This may not be important to other countries. But I think they are a piece of Americana.

Maybe it was the fact they were selling CDs for 20 bucks a pop.

Exactly! I won\'t shed a tear for these types of stores going under. I hate to see people lose jobs, that\'s for sure, but these stores greed went a long way in folks wanting to use online services.
Slit their own throats, I think.

I loathe musicians who complain about theft of IP while churning out crummy music.
Money changing hands isn\'t necessary for illegality. I found that I did not purchase as much music during the napster era, since I had a ready source for just about anything I wanted to listen to.... sort of like radio on demand.Originally posted by supervike
I had \'Napster\' back when it was illegal. Hell, I didn\'t know. But, I downloaded several songs from bands I hadn\'t heard of, and bought their albums if I liked it. I seriously doubt I would do that today.Originally posted by philologus

Speaking of which, what made Napster illegal anyhow? Just a group of friends sharing music. What is wrong with that? No money ever changed hands.

Equating each downloaded song with a lost sale shows an epic lack of understanding for the real issues at hand.

That is a very good point. Most of the songs I downloaded I would have never bought anyhow. So they really lost no money from me. It was basically just free airplay for them.
Great point. I remember the loudest voice was the ones in the money stream: the publishers and the RIAA. Singer/songwriter Janis Ian had some great thoughts on the subject during the debate. I used to get quite a kick out of her ability to cut through the crap.Originally posted by philologus
I just want to make clear: I have never downloaded any music, illegal or legal. I just don\'t need it that badly. My beef was against \"artists\" (who in the past would have been the ones complaining about \"sell-outs, and \"artistic integrity\" as though they had no concern for the market) complaining about IP theft. Particularaly when they suck for the most part.
