Basically the title coz i\'m starting to try and do some freehand.
Is all freehand done with a pencil?

You can do on a white undercoat. I prefer to just paint streight on and correct it with the base colour underneath.
it\'s not really something you can do overnight though, a bit of practice is all you need

I have never EVER heard of anyone using a pencil. Thin paintbrush is the general method, but überthin pens can be used too in certain situations I think, you could try these ones.

The pens seem to be more trouble than they are worth....
The nibs clog up, they don\'t always flow correctly...they are hard to draw on a 3-d surface. The colors are too shiney and not rich enough.
I\'m no expert with a brush, but I think you have better control and you get better results.

Bill i\'m gunna be tough competition next year in youngbloods so watch out. I\'m a bit like you i haven\'t tried nmm yet. But i think i could do it and i hope to win a demon next year too. I\'m gathering knowledge to beat u. Right rant over.

I will sometimes draw a stick figure with pencil on the surface just to keep my proportions consistent when I paint with a brush. I don\'t bother with any detail - literally stick figures.

For things like freehand, sometimes it\'s easier to do the area AROUND what you are trying to draw...
(I know what I mean in my head!!)
Ie. If you are wanting to do a few thin lines in order to do a pattern, sometimes if you can\'t manage to keep the lines as thin as you want - or a uniform thickness, simply go back over their edges with the underlying base colour ...

I haven\'t used a pencil yet but i suppose i haven\'t gone too complex with my freehand style yet either. I imagine lines running along the area and then place points in various places where i want the design to be. For some stuff i see the designs as abstract blocks of shapes which i narrow down to simple shapes. Always with very thin paint or ink.
