Of course people are going to twist religion around for power, profit and other forms of personal gain. That\'s part of the destructive fallen nature of man.

I rarely take anything I see/say on the Interweb seriously, but I agree with what Shawn is saying here. The faith itself, and its actual teachings if you take the time to read them and understand them, are really fantastically altruistic.

Being nice to your friends, neighbors, and enemies alike? Turning away from destructive habits and dedicating yourself to the welfare of others? These are hardly things worth mocking.

Many authority figures have tried to manipulate religion, and they deserve what they get for it. But this thread is getting way out of hand. Honest, well-meaning Christians shouldn\'t be lumped in with dictators and charlatans.

But hey, everyone gets to make their own decisions, just remember that some day you might be held accountable for them (in this life, after, or both!).

Written in a way that I couldn\'t, thank you! I agree with all of those points.

The what now? Fallen? What\'s that all about? Is there PROOF that we\'re \'fallen\'? Fallen from what?

Certainly, but those things don\'t need a religious base.

This is YOU projecting your view onto others. It\'s meaningless to me and in my view pretty much sums up a heck of a lot of religious doctrine: it\'s about fear and paradox.

The only way I\'m going to be held accountable is if the plods catch me doing something illegal or I do something stupid like molest the local farmer\'s favourite ewe....

I'm actually a man!
Hang on,....did i read that right.

Didi the vatican guy state, in writing, that angels are in fact other forms of life...i.e. aliens.

If thats the case, thats the church contradicting itself....AGAIN! lol

they shouldn\'t but only eternal damnation is enough to scare some people to being nice. it\'s also a handy crutch, knowing that if a loved one dies, they are with god, or that if something bad happens, it is the will of god and things will be ok in the end

the basic ideals of most religions are pretty sound but as has been mentioned, people often turn them to their own ends.

also take a look at the problem they had in brazil lately. a 9y/o girl is raped and becomes pregnant with twins. with the size of her uterus as it is, one would split it and kill her, so the doc (soundly) gave her an abortion. the church said that was a sin and has excommunicated everyone involved in the abortion, except for the girl due to her age. now i am sure that this isn\'t representitive of catholosism at it\'s finest but if it is, then that sort of religion can go fuck itself sorry bout the language but if you can\'t swear about somehting like that, what can you?

anyway back to the article, it\'s the comment by the creationist that makes me laugh. scares me that there are still creationists out there tbh

Hmm, lets see
God is not human so, by definition, an
alien
Responsible for the big bang, okay as God appears to operate in a different dimension.
Made the earth in 6 days; well one day here is 24 hours as we measure it, a day on Jupiter is about 9 of our hours. How long are God\'s days?
Religions - all of them; sets of rules made by man to control man. Nothing to do with faith in a greater being.
Oh, and JC, son of God concieved by a virgin. Sounds to me like an alien version of IVF to create a presence on earth that is recognisable to humankind.
is there other life out there? Damn right and they\'ve seen the mess we\'ve made and had the good sense to keep clear.

Was that last post sarcastic enough? No matter how hard I tried, I couldn\'t get the sarcasm to drip off of the screen.

Religion causes problems accross the world, and from your original post I can see your view... As I share your view I believe all it does is causes conflict when discussed in any open session

if there is any intelligent life on any other planet in our universe... and \"they\" come to meet us... we are pretty much screwed.... seriously we got nukes and crazy weapons, and all these things and we have no clue about the universe yet.... so if they have the ability to come \"visit\" us... that means they are years ahead of nukes and bombs and pretty much we will be slaves

or we can trade them george bush and call it even

Here\'s one view of religion by James, the band:

You may say I am cynical, but I say man is flawed
He has a vague memory of life before some fall
Behaving like a reptile, but talks of walking tall
If god is in his image, the almighty must be small

God only knows

Swaggart has been caught with his trousers round his knees
After damning me and you to hell for eternity
Sex and power and money is the prayer of these priests
They bribe their way past heaven\'s gates and steal a set of keys

God only knows

My guru has been sleeping with adepts and with sheep
While I was fucking celibate, self-righteous in belief
Yesterday he was god, now he is a creep
We fell upon each other starving for belief

God only knows

I speak in the name of god
I speak in the name of that
white haired old man in the clouds
Always a man
Dispensing lightening justice from his fingertips
Watching you every second of the day
Just waiting for you to f*ck up
I speak in the name of God
I\'m his intermediary
I\'m a Mollah, I\'m a Priest, I\'m a Vicar
If you want to go to God
You have to come through me

Is heaven full, oh lord, of these babbling preachers and
God-fearing biggots
All these sef-rightious, self-appointed prophets
because if so:-
I know where I\'d rather be
Away from this cacophony
Away from this cacophony
God only knows
God only knows
God only knows

...

Apologies re swearing, but it\'s poetry really. That covers it.

I read this from beginnign to end, and the part that bothered me wasn\'t even the
religious stuff. That, I\'ve pretty much come to expect from religion, no matter
the denomination.
What rather bothered me was in the second \'speakers\'\' section, where he
states so emphatically that any life we might find would be far advanced in
comparison to our own.

Nonsense. As the \'conditions\' required to create life are so specific, other worlds
might not have met those conditions until long after Earth did.

I think it\'s pure arrogance to assume we could possibly know anything about what
might be out there, while we\'re still in our proverbial infancy as a species.

I\'m with Calvin and Hobbes on the idea of extra-terrestrial life. The surest proof that
it\'s out there is that it hasn\'t tried to
contact us, yet.

Luke 6:22-23
22 “Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man. 23 “Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.

Ephesians 3:19
...you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
I\'ve actually been touched by this...it\'s real, people.

Hebrews 11:6
Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him.
Really...what\'s to lose by seeking Him?

Hebrews 10:23-24
23Let us continue to hold firmly to the hope that we confess without wavering, for the one who made the promise is faithful. 24And let us continue to consider how to motivate one another to love and good deeds,

Luke 6:35-36
35 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. 36 “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

yeah but simply statistically speaking it\'s more likely that they will be more advanced. like grabbing a 12y/o and a 19y/o and asking them to grow a beard, yeah it\'s possible that the 12y/o could (i have a mate who went through puberty ridiculously early and had a full beard buy 14!), it;s more likely that the 19y/o would be better
