I was just scanning the Sci/Fi shelves at our local Waterstones and I was suddenly taken up in literary rapture,I couldnt believe me eyes:eek:.Sitting there on the shelf was a new release or should I say a re-release:wow:
Joe Haldemans, Peace and War omnibus by Orion books. The first novel it contains is the Forever Wars, the last two I presume continue the saga.
Forever Wars is the book that over 30 years ago started my interst in Space Marines,I lost my copy and spent years searching second hand book shops for another ,All I can say is if your looing for a cracking Sci/Fi read go and get a copy .Haldeman served in Vietnam and his first hand experience of military life comes thru in his work,,,AWESOME STUFF !
GOD bless .................VINCENTI

Vikey; You are joking, right?
It\'s a classic SCi-Fi book one of the top 100 you must read before you die.

An aknowledged homage to Heinliens Starship troopers. Been mentioned on the forums quite a few times.

Basically its about a group of soldiers in the future. They get sent off to fight some aliens but because the technology in spacecraft is wierd, by the time they get to the warzone the fighting has already been over for 50 years. Likewise by the time they get back to Earth its been 300 years since they left. It focuses on how the returning soldiers try to adapt to a society that has forgotten they were even born and is based on the writers own experiences in Vietnam. Its a masterpiece of Science Fiction.

Forever war is one of the best sci-Fi books I know, very realistic despite its age, Haldeman, a physicist and war veteran spent quite some time do devise a realistic picture of a future war, it considering the knowledge of his time.
It is also well-taght and the main characters Mandela and Potter are very sympathetic.

Yes, excellent books. I really liked the eternal war. The other two were ok but not as strong.
My first encounter with the books was actually not though the actual comic but through the Dargaud graphic novels by Marvano and Haldeman. Forever war was used for the first three while Forever free and Forever peace were in the second three. While the story is of course less detailed and changed in some places the graphic novels still maintain the atmosphere. For those interested, they are also availabe in English by Nbm Pub Co.
They also worked together on another range of graphic comics called Dallas Barr. This is more a SF action range. The background story is interesting though. It\'s set in the future where one company has devised a technique which can reverse aging and rejuvinate people. It\'s a very expensive procedure and having a monopoly they demand that people who use will donate all their money to the company. Dallas Barr is one such patient and he is using his age long experience to do missions and get money together for the next treatment. Doesn\'t sound like much the way I describe it bit it\'s quite a fun series.

Bye, Ming-Hua

P.s. These book would do good as a movie too by the way. Unless it\'s adapted to a Hollywood \"all pure heroes, no criticism\" version that is.

P.p.s. Just found his bio: http://home.earthlink.net/~haldeman/bio.html
