. Not that I\'m saying that it\'s my best or THE best, I just think that there\'s no way that anyone on this site could get a 10 if they voted 5 on theirs. Of course, there is backlash from this for some stupid reason. At one time one mini went from 9.4 to 7.7 in two votes...But people giving ones is another story entirely.

I hate Nurgle. Everytime a paint a mini of his I get sick. That has nothing to do with this topic, it just needed to be said. :p

my first vote is always a 7 because so the site give me a 6 and that\'s what my minis at least deserve i think.

I don\'t think your initial vote is listed as one less! I\'ve posted some pics recently and they\'ve all been posted with exactly the rating I gave them. Some have rocketed up after only a few votes! Bet they\'ll drop rapidly though when the old 6/7 brigade get onto them though. :~(

A point on insane voting as well. I saw a mini today that had been painted by a 5 year old (honest, but didn\'t note the users ID. It was some sort of Pegasus/unicorn by Reaper and was bright pink!). To be honest it was poor by our standards but it was pretty good for a five year old kid. I think it was rated as 5! And upon reading the comments all bar one had rated it anywhere between 6 and 10! Absolute insanity! All the votes were swayed by the fact it was good for a five year old! Yet they were rating it the same as some of the best work on CMON! I rated it as 2 which I thought was fair and commented that that was not meant to offend and that it was damn good for a little kid. But still, it proves how subjective voting can be.

Personally I\'d prefer to post images without having to give them a score. If you leave it blank, the default setting is 6, so I usually start mine off with a 6 or 7. In one case, I started one off with an 8 because it had taken a perfect score in a local contest. However, local standards are not CMON standards and the score quickly plummeted. I also started my CMON contest entry out with what I thought was fair for my level of painting. I guess that set me up for some really low votes because it went from a 7 to a 4.7 in only three votes. (Would have loved to hear comments from those voters!)

One thing that I absolutely will not do is to vote on my own minis after filling in the circle for \"what would you rate this picture?\" That just doesn\'t seem right to me.

BTW, I was one of those who gave the pink pegasus a higher score with comments. Admittedly I did it because the girl was 5 and I felt it was pretty good for a kid. And I was hoping to encourage her to keep painting.

Me = idiot!

<Nelson>Haha!</Nelson> Oh my god, you\'re right, I think I\'ve been checking the wrong boxes when I submit a mini, and voting 1 less that I think I am! And my \"voting 1 higher\" happens to just be actually checking the right circle... Yeesh. So much for \"attention to detail\" :)

I was temp[ted to use the \"hide score\" option, but I do tend to check what the score is, after I\'ve decided but before I\'ve actually voted. Just to keep track of how my standards correlate to the community average here.

charity votes

I\'m not fond of the charity votes. That said, I will sometimes take a figure\'s story into account when voting. I don\'t recall what I voted on the unicorn, but I guarantee it was not a 10. Then again my scale is slightly more generous across the board than the average here.

What really irritates me is when bad minis get voted up because they are bad. A joke is a joke, but I\'d still vote what I think it\'s worth. Flash is a good example. I think it was Zaphod put it up for a joke and it kept getting 8s. Crappyminiman is another such example.

When I first started here my initial votes were higher than what my miniatures\' ratings turned out to be. Hopefully I have since learned to be more objective and vote appropriately. I now use the same method mentioned above of using my overall rating average, rounded up. I think anyone giving themselves a 10 when the work is not at that level (and there are very few) deserves to be shot down. And the high vote/joke mini thing was just on my mind as well - the invisible frodo popped up when I was browsing and it has a 8.9 or something like that. It is a damn nice base, and a funny idea, but come on...

hmmm . . . Anyone notice that effort alone seems to be rewarded? Like conversions: just by attempting one seems to give that mini a tad higher score than one would think it should garner. I\'m not entirely opposed to this per se but it seems inconsistent to me. (And don\'t flood me with examples to the contrary - I know they exist but aren\'t you just a tad more inclined to go up a point if a weopon was replaced or a cloak added or a head was swapped out?

Also I notice that groups of minis seem to be a tad better than any one of the minis in the composition would get - be it a warband or a diorama. I like seeing them frankly but when I do look at the individual members of that group I\'m often considerably less impressed than the status quo.

I also am humbugged a bit about hyperinflating a score because, say, it was painted by a five year old. As it relates to the children, I can not think of a more nobler act then to get the kids involved in this wonderful, relaxing and creative hobby - but aren\'t you setting them up to fail once they hit the real world of competition? Arent they less inclined to improve if they achieve high scores unwittingly? Sometimes I feel really strongly about that and other times not - it\'s been easy just to sit on the fence but I do think it\'s a bit of a disservice to those who really want to measure or test themselves against real painters. know what I mean?

Converted figures rated higher? Nope, my experience is it\'s just the opposite My figure with the highest amount of conversion did significantly less well than the same figure with much less. I will admit that I\'ve seen some high numbers on some heavily converted figures. But they\'ve also been painted real well. (All of the Inquisitor figures by Johnny KS come to mind)
