I hope you didn´t find my topic provoking. The reason i brought this up is that i´m a member of another forum where we discuss ancient philosophy, mainly atomism. However, due to a number of posts from visitors, we have seen a wide range of subjects such as \"what to eat at McDonalds\", \"Boiled or fried potatoes\", \"Who would you sleep with on Ally McBeal\" and so on. My personal opinion is that \"anything goes\" (to quote Feyerabend). However, a lot of people seem to think that the forum will \"water down\" and become less of a meeting place for the subject. Hence, the term \"irrelevant\" (as inapropriate as it might sound) could refer to the one intended subject of the forum.
The problem that arises here is that of the following:
Is there just ONE intended subject - or is there a pluralism. Did people come to the public square in ancient Greece to discuss ONE thing?
Still we face the danger of scaring off some really serious painters if we discuss stuff not related to the hobby... Or?
That might be the point of a \"General Discussion\" forum as opposed to, say, \"Painting and Conversions\". If we limited talk in General Discussion to painting stuff, it\'d bear an uncanny resemblance to our current \"Painting and Conversions\". In short, if someone doesn\'t want to have general discussions, then
maybe the General Discussion forum isn\'t for him - much like someone who can\'t give a crap about CAV will never set foot in the CAV forum.
General Discussion does not prevent, impair, or otherwise disrupt \"serious\" painting discussions, since they take place in a whole other forum. Therefore, I really fail to see a problem.
And I\'ll have a Big Mac, fried potatoes, and Lucy Liu please.
