Jericho\'s Dark Angel (and various side-projects) project log

The feathers don\'t look their best from this low angle kind of shot, they\'re falling over the edge into what will be lava :D Looka better from above I swear!

And, yes, he\'s supposed to get me some Termis if I get him done on time lol

Quick update: Base almost done. Need to finalize the red glow on the underside of the feathers sooner or later.

Fallen0002.jpg

Next up? Probably the black armor... so much black armor. Might just do the legs first so I can quickly get into the groove and try some P3 gold colors. Then just the upper body and he\'s practically done already... lol

Ooh just had an idea for the sword actually... idea to reflect his two-sided nature. Keep it mostly black (necessary for a Heavenfall blade) but hilight towards the tip in green on one side, and have more of an inner red glow on the other side. Could be fun.

please let me know if youe metallics also suck, because every single one ive bought the metallic flake stick to the bottom and no matter how many times you mix/shake/stir they always seperate the next day..and no matter how much i thin i either get thick paint or paint that covers about as well as blood red over black

the colours themselves are awesome, i just cant stand the poor quality

loving the model, base is very cool

Thanks :D I\'ve used the Golds so far on the model and they seem to be fine. You do have to shake them a fair bit and everything, but they mix just fine even when the sides of the bottle make it look separated.

I will potentially finish the model (maybe not the mural on the shoulder pad I guess) before the next update. Let\'s hope so :D

Black\'s now done on the upper body, so that leaves a lot of metallics, the cape, face and the bit of robes showing for the hood and tabard. Shouldn\'t actually be too hard to finish tonight I don\'t think. This model\'s shaping up for maybe 9 hours total paint time... it\'ll take more if I get to do the mural though :D

Long story short, didn\'t get it all done tonight I\'m afraid. Too much time spend eating and sleeping and whatnot lol

I also kinda messed up the gold on the upper body, did the steps out of order so had to mess around a lot more to make it match the legs. Oops.

Probably some of the best painting I\'ve done in such a short time, that\'s all one afternoon/evening :D

Yeah I didn\'t get around to finishing him yet, I could\'ve had it done on time if I didn\'t sleep a wink or eat a bite last night, but having to work 11 hours today without rest would\'ve sucked hard.

Not worth rushing a project I\'m enjoying so much.

Anyway for the gold I used:

P3 Blighted Gold
50/50 Blighted Gold and Brass Balls
Citadel Dark Angels Green wash
Brass Balls
DA Green wash -extra thin- to touch up areas

If you want pure Citadel equivalents, then this will be close enough:

Tin Bitz
Brazen Brass
DA Green Wash
Brazen Brass / Burnished Gold
DA Green Wash -extra thin

I do recommend playing around with P3 paints though, they have some beautiful colors in the range and they do behave kinda halfway between regular Citadel and Foundation paints. They cover extremely well and aren\'t as \"sticky\" as the Foundation paints feel. A very nice happy medium I find, they also thin down way better than Foundation paints.

So what\'s the story with this \"Fallen\" fella anyway - is he chaos? is he loyal? Is he like Cypher and no-one\'s quite sure?

Besides being phenomenal, my only though on this is about the feathers:
If the lava is shining up there would be some translucence through the one over said lava. Not much but just a bit. Otherwise keep it up.

And I was right about those p3 Golds:)

You got more done than I did. Mine\'s not even assembled... Looks great so far. Metallics and the sword look great. Can\'t wait to see more.

I was thinking about the transluscent feathers, maybe a tiny bit of a wash towards the \"stem\" in the middle or something. Might have to practise on a spare one or something, they only take a minute to sculpt. Honestly probably takes more time to knead the greenstuff now that I\'ve done 3, with two of them being double-sided :D

Anyway didn\'t get any more work done with today being Sunday, between church and hanging out/getting my birthday dinner with friends. Hooray :D

... Anyway ... the guy is your typical Dark Angel, you don\'t really know what side he\'s on. Definitely one of Luther\'s bunch. Being styled after Et Nox Fausta Est I had to make it look like there might be some redemption possible. That\'s why he hangs on to so much of the iconography and isn\'t full blown Chaos. The Eye of Horus instead of a Chaos Star, the heavenfall blade with a mere hint of red in it, the one feather not falling into the lava (actually that last one\'s taken directly from Hugo\'s poem).

I had to take a lot of Chaos style out of the Chaos bits, and add a little to the converted Imperial bits and try to find a middle ground. Lots of the pre-heresy stuff was pretty damn gothic anyway, so it\'s still kinda questionable whether he\'s gonna be Chaos oriented or repentant like Cypher may possibly be.

The somber face worked out well too, not some big sneering grin like the Chaos Lord normally has.

Sorry about the double post :D But I thought about it more and I think I figured out how to describe what I was going for.

His pose really echoes his state of mind: He\'s standing on the brink of true corruption. He\'s gone one way, realised his betrayal and has no idea where to go from here. Do all the feathers fall, is he completely damned? Only the Emperor could answer that one I think.

I also think it\'s ironic that the poem was never completed, and this character\'s story has an uncertain future as well :D

I think I\'m hopelessly hooked on P3 paints. They are just so amazing to work with.

Blending cloaks and whatnot has never been easier before. You can basecoat your midtone, then mix up a shade and paint it in successive layers of washes. The paint thins down beautifully and can be dark enough to be noticeably shaded really quickly, but with just water added the paint is still malleable enough that you can fine tune the shading long before the paint dries. And then you can do the same when you reapply the basecoat. Holy smokes was that a JOY to do.

It\'s not a technique you can\'t do with other paints, it just worked out so much easier with P3s. This is gonna make my life a lot easier I think.

Technical info: the cloak was just a basecoat of Gnarls Green shaded by mixing in a little paint from my lovely 2:1 Scorched Brown/Black mixing pot. Couple of those thinned layers of shading, retouch the basecoat, there you go. Hilights still to come where appropriate but you have what\'s realistically a perfectly smooth cloak in about 10 minutes of work.

Just noticed I got a bit of the paint on the tooth/claw/whatever hanging from his sword. Drat :p

try either glazing some red in around your shades, or if all the green is gone from there, mix green and red, you could glaze between your darkest shade and the green if you wish, and get more transition

then add a bit of yellow to your highlights, again between your main colour and your brightet highlight, it will bring that cloak to life ;)

nice colour scheme, looking good!
